    The vehicle routing and scheduling problem has been studied with much interest within the last four decades. In this paper, some of the existing literature dealing with routing and scheduling problems with environmental issues is reviewed, and a description is provided of the problems that have been investigated and how they are treated using combinatorial optimization tools

    Route Planning in Transportation Networks

    We survey recent advances in algorithms for route planning in transportation networks. For road networks, we show that one can compute driving directions in milliseconds or less even at continental scale. A variety of techniques provide different trade-offs between preprocessing effort, space requirements, and query time. Some algorithms can answer queries in a fraction of a microsecond, while others can deal efficiently with real-time traffic. Journey planning on public transportation systems, although conceptually similar, is a significantly harder problem due to its inherent time-dependent and multicriteria nature. Although exact algorithms are fast enough for interactive queries on metropolitan transit systems, dealing with continent-sized instances requires simplifications or heavy preprocessing. The multimodal route planning problem, which seeks journeys combining schedule-based transportation (buses, trains) with unrestricted modes (walking, driving), is even harder, relying on approximate solutions even for metropolitan inputs.Comment: This is an updated version of the technical report MSR-TR-2014-4, previously published by Microsoft Research.     Analysis of FPTASes for the Multi-Objective Shortest Path Problem

    We propose a new FPTAS for the multi-objective shortest path problem. The algorithm uses elements from both an exact labeling algorithm and an FPTAS proposed by Tsaggouris and Zaroliagis (2009). We analyze the running times of these three algorithms both from a the- oretical and a computational point of view. Theoretically, we show that there are instances for which the new FPTAS runs an arbitrary times faster than the other two algorithms. Fur- thermore, for the bi-objective case, the number of approximate solutions generated by the proposed FPTAS is at most the number of Pareto-optimal solutions multiplied by the number of nodes.     Resource constrained shortest paths and extensions

    In this thesis, we use integer programming techniques to solve the resource constrained shortest path problem (RCSPP) which seeks a minimum cost path between two nodes in a directed graph subject to a finite set of resource constraints. Although NP-hard, the RCSPP is extremely useful in practice and often appears as a subproblem in many decomposition schemes for difficult optimization problems. We begin with a study of the RCSPP polytope for the single resource case and obtain several new valid inequality classes. Separation routines are provided, along with a polynomial time algorithm for constructing an auxiliary conflict graph which can be used to separate well known valid inequalities for the node packing polytope. We establish some facet defining conditions when the underlying graph is acyclic and develop a polynomial time sequential lifting algorithm which can be used to strengthen one of the inequality classes. Next, we outline a branch-and-cut algorithm for the RCSPP. We present preprocessing techniques and branching schemes which lead to strengthened linear programming relaxations and balanced search trees, and the majority of the new inequality classes are generalized to consider multiple resources. We describe a primal heuristic scheme that uses fractional solutions, along with the current incumbent, to search for new feasible solutions throughout the branch-and-bound tree. A computational study is conducted to evaluate several implementation choices, and the results demonstrate that our algorithm outperforms the default branch-and-cut algorithm of a leading integer programming software package. Finally, we consider the dial-a-flight problem (DAFP), a new vehicle routing problem that arises in the context of on-demand air transportation and is concerned with the scheduling of a set of travel requests for a single day of operations. The DAFP can be formulated as an integer multicommodity network flow model consisting of several RCSPPs linked together by set partitioning constraints which guarantee that all travel requests are satisfied. Therefore, we extend our branch-and-cut algorithm for the RCSPP to solve the DAFP. Computational experiments with practical instances provided by the DayJet Corporation verify that the extended algorithm also outperforms the default branch-and-cut algorithm of a leading integer programming software package.Ph.D.Committee Co-Chair: George L.     GIS and Network Analysis

    Both geographic information systems (GIS) and network analysis are burgeoning fields, characterised by rapid methodological and scientific advances in recent years. A geographic information system (GIS) is a digital computer application designed for the capture, storage, manipulation, analysis and display of geographic information. Geographic location is the element that distinguishes geographic information from all other types of information. Without location, data are termed to be non-spatial and would have little value within a GIS. Location is, thus, the basis for many benefits of GIS: the ability to map, the ability to measure distances and the ability to tie different kinds of information together because they refer to the same place (Longley et al., 2001). GIS-T, the application of geographic information science and systems to transportation problems, represents one of the most important application areas of GIS-technology today. While traditional GIS formulation's strengths are in mapping display and geodata processing, GIS-T requires new data structures to represent the complexities of transportation networks and to perform different network algorithms in order to fulfil its potential in the field of logistics and distribution logistics. This paper addresses these issues as follows. The section that follows discusses data models and design issues which are specifically oriented to GIS-T, and identifies several improvements of the traditional network data model that are needed to support advanced network analysis in a ground transportation context. These improvements include turn-tables, dynamic segmentation, linear referencing, traffic lines and non-planar networks. Most commercial GIS software vendors have extended their basic GIS data model during the past two decades to incorporate these innovations (Goodchild, 1998). The third section shifts attention to network routing problems that have become prominent in GIS-T: the travelling salesman problem, the vehicle routing problem and the shortest path problem with time windows, a problem that occurs as a subproblem in many time constrained routing and scheduling issues of practical importance. Such problems are conceptually simple, but mathematically complex and challenging. The focus is on theory and algorithms for solving these problems. The paper concludes with some final remarks.

    The Quadratic Shortest Path Problem:Complexity, Approximability, and Solution Methods

    We consider the problem of finding a shortest path in a directed graph with a quadratic objective function (the QSPP). We show that the QSPP cannot be approximated unless P=NP . For the case of a convex objective function, an n-approximation algorithm is presented, where n is the number of nodes in the graph, and APX-hardness is shown. Furthermore, we prove that even if only adjacent arcs play a part in the quadratic objective function, the problem still cannot be approximated unless P=NP. In order to solve the problem we first propose a mixed integer programming formulation, and then devise an efficient exact Branch-and-Bound algorithm for the general QSPP, where lower bounds are computed by considering a reformulation scheme that is solvable through a number of minimum cost flow problems. In our computational experiments we solve to optimality different classes of instances with up to 1000 nodes

    Towards the fast and robust optimal design of Wireless Body Area Networks

    Wireless body area networks are wireless sensor networks whose adoption has recently emerged and spread in important healthcare applications, such as the remote monitoring of health conditions of patients. A major issue associated with the deployment of such networks is represented by energy consumption: in general, the batteries of the sensors cannot be easily replaced and recharged, so containing the usage of energy by a rational design of the network and of the routing is crucial. Another issue is represented by traffic uncertainty: body sensors may produce data at a variable rate that is not exactly known in advance, for example because the generation of data is event-driven. Neglecting traffic uncertainty may lead to wrong design and routing decisions, which may compromise the functionality of the network and have very bad effects on the health of the patients. In order to address these issues, in this work we propose the first robust optimization model for jointly optimizing the topology and the routing in body area networks under traffic uncertainty. Since the problem may result challenging even for a state-of-the-art optimization solver, we propose an original optimization algorithm that exploits suitable linear relaxations to guide a randomized fixing of the variables, supported by an exact large variable neighborhood search. Experiments on realistic instances indicate that our algorithm performs better than a state-of-the-art solver, fast producing solutions associated with improved optimality gaps.Comment: Authors' manuscript version of the paper that was published in Applied Soft Computin
