Acquiring Word-Meaning Mappings for Natural Language Interfaces
This paper focuses on a system, WOLFIE (WOrd Learning From Interpreted
Examples), that acquires a semantic lexicon from a corpus of sentences paired
with semantic representations. The lexicon learned consists of phrases paired
with meaning representations. WOLFIE is part of an integrated system that
learns to transform sentences into representations such as logical database
queries. Experimental results are presented demonstrating WOLFIE's ability to
learn useful lexicons for a database interface in four different natural
languages. The usefulness of the lexicons learned by WOLFIE are compared to
those acquired by a similar system, with results favorable to WOLFIE. A second
set of experiments demonstrates WOLFIE's ability to scale to larger and more
difficult, albeit artificially generated, corpora. In natural language
acquisition, it is difficult to gather the annotated data needed for supervised
learning; however, unannotated data is fairly plentiful. Active learning
methods attempt to select for annotation and training only the most informative
examples, and therefore are potentially very useful in natural language
applications. However, most results to date for active learning have only
considered standard classification tasks. To reduce annotation effort while
maintaining accuracy, we apply active learning to semantic lexicons. We show
that active learning can significantly reduce the number of annotated examples
required to achieve a given level of performance
Decision-theoretic control of EUVE telescope scheduling
This paper describes a decision theoretic scheduler (DTS) designed to employ state-of-the-art probabilistic inference technology to speed the search for efficient solutions to constraint-satisfaction problems. Our approach involves assessing the performance of heuristic control strategies that are normally hard-coded into scheduling systems and using probabilistic inference to aggregate this information in light of the features of a given problem. The Bayesian Problem-Solver (BPS) introduced a similar approach to solving single agent and adversarial graph search patterns yielding orders-of-magnitude improvement over traditional techniques. Initial efforts suggest that similar improvements will be realizable when applied to typical constraint-satisfaction scheduling problems
Fundamental Irreversibility: Planckian or Schr\"odinger-Newton?
The inception of a universal gravity-related irreversibility took place
originally in quantum cosmology. The ultimate reason of universal
irreversibility is thought to come from black holes close to the Planck scale.
Completely different instances of irreversibilities are quantum state
reductions unrelated to gravity or relativity but related to measurement
devices. However, an intricate relationship between Newton gravity and
quantized matter might result in fundamental and spontaneous quantum state
reduction --- in the non-relativistic Schr\"odinger-Newton context. The above
two concepts of fundamental irreversibility emerged and evolved with few or
even no interactions. The purpose here is to draw a parallel between the two
approaches first, and to ask rather than answer the question: can both the
Planckian and the Schr\"odinger-Newton indeterminacies/irreversibilities be two
faces of the same universe. A related personal note of the author's 1986

Mycological rationality : Heuristics, perception and decision-making in mushroom foraging
How do mushroom foragers make safe and efficient decisions under uncertainty, or deal with the genuine risks of misidentification and poisoning? This article is an inquiry into ecological rationality, heuristics, perception, and decision-making in mushroom foraging. By surveying 894 Finnish mushroom foragers, this article illustrates how socially learned rules of thumb and heuristics are used in mushroom foraging, and how simple heuristics are often complemented by more complex and intuitive decision-making. The results illustrate how traditional foraging cultures have evolved precautionary heuristics to deal with uncertainties and poisonous species, and how foragers develop selective attention through experience. The study invites us to consider whether other human foraging cultures might use heuristics similarly, how and why such traditions have culturally evolved, and whether early hunter-gatherers might have used simple heuristics to deal with uncertainty.Peer reviewe
Project scheduling under undertainty – survey and research potentials.
The vast majority of the research efforts in project scheduling assume complete information about the scheduling problem to be solved and a static deterministic environment within which the pre-computed baseline schedule will be executed. However, in the real world, project activities are subject to considerable uncertainty, that is gradually resolved during project execution. In this survey we review the fundamental approaches for scheduling under uncertainty: reactive scheduling, stochastic project scheduling, stochastic GERT network scheduling, fuzzy project scheduling, robust (proactive) scheduling and sensitivity analysis. Bertrand Russsell's Religion without God
The task of this paper is to reconstruct Bertrand Russell project for religion without God and dogma. Russell made two attempts in this direction, first in the essay “Free Man’s Worship” (1903), and then, in theoretical form, in the paper “The Essence of Religion” (1912). Russell’s explorations of religious impulses run in parallel with his work on technical philosophy.
According to Russell from 1903–12, religion is an important part of human pursuits. However, whereas the ordinary man believes in God, the freeman embraces a religion without fear and dogma. He strives for a union with the universe achieved in contemplation made from many perspectives through “impartiality of vision”. For this reason freemen renounce the Self and the Will.
Russell abandoned his project for religion without God mainly because of Wittgenstein’s criticism. In his later writings he continued to criticize the religion of the ordinary man, without to further develop a positive philosophy of religion, though
Canonical, Stable, General Mapping using Context Schemes
Motivation: Sequence mapping is the cornerstone of modern genomics. However,
most existing sequence mapping algorithms are insufficiently general.
Results: We introduce context schemes: a method that allows the unambiguous
recognition of a reference base in a query sequence by testing the query for
substrings from an algorithmically defined set. Context schemes only map when
there is a unique best mapping, and define this criterion uniformly for all
reference bases. Mappings under context schemes can also be made stable, so
that extension of the query string (e.g. by increasing read length) will not
alter the mapping of previously mapped positions. Context schemes are general
in several senses. They natively support the detection of arbitrary complex,
novel rearrangements relative to the reference. They can scale over orders of
magnitude in query sequence length. Finally, they are trivially extensible to
more complex reference structures, such as graphs, that incorporate additional
variation. We demonstrate empirically the existence of high performance context
schemes, and present efficient context scheme mapping algorithms.
