    Optimization in Dynamical Systems: Theory and Application

    In this dissertation, we study optimization methods in interconnected systems and investigate their applications in robotics, energy harvesting, and mean-field linear quadratic multi-agent systems. We first focus on parallel robots. Parallel Robots have numerous applications in motion simulation systems and high-precision instruments. Specifically, we investigate the forward kinematics (FK) of parallel robots and formulate it as an error minimization problem. Following this formulation, we develop an optimization algorithm to solve FK and provide a theoretical analysis of the convergence of the proposed algorithm. Then, we investigate the energy optimization (maximization) in a specific class of micro-energy harvesters (MEH). These types of energy harvesters are known to extract the largest amount of power from the kinetic energy of the human body, making them an appropriate choice for wearable technology in healthcare applications. Employing machine learning tools and using the existing models for the MEH's kinematics, we propose three methods for energy maximization. Next, we study optimal control in a mean-field linear quadratic system. Mean-field systems have critical applications in approximating very large-scale systems' behavior. Specifically, we establish results on the convergence of policy gradient (PG) methods to the optimal solution in a mean-field linear quadratic game. We finally consider the risk-constrained control of agents in a mean-field linear quadratic setting. Simulations validate the theoretical findings and their effectiveness

    Energy harvesting from body motion using rotational micro-generation

    Autonomous system applications are typically limited by the power supply operational lifetime when battery replacement is difficult or costly. A trade-off between battery size and battery life is usually calculated to determine the device capability and lifespan. As a result, energy harvesting research has gained importance as society searches for alternative energy sources for power generation. For instance, energy harvesting has been a proven alternative for powering solar-based calculators and self-winding wristwatches. Thus, the use of energy harvesting technology can make it possible to assist or replace batteries for portable, wearable, or surgically-implantable autonomous systems. Applications such as cardiac pacemakers or electrical stimulation applications can benefit from this approach since the number of surgeries for battery replacement can be reduced or eliminated. Research on energy scavenging from body motion has been investigated to evaluate the feasibility of powering wearable or implantable systems. Energy from walking has been previously extracted using generators placed on shoes, backpacks, and knee braces while producing power levels ranging from milliwatts to watts. The research presented in this paper examines the available power from walking and running at several body locations. The ankle, knee, hip, chest, wrist, elbow, upper arm, side of the head, and back of the head were the chosen target localizations. Joints were preferred since they experience the most drastic acceleration changes. For this, a motor-driven treadmill test was performed on 11 healthy individuals at several walking (1-4 mph) and running (2-5 mph) speeds. The treadmill test provided the acceleration magnitudes from the listed body locations. Power can be estimated from the treadmill evaluation since it is proportional to the acceleration and frequency of occurrence. Available power output from walking was determined to be greater than 1mW/cm³ for most body locations while being over 10mW/cm³ at the foot and ankle locations. Available power from running was found to be almost 10 times higher than that from walking. Most energy harvester topologies use linear generator approaches that are well suited to fixed-frequency vibrations with sub-millimeter amplitude oscillations. In contrast, body motion is characterized with a wide frequency spectrum and larger amplitudes. A generator prototype based on self-winding wristwatches is deemed to be appropriate for harvesting body motion since it is not limited to operate at fixed-frequencies or restricted displacements. Electromagnetic generation is typically favored because of its slightly higher power output per unit volume. Then, a nonharmonic oscillating rotational energy scavenger prototype is proposed to harness body motion. The electromagnetic generator follows the approach from small wind turbine designs that overcome the lack of a gearbox by using a larger number of coil and magnets arrangements. The device presented here is composed of a rotor with multiple-pole permanent magnets having an eccentric weight and a stator composed of stacked planar coils. The rotor oscillations induce a voltage on the planar coil due to the eccentric mass unbalance produced by body motion. A meso-scale prototype device was then built and evaluated for energy generation. The meso-scale casing and rotor were constructed on PMMA with the help of a CNC mill machine. Commercially available discrete magnets were encased in a 25mm rotor. Commercial copper-coated polyimide film was employed to manufacture the planar coils using MEMS fabrication processes. Jewel bearings were used to finalize the arrangement. The prototypes were also tested at the listed body locations. A meso-scale generator with a 2-layer coil was capable to extract up to 234 µW of power at the ankle while walking at 3mph with a 2cm³ prototype for a power density of 117 µW/cm³.     The miniaturization of semiconductor technology and reduction in power requirements have begun to enable wireless self-sufficient devices, powered by ambient energy. To date the primary application lies in generating and transmitting sensory data. The number of sensors and their applications in automotive vehicles has grown drastically in the last decade, a trend that seems to continue still. Wireless self-powered sensors can facilitate current sensor systems by removing the need for cabling and may enable additional applications. These systems have the potential to provide new avenues of optimization in safety and performance.This thesis delves into the topic of vibrations as ambient energy source, primarily for sensors in automotive vehicles. The transduction of small amounts of vibrational, or kinetic, energy to electrical power, also known as vibrational energy harvesting, is an extensive field of research with a plethora of inventions. A short review is given for energy harvesters, in an automotive context, utilizing transduction through either the piezoelectric effect or magnetic induction. Two practical examples, for ambient vibration harvesting in vehicles, are described in more detail. The first is a piezoelectric beam for powering a strain sensor on the engines rotating flexplate. It makes combined use of centrifugal force, gravitational pull and random vibrations to enhance performance and reduce required system size. The simulated power output is 370 \ub5W at a rotation frequency of 10.5 Hz, with a bandwidth of 2.44 Hz. The second example is an energy harvesting unit placed on a belt buckle. It implements magnetic induction by the novel concept of a spring balance air gap of a magnetic circuit, to efficiently harvest minute vibrations. Simulations show the potential to achieve 52 \ub5W under normal road conditions driving at 70 km/h. Theoretical modeling of these systems is also addressed. Fundamental descriptions of the lumped and distributed models are given. Based on the lumped models of the piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) and the electromagnetic energy harvester (EMEH), a unified model is described and analyzed. New insights are gained regarding the pros and cons of the two types of energy harvester run at either resonance or anti-resonance. A numerical solution is given for the exact boundary of dimensionless quality factor and dimensionless intrinsic resistance, at which the system begins to exhibit anti-resonance. Regarding the maximum achievable power, the typical PEH is favored when running the system in anti-resonance and the typical EMEH is favored at resonance. The described modeling considers all parameters of the lumped model and thus provides a useful tool for developing vibrational energy harvester prototypes

    Sensing Systems for Respiration Monitoring: A Technical Systematic Review

    Respiratory monitoring is essential in sleep studies, sport training, patient monitoring, or health at work, among other applications. This paper presents a comprehensive systematic review of respiration sensing systems. After several systematic searches in scientific repositories, the 198 most relevant papers in this field were analyzed in detail. Different items were examined: sensing technique and sensor, respiration parameter, sensor location and size, general system setup, communication protocol, processing station, energy autonomy and power consumption, sensor validation, processing algorithm, performance evaluation, and analysis software. As a result, several trends and the remaining research challenges of respiration sensors were identified. Long-term evaluations and usability tests should be performed. Researchers designed custom experiments to validate the sensing systems, making it difficult to compare results. Therefore, another challenge is to have a common validation framework to fairly compare sensor performance. The implementation of energy-saving strategies, the incorporation of energy harvesting techniques, the calculation of volume parameters of breathing, or the effective integration of respiration sensors into clothing are other remaining research efforts. Addressing these and other challenges outlined in the paper is a required step to obtain a feasible, robust, affordable, and unobtrusive respiration sensing system

    Towards Intelligent Tire and Self-Powered Sensing Systems

    Tires are the interface between a vehicle and the ground providing forces and isolation to the vehicle. For vehicle safety, stability, maintenance, and performance, it is vital to estimate or measure tire forces, inflation pressure, and contact friction coefficient. Estimation methods can predict tire forces to some extent however; they fail in harsh maneuvers and are dependent on road surface conditions for which there is no robust estimation method. Measurement devices for tire forces exist for vehicle testing but at the cost of tens of thousands of dollars. Tire pressure-monitoring sensors (TPMS) are the only sensors available in newer and higher end vehicles to provide tire pressure, but there are no sensors to measure road surface condition or tire forces for production vehicles. With the prospect of autonomous driving on roads in near future, it is paramount to make the vehicles safe on any driving and road condition. This is only possible by additional sensors to make up for the driver’s cognitive and sensory system. Measuring road condition and tire forces especially in autonomous vehicles are vital in their safety, reliability, and public confidence in automated driving. Real time measurement of road condition and tire forces in buses and trucks can significantly improve the safety of road transportation system, and in miming/construction and off-road vehicles can improve performance, tire life and reduce operational costs. In this thesis, five different types of sensors are designed, modelled, optimized and fabricated with the objective of developing an intelligent tire. In order to design these sensors,~both electromagnetic generator (EMG) and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) are used. In the first two initial designed sensors, with the combination of EMG and TENG into a single package, two hybridized sensors are fabricated with promising potential for self-powered sensing. The potential of developed sensors are investigated for tire-condition monitoring system (TCMS). Considering the impressive properties of TENG units of the developed hybridized devices, three different flexible nanogenerators, only based on this newly developed technology, are developed for TCMS. The design, modelling, working mechanism, fabrication procedure, and experimental results of these TENG sensors are fully presented for applications in TCMS. Among these three fabricated sensors, one of them shows an excellent capability for TCMS because of its high flexibility, stable and high electrical output,and an encapsulated structure. The high flexibility of developed TENG sensor is a very appealing feature for TCMS, which cannot be found in any available commercial sensor. The fabricated TENG sensors are used for developing an intelligent tire module to be eventually used for road testing. Several laboratory and road tests are performed to study the capability of this newly developed TENG-based sensor for tire-condition monitoring system. However the development of this sensor is in its early stage, it shows a promising potential for installation into the hostile environment of tires and measuring tire-road interacting forces. A comparative studies are provided with respect to Michigan Scientific transducer to investigate the potential of this flexible nanogenerator for TCMS. It is worth mentioning that this PhD thesis presents one of the earliest works on the application of TENG-based sensor for a real-life system. Also, the potential of commercially available thermally and mechanically durable Micro Fiber Composite (MFC) sensor is experimentally investigated for TCMS with fabricating another set of intelligent tire. Several testing scenarios are performed to examine the potential of these sensors for TCMS taking into account a simultaneous measurement from Michigan Scientific transducer. Although both flexibility and the cost of this sensor is not comparable with the fabricated TENG device, they have shown a considerable and reliable performance for online measuring of tire dynamical parameters in different testing scenarios, as they can be used for both energy harvesting and sensing application in TCMS. The extensive road testing results based on the MFC sensors provide a valuable set of data for future research in TCMS. It is experimentally shown that MFC sensor can generate up to 1.4 μW\mu W electrical power at the speed of 28 [kph][kph]. This electrical output shows the high capability of this sensor for self-powered sensing application in TCMS. Results of this thesis can be used as a framework by researchers towards self-powered sensing system for real-world applications such as intelligent tires

    Vibration-based Energy Harvesting for Wireless Sensors used in Machine Condition Monitoring

    In a wide range of industries, machine condition monitoring is one of the most cost effective ways to minimise maintenance efforts and machine downtime. To implement such a system, wireless solutions have increasingly become an attractive proposition due to the ease of installation and minimal infrastructure alternation. However, currently most wireless sensors in the world are powered by a finite battery source. The dependence of batteries not only requires frequent maintenance, but also has adverse environmental consequences associated with battery disposal. These reasons render massive deployment of wireless sensors in the industry problematic. With the advances in semiconductors, power consumption of wireless sensors has been continuously decreasing. It is an inevitable trend for self-powered wireless sensors to emerge and become the norm for machine and environmental monitoring. In this research, vibration is chosen to be the energy source to enable self-powered wireless sensors due to its ubiquitousness in machinery and industrial environments. As a result of relying on resonance, the biggest challenge for vibration-based energy harvesters is their narrow bandwidth. Even a small deviation of the vibration frequency can dramatically reduce the power output. The primary goal of this research is to address this problem. In particular, Piezoelectric generators are identified to be the most suitable technology. In this work, extensive theoretical and experimental studies are conducted in single mass and multi-modal harvesters, and in resonance tuning harvesters by modulus and impedance matching as well as by mechanical actuation. Mathematical modelling plays a significant role in energy harvester designs. A dynamic model that generalises the single degree of freedom models and the continuum models is derived and validated by experiments. The model serves as the building block for the whole research, and it is further refined for the investigation of modulus and impedance matching. In the study of multi-modal harvesters, a continuum model for double-mass piezoelectric cantilever beams is derived and experimentally validated. To study the feasibility of resonance tuning by mechanical means, prototypes were built and performance evaluated. This document details the theoretical basis, concepts and experimental results that extend the current knowledge in the field of energy harvesting. This research work, being highly industrially focused, is believed to be a very significant step forward to a commercial energy harvester that works for a wide range of vibration frequencies
