    Towards cooperative urban traffic management: Investigating voting for travel groups

    In den letzten Jahrzehnten haben intelligente Verkehrssysteme an Bedeutung gewonnen. Wir betrachten einen Teilbereich des kooperativen Verkehrsmanagements, nĂ€mlich kollektive Entscheidungsfindung in Gruppen von Verkehrsteilnehmern. In dem uns interessierenden Szenario werden Touristen, die eine Stadt besuchen, gebeten, Reisegruppen zu bilden und sich auf gemeinsame Besuchsziele (Points of Interest) zu einigen. Wir konzentrieren uns auf WĂ€hlen als Gruppenentscheidungsverfahren. Unsere Fragestellung ist, wie sich verschiedene Algorithmen zur Bildung von Reisegruppen und zur Bestimmung gemeinsamer Reiseziele hinsichtlich der System- und Benutzerziele unterscheiden, wobei wir als Systemziel große Gruppen und als Benutzerziele hohe prĂ€ferenzbasierte Zufriedenheit und geringen organisatorischen Aufwand definieren. Wir streben an, einen Kompromiss zwischen System- und Benutzerzielen zu erreichen. Neu ist, dass wir die inhĂ€renten Auswirkungen verschiedener Wahlregeln, Wahlprotokolle und Gruppenbildungsalgorithmen auf Benutzer- und Systemziele untersuchen. Altere Arbeiten zur kollektiven Entscheidungsfindung im Verkehr konzentrieren sich auf andere ZielgrĂ¶ĂŸen, betrachten nicht die Gruppenbildung, vergleichen nicht die Auswirkungen mehrerer Wahlalgorithmen, benutzen andere Wahlalgorithmen, berĂŒcksichtigen nicht klar definierte Gruppen von Verkehrsteilnehmern, verwenden Wahlen fĂŒr andere Anwendungen oder betrachten andere Algorithmen zur kollektiven Entscheidungsfindung als Wahlen. Wir untersuchen in der Hauptsimulationsreihe verschiedene Gruppenbildungsalgorithmen, Wahlprotokolle und Komiteewahlregeln. Wir betrachten sequentielle Gruppenbildung vs. koordinierte Gruppenbildung, Basisprotokoll vs. iteratives Protokoll und die Komiteewahlregeln Minisum-Approval, Minimax-Approval und Minisum-Ranksum. Die Simulationen wurden mit dem neu entwickelten Simulationswerkzeug LightVoting durchgefšuhrt, das auf dem Multi-Agenten-Framework LightJason basiert. Die Experimente der Hauptsimulationsreihe zeigen, dass die Komiteewahlregel Minisum-Ranksum in den meisten FĂ€llen bessere oder ebenso gute Ergebnisse erzielt wie die Komiteewahlregeln Minisum-Approval und Minimax-Approval. Das iterative Protokoll tendiert dazu, eine Verbesserung hinsichtlich der prĂ€ferenzbasierten Zufriedenheit zu erbringen, auf Kosten einer deutlichen Verschlechterung hinsichtlich der GruppengrĂ¶ĂŸe. Die koordinierte Gruppenbildung tendiert dazu, eine Verbesserung hinsichtlich der prĂ€ferenzbasierten Zufriedenheit zu erbringen bei relativ geringen Kosten in Bezug auf die GruppengrĂ¶ĂŸe. Dies fĂŒhrt uns dazu, die Komiteewahlregel Minisum-Ranksum, das Basisprotokoll und die koordinierte Gruppenbildung zu empfehlen, um einen Kompromiss zwischen System- und Benutzerzielen zu erreichen. Wir demonstrieren auch die Auswirkungen verschiedener Kombinationen von Gruppenbildungsalgorithmen und Wahlprotokollen auf die Reisekosten. Hier bietet die Kombination aus Basisprotokoll und koordinierter Gruppenbildung einen Kompromiss zwischen der prĂ€ferenzbasierten Zufriedenheit und den Reisekosten. ZusĂ€tzlich zur Hauptsimulationsreihe bieten wir ein erweitertes Modell an, das die PrĂ€ferenzen der Reisenden generiert, indem es die AttraktivitĂ€t der möglichen Ziele und Distanzkosten, basierend auf den Entfernungen zwischen den möglichen Zielen, kombiniert. Als weiteren Anwendungsfall von Wahlverfahren betrachten wir ein Verfahren zur Treffpunktempfehlung, bei dem eine Bewertungs-Wahlregel und eine Minimax-Wahlregel zur Bestimmung von Treffpunkten verwendet werden. Bei kleineren Gruppen ist die durchschnittliche maximale Reisezeit unter der Bewertungs-Wahlregel deutlich höher. Bei grĂ¶ĂŸeren Gruppen nimmt der Unterschied ab. Bei kleineren Gruppen ist die durchschnittliche VerspĂ€tung fĂŒr die Gruppe unter der Minimax-Wahlregel hoch, bei grĂ¶ĂŸeren Gruppen nimmt sie ab. Es ist also sinnvoll fĂŒr kleinere Gruppen, die Minimax-Wahlregel zu verwenden, wenn man eine fairere Verteilung der Reisezeiten anstrebt, und die Bewertungs-Wahlregel zu verwenden, wenn das Ziel stattdessen ist, Verzögerungen fĂŒr die Gruppe zu vermeiden. FĂŒr zukĂŒnftige Arbeiten wĂ€re es sinnvoll, das Simulationskonzept anzupassen, um reale Bedingungen und Anforderungen berĂŒcksichtigen zu können. Weitere Möglichkeiten fĂŒr zukĂŒnftige Arbeiten wĂ€ren die Betrachtung zusĂ€tzlicher Algorithmen und Modelle, wie zum Beispiel die Betrachtung kombinatorischer Wahlen oder die DurchfĂŒhrung von Simulationen auf der Grundlage des erweiterten Modells, die BerĂŒcksichtigung der Rolle finanzieller Anreize zur Förderung von Ridesharing oder Platooning und die Nutzung des LightVoting-Tools fĂŒr weitere Forschungsanwendungen.In the last decades, intelligent transport systems have gained importance. We consider a subarea of cooperative traffic management, namely collective decision-making in groups of traffic participants. In the scenario we are studying, tourists visiting a city are asked to form travel groups and to agree on common points of interest. We focus on voting as a collective decision-making process. Our question is how different algorithms for the formation of travel groups and for determining common travel destinations differ with respect to system and user goals, where we define as system goal large groups and as user goals high preference satisfaction and low organisational effort. We aim at achieving a compromise between system and user goals. What is new is that we investigate the inherent effects of different voting rules, voting protocols and grouping algorithms on user and system goals. Older works on collective decision-making in traffic focus on other target quantities, do not consider group formation, do not compare the effects of several voting algorithms, use other voting algorithms, do not consider clearly defined groups of vehicles, use voting for other applications or use other collective decision-making algorithms than voting. In the main simulation series, we examine different grouping algorithms, voting protocols and committee voting rules. We consider sequential grouping vs. coordinated grouping, basic protocol vs. iterative protocol and the committee voting rules Minisum-Approval, Minimax-Approval and Minisum-Ranksum. The simulations were conducted using the newly developed simulation tool LightVoting, which is based on the multi-agent framework LightJason. The experiments of the main simulation series show that the committee voting rule Minisum-Ranksum in most cases yields better than or as good results as the committee voting rules Minisum-Approval and Minimax-Approval. The iterative protocol tends to yield an improvement regarding preference satisfaction, at the cost of strong deterioriation regarding the group size. The coordinated grouping tends to yield an improvement regarding the preference satisfaction at relative small cost regarding the group size. This leads us to recommend the committee voting rule Minisum-Ranksum, the basic protocol and coordinated grouping in order to achieve a compromise between system and user goals. We also demonstrate the effect of different combinations of grouping algorithms and voting protocols on travel costs. Here, the combination of the basic protocol and coordinated grouping yields a compromise between preference satisfaction and traveller costs. Additionally to the main simulation series, we provide an extended model which generates traveller preferences by combining attractiveness of the points of interest and distance costs based on the distances between the points of interest. As further application of voting, we consider a meeting-point scenario where a range voting rule and a minimax voting rule are used to agree on meeting points. For smaller groups, the average maximum travel time is clearly higher for range voting. For larger groups, the difference decreases. For smaller groups, the average lateness for the group using minimax voting is high, for larger groups it decreases. Hence, it makes sense for smaller groups to use the minimax voting rule if one aims at fairer distribution of travel times, and to use the range voting rule if the goal is instead to avoid delay for the group. For future work, it would be useful to adapt the simulation concept to take real-world conditions and requirements into account. Further possibilities for future work would be considering additional algorithms and models, such as considering combinatorial voting or running simulations based on the extended model, considering the role of financial incentives to encourage ridesharing or platooning and using the LightVoting tool for further research applications

    An exploration of how social science students utilise an opportunity to learn about simulation-based research methods : A design-based study

    Paper I, Paper III and Paper IV is excluded from the dissertation with respect to copyright.Paper III and Paper IV is not published yet.At the core of this thesis lies an exploration of how social science students utilise an opportunity to learn about Modeling and Simulation (M&S)-based research methods. The study is framed within the Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT). The thesis also utilises local theories such as the community of practice theory, the theory of objectification, and the theory of semiotic representation, and these are used to analyse, interpret and discuss the data generated in the study. During the analysis, boundary-crossing, boundary objects, tension and contradictions within and between activity systems were identified. Metaknowledge underpinning Modelling and Simulation (M&S) research methodology and mathematics, process and product mathematics, and epistemological analysis of simulation-based educational tools are explicated to interpret the data generated and explore students’ meanings and anchor the discussion presented in the dissertation. The study aims to understand how social science students utilise opportunities to learn about M&S-based research methods to study social dynamics. Further, to achieve the goal, the research also explores how students utilise metaknowledge while learning about M&S-based research methods. The study uses a design-based intervention approach to implement an M&S-based research methods curriculum module for students on social sciences programs. The design-based research processes were cyclic and iterative, with each component of the intervention affecting the others. This dissertation includes four independent papers (published or submitted for publication). The overall study resulted in the development of an M&S-based research methods module that was informed by and evolved throughout each intervention. My Paper 1 reports the outcome of intervention study I, which set out to explore the feasible and practical design of an M&S-based research methods module with the students of religion. Precisely, Paper 1 laid an empirical foundation of the study that made it possible to increase the intensity of the M&S-based research methods module in the following iteration with the students of Development Studies. Paper 2 reports intervention study II, which investigates how Development Studies students can gain metaknowledge about M&S-based research methods: its rationale, background knowledge, and opportunities and limitations of the research methods. Using the results of intervention studies, I and II, the next iteration, intervention study III, set out to explore how undergraduate students of religion utilise an opportunity to learn about the M&S-based research method. Paper 3 reports on formative evaluation of ‘meet-the-expert’ event, an element of the M&S-based methods curriculum module implemented through seminars and workshops. Moreover, Paper 4 deals with the pedagogical aspects of M&S-based tools and reveals how such tools can facilitate students’ evolutionary process of mathematical and social science sense-making during their interaction with the social simulation applet.publishedVersio

    EVOLUTION OF THE SUBCONTINENTAL LITHOSPHERE DURING MESOZOIC TETHYAN RIFTING: CONSTRAINTS FROM THE EXTERNAL LIGURIAN MANTLE SECTION (NORTHERN APENNINE, ITALY)

    Our study is focussed on mantle bodies from the External Ligurian ophiolites, within the Monte Gavi and Monte Sant'Agostino areas. Here, two distinct pyroxenite-bearing mantle sections were recognized, mainly based on their plagioclase-facies evolution. The Monte Gavi mantle section is nearly undeformed and records reactive melt infiltration under plagioclase-facies conditions. This process involved both peridotites (clinopyroxene-poor lherzolites) and enclosed spinel pyroxenite layers, and occurred at 0.7–0.8 GPa. In the Monte Gavi peridotites and pyroxenites, the spinel-facies clinopyroxene was replaced by Ca-rich plagioclase and new orthopyroxene, typically associated with secondary clinopyroxene. The reactive melt migration caused increase of TiO2 contents in relict clinopyroxene and spinel, with the latter also recording a Cr2O3 increase. In the Monte Gavi peridotites and pyroxenites, geothermometers based on slowly diffusing elements (REE and Y) record high temperature conditions (1200-1250 °C) related to the melt infiltration event, followed by subsolidus cooling until ca. 900°C. The Monte Sant'Agostino mantle section is characterized by widespread ductile shearing with no evidence of melt infiltration. The deformation recorded by the Monte Sant'Agostino peridotites (clinopyroxene-rich lherzolites) occurred at 750–800 °C and 0.3–0.6 GPa, leading to protomylonitic to ultramylonitic textures with extreme grain size reduction (10–50 ÎŒm). Compared to the peridotites, the enclosed pyroxenite layers gave higher temperature-pressure estimates for the plagioclase-facies re-equilibration (870–930 °C and 0.8–0.9 GPa). We propose that the earlier plagioclase crystallization in the pyroxenites enhanced strain localization and formation of mylonite shear zones in the entire mantle section. We subdivide the subcontinental mantle section from the External Ligurian ophiolites into three distinct domains, developed in response to the rifting evolution that ultimately formed a Middle Jurassic ocean-continent transition: (1) a spinel tectonite domain, characterized by subsolidus static formation of plagioclase, i.e. the Suvero mantle section (Hidas et al., 2020), (2) a plagioclase mylonite domain experiencing melt-absent deformation and (3) a nearly undeformed domain that underwent reactive melt infiltration under plagioclase-facies conditions, exemplified by the the Monte Sant'Agostino and the Monte Gavi mantle sections, respectively. We relate mantle domains (1) and (2) to a rifting-driven uplift in the late Triassic accommodated by large-scale shear zones consisting of anhydrous plagioclase mylonites.     Impact of geogenic degassing on C-isotopic composition of dissolved carbon in karst systems of Greece

    The Earth C-cycle is complex, where endogenic and exogenic sources are interconnected, operating in a multiple spatial and temporal scale (Lee et al., 2019). Non-volcanic CO2 degassing from active tectonic structures is one of the less defined components of this cycle (Frondini et al., 2019). Carbon mass-balance (Chiodini et al., 2000) is a useful tool to quantify the geogenic carbon output from regional karst hydrosystems. This approach has been demonstrated for central Italy and may be valid also for Greece, due to the similar geodynamic settings. Deep degassing in Greece has been ascertained mainly at hydrothermal and volcanic areas, but the impact of geogenic CO2 released by active tectonic areas has not yet been quantified. The main aim of this research is to investigate the possible deep degassing through the big karst aquifers of Greece. Since 2016, 156 karst springs were sampled along most of the Greek territory. To discriminate the sources of carbon, the analysis of the isotopic composition of carbon was carried out. ή13CTDIC values vary from -16.61 to -0.91‰ and can be subdivided into two groups characterized by (a) low ή13CTDIC, and (b) intermediate to high ή13CTDIC with a threshold value of -6.55‰. The composition of the first group can be related to the mixing of organic-derived CO2 and the dissolution of marine carbonates. Springs of the second group, mostly located close to Quaternary volcanic areas, are linked to possible carbon input from deep sources

    Impact of Etna’s volcanic emission on major ions and trace elements composition of the atmospheric deposition

    Mt. Etna, on the eastern coast of Sicily (Italy), is one of the most active volcanoes on the planet and it is widely recognized as a big source of volcanic gases (e.g., CO2 and SO2), halogens, and a lot of trace elements, to the atmosphere in the Mediterranean region. Especially during eruptive periods, Etna’s emissions can be dispersed over long distances and cover wide areas. A group of trace elements has been recently brought to attention for their possible environmental and human health impacts, the Technology-critical elements. The current knowledge about their geochemical cycles is still scarce, nevertheless, recent studies (Brugnone et al., 2020) evidenced a contribution from the volcanic activity for some of them (Te, Tl, and REE). In 2021, in the framework of the research project “Pianeta Dinamico”, by INGV, a network of 10 bulk collectors was implemented to collect, monthly, atmospheric deposition samples. Four of these collectors are located on the flanks of Mt. Etna, other two are in the urban area of Catania and three are in the industrial area of Priolo, all most of the time downwind of the main craters. The last one, close to CesarĂČ (Nebrodi Regional Park), represents the regional background. The research aims to produce a database on major ions and trace element compositions of the bulk deposition and here we report the values of the main physical-chemical parameters and the deposition fluxes of major ions and trace elements from the first year of research. The pH ranged from 3.1 to 7.7, with a mean value of 5.6, in samples from the Etna area, while it ranged between 5.2 and 7.6, with a mean value of 6.4, in samples from the other study areas. The EC showed values ranging from 5 to 1032 ÎŒS cm-1, with a mean value of 65 ÎŒS cm-1. The most abundant ions were Cl- and SO42- for anions, Na+ and Ca+ for cations, whose mean deposition fluxes, considering all sampling sites, were 16.6, 6.8, 8.4, and 6.0 mg m-2 d, respectively. The highest deposition fluxes of volcanic refractory elements, such as Al, Fe, and Ti, were measured in the Etna’s sites, with mean values of 948, 464, and 34.3 ÎŒg m-2 d-1, respectively, higher than those detected in the other sampling sites, further away from the volcanic source (26.2, 12.4, 0.5 ÎŒg m-2 d-1, respectively). The same trend was also observed for volatile elements of prevailing volcanic origin, such as Tl (0.49 ÎŒg m-2 d-1), Te (0.07 ÎŒg m-2 d-1), As (0.95 ÎŒg m-2 d-1), Se (1.92 ÎŒg m-2 d-1), and Cd (0.39 ÎŒg m-2 d-1). Our preliminary results show that, close to a volcanic area, volcanic emissions must be considered among the major contributors of ions and trace elements to the atmosphere.
