Hexagonal wavelet processing of digital mammography
This paper introduces a novel approach for accomplishing mammographic feature analysis through overcomplete multiresolution representations. We show that efficient representations may be identified from digital mammograms and used to enhance features of importance to mammography within a continuum of scale-space. We present a method of contrast enhancement based on an overcomplete, non-separable multiscale representation: the hexagonal wavelet transform. Mammograms are reconstructed from transform coefficients modified at one or more levels by local and global non-linear operators. Multiscale edges identified within distinct levels of transform space provide local support for enhancement. We demonstrate that features extracted from multiresolution representations can provide an adaptive mechanism for accomplishing local contrast enhancement. We suggest that multiscale detection and local enhancement of singularities may be effectively employed for the visualization of breast pathology without excessive noise amplification
An Improved Approach for Contrast Enhancement of Spinal Cord Images based on Multiscale Retinex Algorithm
This paper presents a new approach for contrast enhancement of spinal cord
medical images based on multirate scheme incorporated into multiscale retinex
algorithm. The proposed work here uses HSV color space, since HSV color space
separates color details from intensity. The enhancement of medical image is
achieved by down sampling the original image into five versions, namely, tiny,
small, medium, fine, and normal scale. This is due to the fact that the each
versions of the image when independently enhanced and reconstructed results in
enormous improvement in the visual quality. Further, the contrast stretching
and MultiScale Retinex (MSR) techniques are exploited in order to enhance each
of the scaled version of the image. Finally, the enhanced image is obtained by
combining each of these scales in an efficient way to obtain the composite
enhanced image. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is validated by using
a wavelet energy metric in the wavelet domain. Reconstructed image using
proposed method highlights the details (edges and tissues), reduces image noise
(Gaussian and Speckle) and improves the overall contrast. The proposed
algorithm also enhances sharp edges of the tissue surrounding the spinal cord
regions which is useful for diagnosis of spinal cord lesions. Elaborated
experiments are conducted on several medical images and results presented show
that the enhanced medical pictures are of good quality and is found to be
better compared with other researcher methods.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, International Journal of Imaging and Robotics.

Design of Novel Algorithm and Architecture for Gaussian Based Color Image Enhancement System for Real Time Applications
This paper presents the development of a new algorithm for Gaussian based
color image enhancement system. The algorithm has been designed into
architecture suitable for FPGA/ASIC implementation. The color image enhancement
is achieved by first convolving an original image with a Gaussian kernel since
Gaussian distribution is a point spread function which smoothen the image.
Further, logarithm-domain processing and gain/offset corrections are employed
in order to enhance and translate pixels into the display range of 0 to 255.
The proposed algorithm not only provides better dynamic range compression and
color rendition effect but also achieves color constancy in an image. The
design exploits high degrees of pipelining and parallel processing to achieve
real time performance. The design has been realized by RTL compliant Verilog
coding and fits into a single FPGA with a gate count utilization of 321,804.
The proposed method is implemented using Xilinx Virtex-II Pro XC2VP40-7FF1148
FPGA device and is capable of processing high resolution color motion pictures
of sizes of up to 1600x1200 pixels at the real time video rate of 116 frames
per second. This shows that the proposed design would work for not only still
images but also for high resolution video sequences.Comment: 15 pages, 15 figure
Delaunay triangulation based image enhancement for echocardiography images
A novel image enhancement approach for automatic echocardiography image processing is proposed. The main steps include undecimated wavelet based speckle noise reduction, edge detection, followed by a regional enhancement process that employs Delaunay triangulation based thresholding. The edge detection is performed using a fuzzy logic based center point detection and a subsequent radial search based fuzzy multiscale edge detection. The edges obtained are used as the vertices for Delaunay triangulation for enhancement purposes. This method enhances the heart wall region in the echo image. This technique is applied to both synthetic and real image sets that were obtained from a local hospital
Coronal Mass Ejection Detection using Wavelets, Curvelets and Ridgelets: Applications for Space Weather Monitoring
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are large-scale eruptions of plasma and
magnetic feld that can produce adverse space weather at Earth and other
locations in the Heliosphere. Due to the intrinsic multiscale nature of
features in coronagraph images, wavelet and multiscale image processing
techniques are well suited to enhancing the visibility of CMEs and supressing
noise. However, wavelets are better suited to identifying point-like features,
such as noise or background stars, than to enhancing the visibility of the
curved form of a typical CME front. Higher order multiscale techniques, such as
ridgelets and curvelets, were therefore explored to characterise the morphology
(width, curvature) and kinematics (position, velocity, acceleration) of CMEs.
Curvelets in particular were found to be well suited to characterising CME
properties in a self-consistent manner. Curvelets are thus likely to be of
benefit to autonomous monitoring of CME properties for space weather
applications.Comment: Accepted for publication in Advances in Space Research (3 April 2010
CT diagnosis of early stroke : the initial approach to the new CAD tool based on multiscale estimation of ischemia
Background: Computer aided diagnosis (CAD) becomes one of the most important diagnostic tools for urgent states in cerebral stroke and other life-threatening conditions where time plays a crucial role. Routine CT is still diagnostically insufficient in hyperacute stage of stroke that is in the therapeutic window for thrombolytic therapy. Authors present computer assistant of early ischemic stroke diagnosis that supports the radiologic interpretations. A new semantic-visualization system of ischemic symptoms applied to noncontrast, routine CT examination was based on multiscale image processing and diagnostic content estimation. Material/Methods: Evaluation of 95 sets of examinations in patients admitted to a hospital with symptoms suggesting stroke was undertaken by four radiologists from two medical centers unaware of the final clinical findings. All of the consecutive cases were considered as having no CT direct signs of hyperacute ischemia. At the first test stage only the CTs performed at the admission were evaluated independently by radiologists. Next, the same early scans were evaluated again with additional use of multiscale computer-assistant of stroke (MulCAS). Computerized suggestion with increased sensitivity to the subtle image manifestations of cerebral ischemia was constructed as additional view representing estimated diagnostic content with enhanced stroke symptoms synchronized to routine CT data preview. Follow-up CT examinations and clinical features confirmed or excluded the diagnosis of stroke constituting 'gold standard' to verify stroke detection performance. Results: Higher AUC (area under curve) values were found for MulCAS -aided radiological diagnosis for all readers and the differences were statistically significant for random readers-random cases parametric and non-parametric DBM MRMC analysis. Sensitivity and specificity of acute stroke detection for the readers was increased by 30% and 4%, respectively. Conclusions: Routine CT completed with proposed method of computer assisted diagnosis provided noticeable better diagnosis efficiency of acute stroke according to the rates and opinions of all test readers. Further research includes fully automatic detection of hypodense regions to complete assisted indications and formulate the suggestions of stroke cases more objectively. Planned prospective studies will let evaluate more accurately the impact of this CAD tool on diagnosis and further treatment in patients suffered from stroke. It is necessary to determine whether this method is possible to be applied widely
3D Frangi-based lung vessel enhancement filter penalizing airways
This paper describes a fully automatic simultaneous lung vessel and airway enhancement filter. The approach consists of a Frangi-based multiscale vessel enhancement filtering specifically designed for lung vessel and airway detection, where arteries and veins have high contrast with respect to the lung parenchyma, and airway walls are hollow tubular structures with a non negative response using the classical Frangi's filter. The features extracted from the Hessian matrix are used to detect centerlines and approximate walls of airways, decreasing the filter response in those areas by applying a penalty function to the vesselness measure. We validate the segmentation method in 20 CT scans with different pathological states within the VESSEL12 challenge framework. Results indicate that our approach obtains good results, decreasing the number of false positives in airway walls
