    A Model-Driven Approach for Business Process Management

    The Business Process Management is a common mechanism recommended by a high number of standards for the management of companies and organizations. In software companies this practice is every day more accepted and companies have to assume it, if they want to be competitive. However, the effective definition of these processes and mainly their maintenance and execution are not always easy tasks. This paper presents an approach based on the Model-Driven paradigm for Business Process Management in software companies.     Reliability Analysis of Complex NASA Systems with Model-Based Engineering

    The emergence of model-based engineering, with Model- Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) leading the way, is transforming design and analysis methodologies. The recognized benefits to systems development include moving from document-centric information systems and document-centric project communication to a model-centric environment in which control of design changes in the life cycles is facilitated. In addition, a single source of truth about the system, that is up-to-date in all respects of the design, becomes the authoritative source of data and information about the system. This promotes consistency and efficiency in regard to integration of the system elements as the design emerges and thereby may further optimize the design. Therefore Reliability Engineers (REs) supporting NASA missions must be integrated into model-based engineering to ensure the outputs of their analyses are relevant and value-needed to the design, development, and operational processes for failure risks assessment and communication

    Issues in digital preservation: towards a new research agenda

    Digital Preservation has evolved into a specialized, interdisciplinary research discipline of its own, seeing significant increases in terms of research capacity, results, but also challenges. However, with this specialization and subsequent formation of a dedicated subgroup of researchers active in this field, limitations of the challenges addressed can be observed. Digital preservation research may seem to react to problems arising, fixing problems that exist now, rather than proactively researching new solutions that may be applicable only after a few years of maturing. Recognising the benefits of bringing together researchers and practitioners with various professional backgrounds related to digital preservation, a seminar was organized in Schloss Dagstuhl, at the Leibniz Center for Informatics (18-23 July 2010), with the aim of addressing the current digital preservation challenges, with a specific focus on the automation aspects in this field. The main goal of the seminar was to outline some research challenges in digital preservation, providing a number of "research questions" that could be immediately tackled, e.g. in Doctoral Thesis. The seminar intended also to highlight the need for the digital preservation community to reach out to IT research and other research communities outside the immediate digital preservation domain, in order to jointly develop solutions

    NASA aerospace flight battery systems program

    The major objective of the NASA Aerospace Flight Battery Systems Program is to provide NASA with the policy and posture to increase and ensure the safety, performance and reliability of batteries for space power systems. The program plan has been modified in the past year to reflect changes in the agency's approach to battery related problems that are affecting flight programs. Primary attention in the Battery Program is being devoted to the development of an advanced nickel-cadmium cell design and the qualification of vendors to produce cells for flight programs. As part of a unified Battery Program, the development of a nickel-hydrogen standard and primary cell issues are also being pursued to provide high performance NASA Standards and space qualified state-of-the-art primary cells. The resolution of issues is being addressed with the full participation of the aerospace battery community

    An Evolutionary Approach for Learning Attack Specifications in Network Graphs

    This paper presents an evolutionary algorithm that learns attack scenarios, called attack specifications, from a network graph. This learning process aims to find attack specifications that minimise cost and maximise the value that an attacker gets from a successful attack. The attack specifications that the algorithm learns are represented using an approach based on Hoare's CSP (Communicating Sequential Processes). This new approach is able to represent several elements found in attacks, for example synchronisation. These attack specifications can be used by network administrators to find vulnerable scenarios, composed from the basic constructs Sequence, Parallel and Choice, that lead to valuable assets in the network

    Creep-fatigue life assessment of cruciform weldments using the linear matching method

    This paper presents a creep-fatigue life assessment of a cruciform weldment made of the steel AISI type 316N(L) and subjected to reversed bending and cyclic dwells at 550C using the Linear Matching Method (LMM) and considering different weld zones. The design limits are estimated by the shakedown analysis using the LMM and elastic-perfectly-plastic material model. The creep fatigue analysis is implemented using the following material models: 1) Ramberg-Osgood model for plastic strains under saturated cyclic conditions; 2) power-law model in “time hardening” form for creep strains during primary creep stage. The number of cycles to failure N? under creep-fatigue interaction is defined by: a) relation for cycles to fatigue failure N dependent on numerical total strain range "tot for the fatigue damage !f ; b) long-term strength relation for the time to creep rupture t dependent on numerical average stress ¯ during dwell t for the creep damage !cr; c) non-linear creep-fatigue interaction diagram for the total damage. Numerically estimated N? for different t and "tot shows good quantitative agreement with experiments. A parametric study of different dwell times t is used to formulate the functions for N? and residual life L? dependent on t and normalised bending moment ˜M , and the corresponding contour plot intended for design applications is created

    On creep-fatigue endurance of TIG-dressed weldments using the linear matching method

    This paper is devoted to parametric study on creep-fatigue endurance of the steel type 316N(L) weldments at 550◦C identified as type 3 according to R5 Vol. 2/3 procedure classification. The study is implemented using a direct method known as the Linear Matching Method (LMM) and based upon the creep-fatigue evaluation procedure considering time fraction rule for creep-damage assessment. Seven configurations of the weldment, characterised by particular values of a geometrical parameter ρ, are proposed. Parameter ρ, which represents different grades of TIG dressing, is a ratio between the radius of the fillet of the remelted metal on a weld toe and the thickness of welded plates. For each configuration, the total number of cycles to failure N⋆ in creep-fatigue conditions is assessed numerically for different loading cases defined by normalised bending moment ˜M and dwell period t. The obtained set of N⋆ is extrapolated by the analytic function dependent on ˜M, t and parameter ρ. Proposed function for N⋆ shows good agreement with numerical results obtained by the LMM. Therefore, it is used for the identification of Fatigue Strength Reduction Factors (FSRFs) effected by creep, which are intended for design purposes, and dependent on t and ρ
