A PTAS for Bounded-Capacity Vehicle Routing in Planar Graphs
The Capacitated Vehicle Routing problem is to find a minimum-cost set of
tours that collectively cover clients in a graph, such that each tour starts
and ends at a specified depot and is subject to a capacity bound on the number
of clients it can serve. In this paper, we present a polynomial-time
approximation scheme (PTAS) for instances in which the input graph is planar
and the capacity is bounded. Previously, only a quasipolynomial-time
approximation scheme was known for these instances. To obtain this result, we
show how to embed planar graphs into bounded-treewidth graphs while preserving,
in expectation, the client-to-client distances up to a small additive error
proportional to client distances to the depot
Locating Depots for Capacitated Vehicle Routing
We study a location-routing problem in the context of capacitated vehicle
routing. The input is a set of demand locations in a metric space and a fleet
of k vehicles each of capacity Q. The objective is to locate k depots, one for
each vehicle, and compute routes for the vehicles so that all demands are
satisfied and the total cost is minimized. Our main result is a constant-factor
approximation algorithm for this problem. To achieve this result, we reduce to
the k-median-forest problem, which generalizes both k-median and minimum
spanning tree, and which might be of independent interest. We give a
(3+c)-approximation algorithm for k-median-forest, which leads to a
(12+c)-approximation algorithm for the above location-routing problem, for any
constant c>0. The algorithm for k-median-forest is just t-swap local search,
and we prove that it has locality gap 3+2/t; this generalizes the corresponding
result known for k-median. Finally we consider the "non-uniform"
k-median-forest problem which has different cost functions for the MST and
k-median parts. We show that the locality gap for this problem is unbounded
even under multi-swaps, which contrasts with the uniform case. Nevertheless, we
obtain a constant-factor approximation algorithm, using an LP based approach.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur
Minimum Makespan Multi-vehicle Dial-a-Ride
Dial a ride problems consist of a metric space (denoting travel time between
vertices) and a set of m objects represented as source-destination pairs, where
each object requires to be moved from its source to destination vertex. We
consider the multi-vehicle Dial a ride problem, with each vehicle having
capacity k and its own depot-vertex, where the objective is to minimize the
maximum completion time (makespan) of the vehicles. We study the "preemptive"
version of the problem, where an object may be left at intermediate vertices
and transported by more than one vehicle, while being moved from source to
destination. Our main results are an O(log^3 n)-approximation algorithm for
preemptive multi-vehicle Dial a ride, and an improved O(log t)-approximation
for its special case when there is no capacity constraint. We also show that
the approximation ratios improve by a log-factor when the underlying metric is

Capacitated Vehicle Routing with Non-Uniform Speeds
The capacitated vehicle routing problem (CVRP) involves distributing
(identical) items from a depot to a set of demand locations, using a single
capacitated vehicle. We study a generalization of this problem to the setting
of multiple vehicles having non-uniform speeds (that we call Heterogenous
CVRP), and present a constant-factor approximation algorithm.
The technical heart of our result lies in achieving a constant approximation
to the following TSP variant (called Heterogenous TSP). Given a metric denoting
distances between vertices, a depot r containing k vehicles with possibly
different speeds, the goal is to find a tour for each vehicle (starting and
ending at r), so that every vertex is covered in some tour and the maximum
completion time is minimized. This problem is precisely Heterogenous CVRP when
vehicles are uncapacitated.
The presence of non-uniform speeds introduces difficulties for employing
standard tour-splitting techniques. In order to get a better understanding of
this technique in our context, we appeal to ideas from the 2-approximation for
scheduling in parallel machine of Lenstra et al.. This motivates the
introduction of a new approximate MST construction called Level-Prim, which is
related to Light Approximate Shortest-path Trees. The last component of our
algorithm involves partitioning the Level-Prim tree and matching the resulting
parts to vehicles. This decomposition is more subtle than usual since now we
need to enforce correlation between the size of the parts and their distances
to the depot
A survey of approximation algorithms for capacitated vehicle routing problems
Finding the shortest travelling tour of vehicles with capacity k from the
depot to the customers is called the Capacity vehicle routing problem (CVRP).
CVRP plays an essential position in logistics systems, and it is the most
intensively studied problem in combinatorial optimization. In complexity, CVRP
with k 3 is an NP-hard problem, and it is APX-hard as well. We already
knew that it could not be approximated in metric space. Moreover, it is the
first problem resisting Arora's famous approximation framework. So, whether
there is, a polynomial-time (1+)-approximation for the Euclidean CVRP
for any is still an open problem. This paper will summarize the
research progress from history to up-to-date developments. The survey will be

A Quasi-Polynomial-Time Approximation Scheme for Vehicle Routing on Planar and Bounded-Genus Graphs
The Capacitated Vehicle Routing problem is a generalization of the Traveling Salesman problem in which a set of clients must be visited by a collection of capacitated tours. Each tour can visit at most Q clients and must start and end at a specified depot. We present the first approximation scheme for Capacitated Vehicle Routing for non-Euclidean metrics. Specifically we give a quasi-polynomial-time approximation scheme for Capacitated Vehicle Routing with fixed capacities on planar graphs. We also show how this result can be extended to bounded-genus graphs and polylogarithmic capacities, as well as to variations of the problem that include multiple depots and charging penalties for unvisited clients
Deliver or hold: Approximation Algorithms for the Periodic Inventory Routing Problem
The inventory routing problem involves trading off inventory holding
costs at client locations with vehicle routing costs to deliver
frequently from a single central depot to meet deterministic client demands over a finite planing horizon. In this paper, we consider periodic solutions that visit clients in one of several specified frequencies, and focus on the case when the frequencies of visiting nodes are nested. We give the first constant-factor approximation algorithms for designing optimum nested periodic schedules for the problem with no limit on vehicle capacities by simple reductions to prize-collecting network design problems. For instance, we present a 2.55-approximation algorithm for the minimum-cost nested periodic
schedule where the vehicle routes are modeled as minimum Steiner trees. We also show a general reduction from the capacitated
problem where all vehicles have the same capacity to the uncapacitated
version with a slight loss in performance. This reduction gives a
4.55-approximation for the capacitated problem. In addition, we prove several structural results relating the values of optimal policies of various types
Approximation Algorithms for Capacitated k-Travelling Repairmen Problems
We study variants of the capacitated vehicle routing problem. In the multiple depot capacitated k-travelling repairmen problem (MD-CkTRP), we have a collection of clients to be served by one vehicle in a fleet of k identical vehicles based at given depots. Each client has a given demand that must be satisfied, and each vehicle can carry a total of at most Q demand before it must resupply at its original depot. We wish to route the vehicles in a way that obeys the constraints while minimizing the average time (latency) required to serve a client. This generalizes the Multi-depot k-Travelling Repairman Problem (MD-kTRP) [Chekuri and Kumar, IEEE-FOCS, 2003; Post and Swamy, ACM-SIAM SODA, 2015] to the capacitated vehicle setting, and while it has been previously studied [Lysgaard and Wohlk, EJOR, 2014; Rivera et al, Comput Optim Appl, 2015], no approximation algorithm with a proven ratio is known.
We give a 42.49-approximation to this general problem, and refine this constant to 25.49 when clients have unit demands. As far as we are aware, these are the first constant-factor approximations for capacitated vehicle routing problems with a latency objective. We achieve these results by developing a framework allowing us to solve a wider range of latency problems, and crafting various orienteering-style oracles for use in this framework. We also show a simple LP rounding algorithm has a better approximation ratio for the maximum coverage problem with groups (MCG), first studied by Chekuri and Kumar [APPROX, 2004], and use it as a subroutine in our framework. Our approximation ratio for MD-CkTRP when restricted to uncapacitated setting matches the best known bound for it [Post and Swamy, ACM-SIAM SODA, 2015]. With our framework, any improvements to our oracles or our MCG approximation will result in improved approximations to the corresponding k-TRP problem
