    Research on Brain and Mind Inspired Intelligence

    To address the problems of scientific theory, common technology and engineering application of multimedia and multimodal information computing, this paper is focused on the theoretical model, algorithm framework, and system architecture of brain and mind inspired intelligence (BMI) based on the structure mechanism simulation of the nervous system, the function architecture emulation of the cognitive system and the complex behavior imitation of the natural system. Based on information theory, system theory, cybernetics and bionics, we define related concept and hypothesis of brain and mind inspired computing (BMC) and design a model and framework for frontier BMI theory. Research shows that BMC can effectively improve the performance of semantic processing of multimedia and cross-modal information, such as target detection, classification and recognition. Based on the brain mechanism and mind architecture, a semantic-oriented multimedia neural, cognitive computing model is designed for multimedia semantic computing. Then a hierarchical cross-modal cognitive neural computing framework is proposed for cross-modal information processing. Furthermore, a cross-modal neural, cognitive computing architecture is presented for remote sensing intelligent information extraction platform and unmanned autonomous system

    A Study of Hierarchical Concatenation Networks in the Area of Pattern Recognition

    Hierarchical Concatenation Networks (HCN) are inspired by the way humans recognize patterns; i.e. by concatenating small features. In HCNs patterns are split into small parts, and then concatenated and activated in the network’s layers. The research in this thesis investigated and explored feature extraction methods, similarity measures, and classification using HCNs. Results indicate that HCNs can be used in automatic pattern recognition systems with better performance rate on the lower layer than the top layer

    Building a humanlike integrative artificial cognitive system, that is, an artificial general intelligence, is one of the goals in artificial intelligence and developmental robotics. Furthermore, a computational model that enables an artificial cognitive system to achieve cognitive development will be an excellent reference for brain and cognitive science. This paper describes the development of a cognitive architecture using probabilistic generative models (PGMs) to fully mirror the human cognitive system. The integrative model is called a whole-brain PGM (WB-PGM). It is both brain-inspired and PGMbased.     Locations in the Neocortex: A Theory of Sensorimotor Object Recognition Using Cortical Grid Cells

    The neocortex is capable of anticipating the sensory results of movement but the neural mechanisms are poorly understood. In the entorhinal cortex, grid cells represent the location of an animal in its environment, and this location is updated through movement and path integration. In this paper, we propose that sensory neocortex incorporates movement using grid cell-like neurons that represent the location of sensors on an object. We describe a two-layer neural network model that uses cortical grid cells and path integration to robustly learn and recognize objects through movement and predict sensory stimuli after movement. A layer of cells consisting of several grid cell-like modules represents a location in the reference frame of a specific object. Another layer of cells which processes sensory input receives this location input as context and uses it to encode the sensory input in the object’s reference frame. Sensory input causes the network to invoke previously learned locations that are consistent with the input, and motor input causes the network to update those locations. Simulations show that the model can learn hundreds of objects even when object features alone are insufficient for disambiguation. We discuss the relationship of the model to cortical circuitry and suggest that the reciprocal connections between layers 4 and 6 fit the requirements of the model.     Computational roles of cortico-cerebellar loops in temporal credit assignment

    Animal survival depends on behavioural adaptation to the environment. This is thought to be enabled by plasticity in the neural circuit. However, the laws which govern neural plasticity are unclear. From a functional aspect, it is desirable to correctly identify, or assign “credit” for, the neurons or synapses responsible for the task decision and subsequent performance. In the biological circuit, the intricate, non-linear interactions involved in neural networks makes appropriately assigning credit to neurons highly challenging. In the temporal domain, this is known as the temporal credit assignment (TCA) problem. This Thesis considers the role the cerebellum – a powerful subcortical structure with strong error-guided plasticity rules – as a solution to TCA in the brain. In particular, I use artificial neural networks as a means to model and understand the mechanisms by which the cerebellum can support learning in the neocortex via the cortico-cerebellar loop. I introduce two distinct but compatible computational models of cortico-cerebellar interaction. The first model asserts that the cerebellum provides the neocortex predictive feedback, modeled in the form of error gradients, with respect to its current activity. This predictive feedback enables better credit assignment in the neocortex and effectively removes the lock between feedforward and feedback processing in cortical networks. This model captures observed long-term deficits associated with cerebellar dysfunction, namely cerebellar dysmetria, in both the motor and non-motor domain. Predictions are also made with respect to alignment of cortico-cerebellar activity during learning and the optimal task conditions for cerebellar contribution. The second model also looks at the role of the cerebellum in learning, but now considers its ability to instantaneously drive the cortex towards desired task dynamics. Unlike the first model, this model does not assume any local cortical plasticity need take place at all and task-directed learning can effectively be outsourced to the cerebellum. This model captures recent optogenetic studies in mice which show the cerebellum as a necessary component for the maintenance of desired cortical dynamics and ensuing behaviour. I also show that this driving input can eventually be used as a teaching signal for the cortical circuit, thereby conceptually unifying the two models. Overall, this Thesis explores the computational role of the cerebellum and cortico-cerebellar loops for task acquisition and maintenance in the brain
