A semidefinite relaxation procedure for fault-tolerant observer design
A fault-tolerant observer design methodology is proposed. The aim is to guarantee a minimum level of closed-loop performance under all possible sensor fault combinations while optimizing performance under the nominal, fault-free condition. A novel approach is proposed to tackle the combinatorial nature of the problem, which is computationally intractable even for a moderate number of sensors, by recasting the problem as a robust performance problem, where the uncertainty set is composed of all combinations of a set of binary variables. A procedure based on an elimination lemma and an extension of a semidefinite relaxation procedure for binary variables is then used to derive sufficient conditions (necessary and sufficient in the case of one binary variable) for the solution of the problem which significantly reduces the number of matrix inequalities needed to solve the problem. The procedure is illustrated by considering a fault-tolerant observer switching scheme in which the observer outputs track the actual sensor fault condition. A numerical example from an electric power application is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the design
Emergence of slow-switching assemblies in structured neuronal networks
Unraveling the interplay between connectivity and spatio-temporal dynamics in
neuronal networks is a key step to advance our understanding of neuronal
information processing. Here we investigate how particular features of network
connectivity underpin the propensity of neural networks to generate
slow-switching assembly (SSA) dynamics, i.e., sustained epochs of increased
firing within assemblies of neurons which transition slowly between different
assemblies throughout the network. We show that the emergence of SSA activity
is linked to spectral properties of the asymmetric synaptic weight matrix. In
particular, the leading eigenvalues that dictate the slow dynamics exhibit a
gap with respect to the bulk of the spectrum, and the associated Schur vectors
exhibit a measure of block-localization on groups of neurons, thus resulting in
coherent dynamical activity on those groups. Through simple rate models, we
gain analytical understanding of the origin and importance of the spectral gap,
and use these insights to develop new network topologies with alternative
connectivity paradigms which also display SSA activity. Specifically, SSA
dynamics involving excitatory and inhibitory neurons can be achieved by
modifying the connectivity patterns between both types of neurons. We also show
that SSA activity can occur at multiple timescales reflecting a hierarchy in
the connectivity, and demonstrate the emergence of SSA in small-world like
networks. Our work provides a step towards understanding how network structure
(uncovered through advancements in neuroanatomy and connectomics) can impact on
spatio-temporal neural activity and constrain the resulting dynamics.Comment: The first two authors contributed equally -- 18 pages, including

A multi-exit recirculating optical packet buffer
We propose a new type of recirculating buffer, the multiexit buffer (MEB), for use in asynchronous optical packet switches with statistical multiplexing, operating at speeds of 40-100 Gb/s. We demonstrate that the use of this type of buffer dramatically reduces the packet loss for a given buffer depth, thus reducing the buffer depth requirements and the overall cost of the optical packet switching. Physical layer simulation results show that it is possible to build this type of buffer with currently available active components. A hybrid optoelectronic control system is proposed, which allows control of the MEB with a minimum number of active components
Full- & Reduced-Order State-Space Modeling of Wind Turbine Systems with Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Generator
Wind energy is an integral part of nowadays energy supply and one of the
fastest growing sources of electricity in the world today. Accurate models for
wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) are of key interest for the analysis and
control design of present and future energy systems. Existing control-oriented
WECSs models are subject to unstructured simplifications, which have not been
discussed in literature so far. Thus, this technical note presents are thorough
derivation of a physical state-space model for permanent magnet synchronous
generator WECSs. The physical model considers all dynamic effects that
significantly influence the system's power output, including the switching of
the power electronics. Alternatively, the model is formulated in the -
and -reference frame. Secondly, a complete control and operation
management system for the wind regimes II and III and the transition between
the regimes is presented. The control takes practical effects such as input
saturation and integral windup into account. Thirdly, by a structured model
reduction procedure, two state-space models of WECS with reduced complexity are
derived: a non-switching model and a non-switching reduced-order model. The
validity of the models is illustrated and compared through a numerical

Chaos controller for switching regulators aiming enhanced design-space towards miniaturization
This paper tackles the control of fast-scale instabilities in a buck switching power converter aiming to expand its design-space towards miniaturization. After briefly revisiting the working principle of existing chaos controllers, the paper explores an alternative approach based on amplifying the harmonic at the switching frequency. Numerical simulations show that the proposed controller can concurrently improve both fast-scale and slow-scale stability margins. Finally, the paper proposes a chaos controller combined with an output ripple reduction network and studies their interaction with the aim of achieving both low-ripple and improved stability.Preprin
Distributed Consensus of Linear Multi-Agent Systems with Switching Directed Topologies
This paper addresses the distributed consensus problem for a linear
multi-agent system with switching directed communication topologies. By
appropriately introducing a linear transformation, the consensus problem is
equivalently converted to a stabilization problem for a class of switched
linear systems. Some sufficient consensus conditions are then derived by using
tools from the matrix theory and stability analysis of switched systems. It is
proved that consensus in such a multi-agent system can be ensured if each agent
is stabilizable and each possible directed topology contains a directed
