    Functional Testing of Processor Cores in FPGA-Based Applications

    Embedded processor cores, which are widely used in SRAM-based FPGA applications, are candidates for SEU (Single Event Upset)-induced faults and need to be tested occasionally during system exploitation. Verifying a processor core is a difficult task, due to its complexity and the lack of user knowledge about the core-implementation details. In user applications, processor cores are normally tested by executing some kind of functional test in which the individual processor's instructions are tested with a set of deterministic test patterns, and the results are then compared with the stored reference values. For practical reasons the number of test patterns and corresponding results is usually small, which inherently leads to low fault coverage. In this paper we develop a concept that combines the whole instruction-set test into a compact test sequence, which can then be repeated with different input test patterns. This improves the fault coverage considerably with no additional memory requirements

    SRAM-based FPGAs are in-field reconfigurable an unlimited number of times. This characteristic, together with their high performance and high logic density, proves to be very convenient for a number of ground and space level applications. One drawback of this technology is that it is susceptible to ionizing radiation, and this sensitivity increases with technology scaling. This is a first order concern for applications in harsh radiation environments, and starts to be a concern for high reliability ground applications. Several techniques exist for coping with radiation effects at user application. In order to be effective they need to be complemented with configuration memory scrubbing, which allows error mitigation and prevents failures due to error accumulation. Depending on the radiation environment and on the system dependability requirements, the configuration scrubber design can become more or less complex. This paper classifies and presents current and novel design methodologies and architectures for SRAM-based FPGAs, and in particular for Xilinx Virtex-4QV/5QV, configuration memory scrubbers

    Programmable logic devices: a test approach for the Input / Output blocks and Pad-to-Pin interconnections

    Dynamically reconfigurable systems based on partial and dynamically reconfigurable FPGAs may have their functionality partially modified at run-time without stopping the operation of the whole system. The efficient management of the logic space available is one of the biggest problems faced by these systems. When the sequence of reconfigurations to be performed is not predictable, resource allocation decisions have to be made on-line. A rearrangement may be necessary to get enough contiguous space to implement incoming functions, avoiding the spreading of their components and the resulting degradation of system performance.A new software tool that helps to handle the problems posed by the consecutive reconfiguration of the same logic space is presented in this paper. This tool uses a novel on-line rearrangement procedure to solve fragmentation problems and to rearrange the logic space in a way completely transparent to the applications currently running

    As the ASIC design cost becomes affordable only for very large-scale productions, the FPGA technology is currently becoming the leading technology for those applications that require a small-scale production. FPGAs can be considered as a technology crossing between hardware and software. Only a small-number of standards for the design of safety-critical systems give guidelines and recommendations that take the peculiarities of the FPGA technology into consideration. The main contribution of this paper is an overview of the existing design standards that regulate the design and verification of FPGA-based systems in safety-critical application fields. Moreover, the paper proposes a survey of significant published research proposals and existing industrial guidelines about the topic, and collects and reports about some lessons learned from industrial and research projects involving the use of FPGA devices

    An Automated Continuous Integration Multitest Platform for Automotive Systems

    Testing has always been a crucial part of application development. It involves different techniques for verifying and validating the features of the target systems. For a complicated and/or complex system, tests are preferred to be carried out in different stages of the development process and as early as possible to avoid extra costs due to the errors caught at later stages. With the increasing system complexity, the cost of testing is also increasing in terms of resources and time, which introduce further impact against development constraints such as time-to-market. On the other hand, more and more associated electronic components lead to an ever-increasing system complexity in high reliable applications such as automotive ones different from heterogeneous systems such as advanced driver assistance systems, sensor fusion systems, etc. In this article, we present a testing framework utilizing the continuous integration (CI) solution from software engineering, a commercial virtual platform, and a hardware field programmable gate array based verification platform focusing on the engine control unit to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method.
