    Fuzzy improvement of the SQL

    Structured Query Language (SQL) is used to obtain data from relational databases. Fuzzy improvement of SQL queries has advantages in cases when the user cannot unambiguously define selection criteria or when the user wants to examine data that almost meet the given criteria. In this paper we examine a realization of the fuzzy querying concept. For this purposes the fuzzy generalized logical condition for the WHERE part of the SQL is created. It allows users to create queries by linguistic terms. The proposed model is an extension of the SQL so that no modification inside databases has to be undertaken

    An Introduction to Ontology

    Analytical philosophy of the last one hundred years has been heavily influenced by a doctrine to the effect that one can arrive at a correct ontology by paying attention to certain superficial (syntactic) features of first-order predicate logic as conceived by Frege and Russell. More specifically, it is a doctrine to the effect that the key to the ontological structure of reality is captured syntactically in the ‘Fa’ (or, in more sophisticated versions, in the ‘Rab’) of first-order logic, where ‘F’ stands for what is general in reality and ‘a’ for what is individual. Hence “f(a)ntology”. Because predicate logic has exactly two syntactically different kinds of referring expressions—‘F’, ‘G’, ‘R’, etc., and ‘a’, ‘b’, ‘c’, etc.—so reality must consist of exactly two correspondingly different kinds of entity: the general (properties, concepts) and the particular (things, objects), the relation between these two kinds of entity being revealed in the predicate-argument structure of atomic formulas in first-order logic

    Evolving Takagi-Sugeno-Kang fuzzy systems using multi-population grammar guided genetic programming

    This work proposes a novel approach for the automatic generation and tuning of complete Takagi-Sugeno-Kang fuzzy rule based systems. The examined system aims to explore the effects of a reduced search space for a genetic programming framework by means of grammar guidance that describes candidate structures of fuzzy rule based systems. The presented approach applies context-free grammars to generate individuals and evolve solutions through the search process of the algorithm. A multi-population approach is adopted for the genetic programming system, in order to increase the depth of the search process. Two candidate grammars are examined in one regression problem and one system identification task. Preliminary results are included and discussion proposes further research directions

    Characterizing urban landscapes using fuzzy sets

    Characterizing urban landscapes is important given the present and future projections of global population that favor urban growth. The definition of “urban” on a thematic map has proven to be problematic since urban areas are heterogeneous in terms of land use and land cover. Further, certain urban classes are inherently imprecise due to the difficulty in integrating various social and environmental inputs into a precise definition. Social components often include demographic patterns, transportation, building type and density while ecological components include soils, elevation, hydrology, climate, vegetation and tree cover. In this paper, we adopt a coupled human and natural system (CHANS) integrated scientific framework for characterizing urban landscapes. We implement the framework by adopting a fuzzy sets concept of “urban characterization” since fuzzy sets relate to classes of object with imprecise boundaries in which membership is a matter of degree. For dynamic mapping applications, user-defined classification schemes involving rules combining different social and ecological inputs can lead to a degree of quantification in class labeling varying from “highly urban” to “least urban”. A socio-economic perspective of urban may include threshold values for population and road network density while a more ecological perspective of urban may utilize the ratio of natural versus built area and percent forest cover. Threshold values are defined to derive the fuzzy rules of membership, in each case, and various combinations of rules offer a greater flexibility to characterize the many facets of the urban landscape. We illustrate the flexibility and utility of this fuzzy inference approach called the Fuzzy Urban Index for the Boston Metro region with five inputs and eighteen rules. The resulting classification map shows levels of fuzzy membership ranging from highly urban to least urban or rural in the Boston study region. We validate our approach using two experts assessing accuracy of the resulting fuzzy urban map. We discuss how our approach can be applied in other urban contexts with newly emerging descriptors of urban sustainability, urban ecology and urban metabolism.This research was partially supported by "Boston University Initiative on Cities Early Stage Urban Research Awards 2015-16" (Gopal & Phillips) and the Frederick S.     User Preference Web Search -- Experiments with a System Connecting Web and User

    We present models, methods, implementations and experiments with a system enabling personalized web search for many users with different preferences. The system consists of a web information extraction part, a text search engine, a middleware supporting top-k answers and a user interface for querying and evaluation of search results. We integrate several tools (implementing our models and methods) into one framework connecting user with the web. The model represents user preferences with fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic, here understood as a scoring describing user satisfaction. This model can be acquired with explicit or implicit methods. Model-theoretic semantics is based on fuzzy description logic f-EL. User preference learning is based on our model of fuzzy inductive logic programming. Our system works both for English and Slovak resources. The primary application domain are job offers and job search, however we show extension to mutual investment funds search and a possibility of extension into other application domains. Our top-k search is optimized with own heuristics and repository with special indexes. Our model was experimentally implemented, the integration was tested and is web accessible. We focus on experiments with several users and measure their satisfaction according to correlation coefficients

    Intelligent modeling of e-Government initiatives in Greece

    Over the last two years Greece has employed agile ICT solutions to reduce the administrative burden in front-office G2B transactions. This research supplements historic analysis with fuzzy cognitive maps to offer a multi-dimensional coupling of eGovernment initiatives with digital maturity assessment capabilities and a strategy alignment evaluation framework. This “intelligent x-ray” confirms that front-office technology is important in reducing administrative burden. The digital bypass of bureaucracy seems to be an effective start for Greece. However, this strategy can only serve as a short-term tactical choice. The “intelligent x-ray” provides executive level quantification and traceable reasoning to show that excessive emphasis on front- office technology will soon fail to support a strong eGovernment maturity. Organizational efficiency, interoperability, regulatory simplifications, and change management must also act as important objectives. Only then will ICT deliver its full potential, and the eGovernment maturity will improve significantly even with moderate ICT investments
