A Least Informative Distribution of Ranging Errors in Robust Estimation of Localization
In the framework of the Huber's minimax variance approach to designing robust estimates of localization parameters, a generalization of the classical least informative distributions minimizing Fisher information for location is obtained in the wide class of ranging error distributions with a bounded quantile value. The considered variational problem set up naturally originates from the real-life problem of estimation of the unknown coordinates of an asset surrounded by the beacons with known positions
Target Tracking in Confined Environments with Uncertain Sensor Positions
To ensure safety in confined environments such as mines or subway tunnels, a
(wireless) sensor network can be deployed to monitor various environmental
conditions. One of its most important applications is to track personnel,
mobile equipment and vehicles. However, the state-of-the-art algorithms assume
that the positions of the sensors are perfectly known, which is not necessarily
true due to imprecise placement and/or dropping of sensors. Therefore, we
propose an automatic approach for simultaneous refinement of sensors' positions
and target tracking. We divide the considered area in a finite number of cells,
define dynamic and measurement models, and apply a discrete variant of belief
propagation which can efficiently solve this high-dimensional problem, and
handle all non-Gaussian uncertainties expected in this kind of environments.
Finally, we use ray-tracing simulation to generate an artificial mine-like
environment and generate synthetic measurement data. According to our extensive
simulation study, the proposed approach performs significantly better than
standard Bayesian target tracking and localization algorithms, and provides
robustness against outliers.Comment: IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, 201
Cooperative localization by dual foot-mounted inertial sensors and inter-agent ranging
The implementation challenges of cooperative localization by dual
foot-mounted inertial sensors and inter-agent ranging are discussed and work on
the subject is reviewed. System architecture and sensor fusion are identified
as key challenges. A partially decentralized system architecture based on
step-wise inertial navigation and step-wise dead reckoning is presented. This
architecture is argued to reduce the computational cost and required
communication bandwidth by around two orders of magnitude while only giving
negligible information loss in comparison with a naive centralized
implementation. This makes a joint global state estimation feasible for up to a
platoon-sized group of agents. Furthermore, robust and low-cost sensor fusion
for the considered setup, based on state space transformation and
marginalization, is presented. The transformation and marginalization are used
to give the necessary flexibility for presented sampling based updates for the
inter-agent ranging and ranging free fusion of the two feet of an individual
agent. Finally, characteristics of the suggested implementation are
demonstrated with simulations and a real-time system implementation.Comment: 14 page
Efficient Version-Space Reduction for Visual Tracking
Discrminative trackers, employ a classification approach to separate the
target from its background. To cope with variations of the target shape and
appearance, the classifier is updated online with different samples of the
target and the background. Sample selection, labeling and updating the
classifier is prone to various sources of errors that drift the tracker. We
introduce the use of an efficient version space shrinking strategy to reduce
the labeling errors and enhance its sampling strategy by measuring the
uncertainty of the tracker about the samples. The proposed tracker, utilize an
ensemble of classifiers that represents different hypotheses about the target,
diversify them using boosting to provide a larger and more consistent coverage
of the version-space and tune the classifiers' weights in voting. The proposed
system adjusts the model update rate by promoting the co-training of the
short-memory ensemble with a long-memory oracle. The proposed tracker
outperformed state-of-the-art trackers on different sequences bearing various
tracking challenges.Comment: CRV'17 Conferenc
Robust Error Estimation Based on Factor-Graph Models for Non-Line-of-Sight Localization
This paper presents a method to estimate the covariances of the inputs in a factor-graph formulation for localization under non-line-of-sight conditions. A general solution based on covariance estimation and M-estimators in linear regression problems, is presented that is shown to give unbiased estimators of multiple variances and are robust against outliers. An iteratively re-weighted least squares algorithm is proposed to jointly compute the proposed variance estimators and the state estimates for the nonlinear factor graph optimization. The efficacy of the method is illustrated in a simulation study using a robot localization problem under various process and measurement models and measurement outlier scenarios. A case study involving a Global Positioning System based localization in an urban environment and data containing multipath problems demonstrates the application of the proposed technique
