    Wind Power Forecasting Methods Based on Deep Learning: A Survey

    Accurate wind power forecasting in wind farm can effectively reduce the enormous impact on grid operation safety when high permeability intermittent power supply is connected to the power grid. Aiming to provide reference strategies for relevant researchers as well as practical applications, this paper attempts to provide the literature investigation and methods analysis of deep learning, enforcement learning and transfer learning in wind speed and wind power forecasting modeling. Usually, wind speed and wind power forecasting around a wind farm requires the calculation of the next moment of the definite state, which is usually achieved based on the state of the atmosphere that encompasses nearby atmospheric pressure, temperature, roughness, and obstacles. As an effective method of high-dimensional feature extraction, deep neural network can theoretically deal with arbitrary nonlinear transformation through proper structural design, such as adding noise to outputs, evolutionary learning used to optimize hidden layer weights, optimize the objective function so as to save information that can improve the output accuracy while filter out the irrelevant or less affected information for forecasting. The establishment of high-precision wind speed and wind power forecasting models is always a challenge due to the randomness, instantaneity and seasonal characteristics

    Neuroengineering of Clustering Algorithms

    Cluster analysis can be broadly divided into multivariate data visualization, clustering algorithms, and cluster validation. This dissertation contributes neural network-based techniques to perform all three unsupervised learning tasks. Particularly, the first paper provides a comprehensive review on adaptive resonance theory (ART) models for engineering applications and provides context for the four subsequent papers. These papers are devoted to enhancements of ART-based clustering algorithms from (a) a practical perspective by exploiting the visual assessment of cluster tendency (VAT) sorting algorithm as a preprocessor for ART offline training, thus mitigating ordering effects; and (b) an engineering perspective by designing a family of multi-criteria ART models: dual vigilance fuzzy ART and distributed dual vigilance fuzzy ART (both of which are capable of detecting complex cluster structures), merge ART (aggregates partitions and lessens ordering effects in online learning), and cluster validity index vigilance in fuzzy ART (features a robust vigilance parameter selection and alleviates ordering effects in offline learning). The sixth paper consists of enhancements to data visualization using self-organizing maps (SOMs) by depicting in the reduced dimension and topology-preserving SOM grid information-theoretic similarity measures between neighboring neurons. This visualization\u27s parameters are estimated using samples selected via a single-linkage procedure, thereby generating heatmaps that portray more homogeneous within-cluster similarities and crisper between-cluster boundaries. The seventh paper presents incremental cluster validity indices (iCVIs) realized by (a) incorporating existing formulations of online computations for clusters\u27 descriptors, or (b) modifying an existing ART-based model and incrementally updating local density counts between prototypes.     The impact of artificial intelligence in the rail industry

    Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being introduced in enterprise systems due to the promising benefits that such a disruptive technology can present, even when taking into account its risks and challenges. In the rail industry, AI is being implemented to help improve train delays, reduce infrastructure and rolling stock maintenance costs, and to improve customer’s experience. In intermodal terminals, this technology helps improve passenger flow through hubs, avoids freight cargo losses and improves cargo monitoring inside the terminals. The aim of this investigation is to study the impact of Artificial Intelligence in the rail industry, and, in order to conduct this investigation, a quantitative methodology approach was used to answer three research questions. Initially, an analysis of the differences of sociodemographic factors on the knowledge about AI occurred. Posteriorly, an analysis of the influence of the benefits, risks and trust on the implementation of AI in the rail industry was conducted and, in order to expand the scope of the study outside the rail industry, an analysis of the impact of AI in the intermodal transportation systems was completed. The results show that sociodemographic differences among the respondent’s knowledge about AI exist, along with the confirmation that the factors of benefits, risks and trust influence the implementation of AI in the rail industry. Regarding intermodal transport systems, the same effects and additionally the awareness of AI were proved to influence the implementation of these kinds of systems.A Inteligência Artificial (IA) está a ser implementada em sistemas empresariais devido aos benefícios que esta tecnologia disruptiva pode apresentar, mesmo tendo em conta os riscos e desafios associados. Na indústria ferroviária, a IA está a ser aplicada para melhorar os atrasos na chegada de comboios, para reduzir os custos de manutenção tradicionais de comboios e da infraestrutura, e para melhorar a experiência do cliente. No que diz respeito ao transporte intermodal, esta tecnologia pode melhorar o fluxo de passageiros dentro dos hubs, evitar perdas de mercadoria e melhorar a sua monitorização dentro dos terminais logísticos. O objetivo desta investigação é o estudo do impacto da Inteligência Artificial na indústria ferroviária e, para tal, foi usada uma metodologia quantitativa para responder a três questões de pesquisa. Primeiramente, ocorreu uma análise das diferenças de fatores sociodemográficos no conhecimento de IA. Posteriormente, ocorreu também uma análise da influência dos benefícios, riscos e confiança na implementação da tecnologia de IA nos sistemas desta indústria e, adicionalmente, para expandir esta investigação para além da indústria ferroviária, ocorreu uma análise do impacto da IA nos sistemas de transporte intermodais. Os resultados obtidos permitem demostrar que existem diferenças sociodemográficas entre os inquiridos e existe também a confirmação da influência que os benefícios, riscos e confiança podem trazer para a implementação de IA nesta indústria. No que diz respeito aos sistemas de transporte intermodal, os mesmos efeitos já referidos e adicionalmente da noção da IA na implementação destes sistemas, são confirmados

    Fast and robust image feature matching methods for computer vision applications

    Service robotic systems are designed to solve tasks such as recognizing and manipulating objects, understanding natural scenes, navigating in dynamic and populated environments. It's immediately evident that such tasks cannot be modeled in all necessary details as easy as it is with industrial robot tasks; therefore, service robotic system has to have the ability to sense and interact with the surrounding physical environment through a multitude of sensors and actuators. Environment sensing is one of the core problems that limit the deployment of mobile service robots since existing sensing systems are either too slow or too expensive. Visual sensing is the most promising way to provide a cost effective solution to the mobile robot sensing problem. It's usually achieved using one or several digital cameras placed on the robot or distributed in its environment. Digital cameras are information rich sensors and are relatively inexpensive and can be used to solve a number of key problems for robotics and other autonomous intelligent systems, such as visual servoing, robot navigation, object recognition, pose estimation, and much more. The key challenges to taking advantage of this powerful and inexpensive sensor is to come up with algorithms that can reliably and quickly extract and match the useful visual information necessary to automatically interpret the environment in real-time. Although considerable research has been conducted in recent years on the development of algorithms for computer and robot vision problems, there are still open research challenges in the context of the reliability, accuracy and processing time. Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) is one of the most widely used methods that has recently attracted much attention in the computer vision community due to the fact that SIFT features are highly distinctive, and invariant to scale, rotation and illumination changes. In addition, SIFT features are relatively easy to extract and to match against a large database of local features. Generally, there are two main drawbacks of SIFT algorithm, the first drawback is that the computational complexity of the algorithm increases rapidly with the number of key-points, especially at the matching step due to the high dimensionality of the SIFT feature descriptor. The other one is that the SIFT features are not robust to large viewpoint changes. These drawbacks limit the reasonable use of SIFT algorithm for robot vision applications since they require often real-time performance and dealing with large viewpoint changes. This dissertation proposes three new approaches to address the constraints faced when using SIFT features for robot vision applications, Speeded up SIFT feature matching, robust SIFT feature matching and the inclusion of the closed loop control structure into object recognition and pose estimation systems. The proposed methods are implemented and tested on the FRIEND II/III service robotic system. The achieved results are valuable to adapt SIFT algorithm to the robot vision applications

    Online Multi-Stage Deep Architectures for Feature Extraction and Object Recognition

    Multi-stage visual architectures have recently found success in achieving high classification accuracies over image datasets with large variations in pose, lighting, and scale. Inspired by techniques currently at the forefront of deep learning, such architectures are typically composed of one or more layers of preprocessing, feature encoding, and pooling to extract features from raw images. Training these components traditionally relies on large sets of patches that are extracted from a potentially large image dataset. In this context, high-dimensional feature space representations are often helpful for obtaining the best classification performances and providing a higher degree of invariance to object transformations. Large datasets with high-dimensional features complicate the implementation of visual architectures in memory constrained environments. This dissertation constructs online learning replacements for the components within a multi-stage architecture and demonstrates that the proposed replacements (namely fuzzy competitive clustering, an incremental covariance estimator, and multi-layer neural network) can offer performance competitive with their offline batch counterparts while providing a reduced memory footprint. The online nature of this solution allows for the development of a method for adjusting parameters within the architecture via stochastic gradient descent. Testing over multiple datasets shows the potential benefits of this methodology when appropriate priors on the initial parameters are unknown. Alternatives to batch based decompositions for a whitening preprocessing stage which take advantage of natural image statistics and allow simple dictionary learners to work well in the problem domain are also explored. Expansions of the architecture using additional pooling statistics and multiple layers are presented and indicate that larger codebook sizes are not the only step forward to higher classification accuracies. Experimental results from these expansions further indicate the important role of sparsity and appropriate encodings within multi-stage visual feature extraction architectures

    Applied deep learning in intelligent transportation systems and embedding exploration

    Deep learning techniques have achieved tremendous success in many real applications in recent years and show their great potential in many areas including transportation. Even though transportation becomes increasingly indispensable in people’s daily life, its related problems, such as traffic congestion and energy waste, have not been completely solved, yet some problems have become even more critical. This dissertation focuses on solving the following fundamental problems: (1) passenger demand prediction, (2) transportation mode detection, (3) traffic light control, in the transportation field using deep learning. The dissertation also extends the application of deep learning to an embedding system for visualization and data retrieval. The first part of this dissertation is about a Spatio-TEmporal Fuzzy neural Network (STEF-Net) which accurately predicts passenger demand by incorporating the complex interaction of all known important factors, such as temporal, spatial and external information. Specifically, a convolutional long short-term memory network is employed to simultaneously capture spatio-temporal feature interaction, and a fuzzy neural network to model external factors. A novel feature fusion method with convolution and an attention layer is proposed to keep the temporal relation and discriminative spatio-temporal feature interaction. Experiments on a large-scale real-world dataset show the proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches. The second part is a light-weight and energy-efficient system which detects transportation modes using only accelerometer sensors in smartphones. Understanding people’s transportation modes is beneficial to many civilian applications, such as urban transportation planning. The system collects accelerometer data in an efficient way and leverages a convolutional neural network to determine transportation modes. Different architectures and classification methods are tested with the proposed convolutional neural network to optimize the system design. Performance evaluation shows that the proposed approach achieves better accuracy than existing work in detecting people’s transportation modes. The third component of this dissertation is a deep reinforcement learning model, based on Q learning, to control the traffic light. Existing inefficient traffic light control causes numerous problems, such as long delay and waste of energy. In the proposed model, the complex traffic scenario is quantified as states by collecting data and dividing the whole intersection into grids. The timing changes of a traffic light are the actions, which are modeled as a high-dimension Markov decision process. The reward is the cumulative waiting time difference between two cycles. To solve the model, a convolutional neural network is employed to map states to rewards, which is further optimized by several components, such as dueling network, target network, double Q-learning network, and prioritized experience replay. The simulation results in Simulation of Urban MObility (SUMO) show the efficiency of the proposed model in controlling traffic lights. The last part of this dissertation studies the hierarchical structure in an embedding system. Traditional embedding approaches associate a real-valued embedding vector with each symbol or data point, which generates storage-inefficient representation and fails to effectively encode the internal semantic structure of data. A regularized autoencoder framework is proposed to learn compact Hierarchical K-way D-dimensional (HKD) discrete embedding of data points, aiming at capturing semantic structures of data. Experimental results on synthetic and real-world datasets show that the proposed HKD embedding can effectively reveal the semantic structure of data via visualization and greatly reduce the search space of nearest neighbor retrieval while preserving high accuracy
