    MScMS-II: an innovative IR-based indoor coordinate measuring system for large-scale metrology applications

    According to the current great interest concerning large-scale metrology applications in many different fields of manufacturing industry, technologies and techniques for dimensional measurement have recently shown a substantial improvement. Ease-of-use, logistic and economic issues, as well as metrological performance are assuming a more and more important role among system requirements. This paper describes the architecture and the working principles of a novel infrared (IR) optical-based system, designed to perform low-cost and easy indoor coordinate measurements of large-size objects. The system consists of a distributed network-based layout, whose modularity allows fitting differently sized and shaped working volumes by adequately increasing the number of sensing units. Differently from existing spatially distributed metrological instruments, the remote sensor devices are intended to provide embedded data elaboration capabilities, in order to share the overall computational load. The overall system functionalities, including distributed layout configuration, network self-calibration, 3D point localization, and measurement data elaboration, are discussed.     An Innovative Photogrammetric System for 3D Digitization of Dental Models

    This paper presents an innovative system for 3D reconstruction of a physical dental model. The innovative system is based on close-range photogrammetry and enables the projection of digital light texture on the objects surface. It is based on the application of mirrors that direct the digital light texture to the vertical surfaces of the physical model. In this way, high coverage of the object is achieved, and 3D reconstruction from one set of photographs is possible. 3D digitization, verification and comparison of the proposed methodology was performed on dental models that are characterized by extremely complex surfaces. It was performed by comparing the proposed approach with active stereovision, and the efficiency was evaluated in relation to the reference 3D model obtained by the structured light 3D scanner. The comparison of the results was performed on the basis of the mean deviation and standard deviation for the 3D model with combined teeth and for the 3D model with metal caps. The absolute mean deviations for the 3D model with combined teeth are 0.004-0.021 mm, with a standard deviation of 0.055-0.058 mm, and for the 3D model with metal caps absolute mean deviations are 0.015-0.033 mm, with a standard deviation of 0.095-0.113 mm, respectively. Absolute minimum values of mean deviation of 0.004 mm and standard deviations of 0.055 mm were obtained by 3D model with combined teeth,which was reconstructed by the proposed innovative approach. The obtained results indicate a higher accuracy of the innovative approach in relation to the use of a commercial 3D scanner that uses active stereovision principle

    3D scanning of cultural heritage with consumer depth cameras

    Three dimensional reconstruction of cultural heritage objects is an expensive and time-consuming process. Recent consumer real-time depth acquisition devices, like Microsoft Kinect, allow very fast and simple acquisition of 3D views. However 3D scanning with such devices is a challenging task due to the limited accuracy and reliability of the acquired data. This paper introduces a 3D reconstruction pipeline suited to use consumer depth cameras as hand-held scanners for cultural heritage objects. Several new contributions have been made to achieve this result. They include an ad-hoc filtering scheme that exploits the model of the error on the acquired data and a novel algorithm for the extraction of salient points exploiting both depth and color data. Then the salient points are used within a modified version of the ICP algorithm that exploits both geometry and color distances to precisely align the views even when geometry information is not sufficient to constrain the registration. The proposed method, although applicable to generic scenes, has been tuned to the acquisition of sculptures and in this connection its performance is rather interesting as the experimental results indicate

    Three-dimensional scanning of specular and diffuse metallic surfaces using an infrared technique

    For the past two decades, the need for three-dimensional (3-D) scanning of industrial objects has increased significantly and many experimental techniques and commercial solutions have been proposed. However, difficulties remain for the acquisition of optically non-cooperative surfaces, such as transparent or specular surfaces. To address highly reflective metallic surfaces, we propose the extension of a technique that was originally dedicated to glass objects. In contrast to conventional active triangulation techniques that measure the reflection of visible radiation, we measure the thermal emission of a surface, which is locally heated by a laser source. Considering the thermophysical properties of metals, we present a simulation model of heat exchanges that are induced by the process, helping to demonstrate its feasibility on specular metallic surfaces and predicting the settings of the system. With our experimental device, we have validated the theoretical modeling and computed some 3-D point clouds from specular surfaces of various geometries. Furthermore, a comparison of our results with those of a conventional system on specular and diffuse parts will highlight that the accuracy of the measurement no longer depends on the roughness of the surface

    Raman systems based on handheld fiber-optic probes offer advantages in terms of smaller sizes and easier access to the measurement sites, which are favorable for biomedical and clinical applications in the complex environment. However, there are several common drawbacks of applying probes for many applications: (1) The fixed working distance requires the user to maintain a certain working distance to acquire higher Raman signals; (2) The single-point-measurement ability restricts realizing a mapping or scanning procedure; (3) Lack of real-time data processing and a straightforward co-registering method to link the Raman information with the respective measurement position. The thesis proposed and experimentally demonstrated various approaches to overcome these drawbacks. A handheld fiber-optic Raman probe with an autofocus unit was presented to overcome the problem arising from using fixed-focus lenses, by using a liquid lens as the objective lens, which allows dynamical adjustment of the focal length of the probe. An implementation of a computer vision-based positional tracking to co-register the regular Raman spectroscopic measurements with the spatial location enables fast recording of a Raman image from a large tissue sample by combining positional tracking of the laser spot through brightfield images. The visualization of the Raman image has been extended to augmented and mixed reality and combined with a 3D reconstruction method and projector-based visualization to offer an intuitive and easily understandable way of presenting the Raman image. All these advances are substantial and highly beneficial to further drive the clinical translation of Raman spectroscopy as potential image-guided instrumentation

La fotogrametría es una técnica de medición óptica 3D que engloba múltiples configuraciones y aproximaciones. En este estudio se han desarrollado procedimientos de medición, modelos y estrategias de procesamiento de imagen que van más allá que la fotogrametría convencional y buscan el emplear soluciones de otros campos de la visión artificial en aplicaciones industriales. Mientras que la fotogrametría industrial requiere emplear dianas artificiales para definir los puntos o elementos de interés, esta tesis contempla la reducción e incluso la eliminación de las dianas tanto pasivas como activas como alternativas prácticas. La mayoría de los sistemas de medida utilizan las dianas tanto para definir los puntos de control, relacionar las distintas perspectivas, obtener precisión, así como para automatizar las medidas. Aunque en muchas situaciones el empleo de dianas no sea restrictivo existen aplicaciones industriales donde su empleo condiciona y restringe considerablemente los procedimientos de medida empleados en la inspección. Un claro ejemplo es la verificación y control de calidad de piezas seriadas, o la medición y seguimiento de elementos prismáticos relacionados con un sistema de referencia determinado. Es en este punto donde la fotogrametría sin dianas puede combinarse o complementarse con soluciones tradicionales para tratar de mejorar las prestaciones actuales

    Spatially Aware Computing for Natural Interaction

    Spatial information refers to the location of an object in a physical or digital world. Besides, it also includes the relative position of an object related to other objects around it. In this dissertation, three systems are designed and developed. All of them apply spatial information in different fields. The ultimate goal is to increase the user friendliness and efficiency in those applications by utilizing spatial information. The first system is a novel Web page data extraction application, which takes advantage of 2D spatial information to discover structured records from a Web page. The extracted information is useful to re-organize the layout of a Web page to fit mobile browsing. The second application utilizes the 3D spatial information of a mobile device within a large paper-based workspace to implement interactive paper that combines the merits of paper documents and mobile devices. This application can overlay digital information on top of a paper document based on the location of a mobile device within a workspace. The third application further integrates 3D space information with sound detection to realize an automatic camera management system. This application automatically controls multiple cameras in a conference room, and creates an engaging video by intelligently switching camera shots among meeting participants based on their activities. Evaluations have been made on all three applications, and the results are promising.
