A Taxonomy of Workflow Management Systems for Grid Computing
With the advent of Grid and application technologies, scientists and
engineers are building more and more complex applications to manage and process
large data sets, and execute scientific experiments on distributed resources.
Such application scenarios require means for composing and executing complex
workflows. Therefore, many efforts have been made towards the development of
workflow management systems for Grid computing. In this paper, we propose a
taxonomy that characterizes and classifies various approaches for building and
executing workflows on Grids. We also survey several representative Grid
workflow systems developed by various projects world-wide to demonstrate the
comprehensiveness of the taxonomy. The taxonomy not only highlights the design
and engineering similarities and differences of state-of-the-art in Grid
workflow systems, but also identifies the areas that need further research.Comment: 29 pages, 15 figure
A hybrid ant algorithm for scheduling independent jobs in heterogeneous computing environments
The efficient scheduling of independent computational jobs in a heterogeneous computing (HC) environment is an important problem in domains such as grid computing. Finding optimal schedules for such an environment is (in general) an NP-hard problem, and so heuristic approaches must be used. In this paper we describe an ant colony optimisation (ACO) algorithm that, when combined with local and tabu search, can find shorter schedules on benchmark problems than other techniques found in the literature
A hyper-heuristic for adaptive scheduling in computational grids
In this paper we present the design and implementation of an hyper-heuristic for efficiently scheduling independent jobs in computational grids. An efficient scheduling of jobs to grid resources depends on many parameters, among others, the characteristics of the resources and jobs (such as computing capacity, consistency of computing, workload, etc.). Moreover, these characteristics change over time due to the dynamic nature of grid environment, therefore the planning of jobs to resources should be adaptively done. Existing ad hoc scheduling methods (batch and immediate mode) have shown their efficacy for certain types of resource and job characteristics. However, as stand alone methods, they are not able to produce the best planning of jobs to resources for different types of Grid resources and job characteristics. In this work we have designed and implemented a hyper-heuristic that uses a set of ad hoc (immediate and batch mode) scheduling methods to provide the scheduling of jobs to Grid resources according to the Grid and job characteristics. The hyper-heuristic is a high level algorithm, which examines the state and characteristics of the Grid system (jobs and resources), and selects and applies the ad hoc method that yields the best planning of jobs. The resulting hyper-heuristic based scheduler can be thus used to develop network-aware applications that need efficient planning of jobs to resources. The hyper-heuristic has been tested and evaluated in a dynamic setting through a prototype of a Grid simulator. The experimental evaluation showed the usefulness of the hyper-heuristic for planning of jobs to resources as compared to planning without knowledge of the resource and job characteristics.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
A survey of QoS-aware web service composition techniques
Web service composition can be briefly described as the process of aggregating services with disparate functionalities into a new composite service in order to meet increasingly complex needs of users. Service composition process has been accurate on dealing with services having disparate functionalities, however, over the years the number of web services in particular that exhibit similar functionalities and varying Quality of Service (QoS) has significantly increased. As such, the problem becomes how to select appropriate web services such that the QoS of the resulting composite service is maximized or, in some cases, minimized. This constitutes an NP-hard problem as it is complicated and difficult to solve. In this paper, a discussion of concepts of web service composition and a holistic review of current service composition techniques proposed in literature is presented. Our review spans several publications in the field that can serve as a road map for future research
An efficient genetic algorithm for large-scale planning of robust industrial wireless networks
An industrial indoor environment is harsh for wireless communications
compared to an office environment, because the prevalent metal easily causes
shadowing effects and affects the availability of an industrial wireless local
area network (IWLAN). On the one hand, it is costly, time-consuming, and
ineffective to perform trial-and-error manual deployment of wireless nodes. On
the other hand, the existing wireless planning tools only focus on office
environments such that it is hard to plan IWLANs due to the larger problem size
and the deployed IWLANs are vulnerable to prevalent shadowing effects in harsh
industrial indoor environments. To fill this gap, this paper proposes an
overdimensioning model and a genetic algorithm based over-dimensioning (GAOD)
algorithm for deploying large-scale robust IWLANs. As a progress beyond the
state-of-the-art wireless planning, two full coverage layers are created. The
second coverage layer serves as redundancy in case of shadowing. Meanwhile, the
deployment cost is reduced by minimizing the number of access points (APs); the
hard constraint of minimal inter-AP spatial paration avoids multiple APs
covering the same area to be simultaneously shadowed by the same obstacle. The
computation time and occupied memory are dedicatedly considered in the design
of GAOD for large-scale optimization. A greedy heuristic based
over-dimensioning (GHOD) algorithm and a random OD algorithm are taken as
benchmarks. In two vehicle manufacturers with a small and large indoor
environment, GAOD outperformed GHOD with up to 20% less APs, while GHOD
outputted up to 25% less APs than a random OD algorithm. Furthermore, the
effectiveness of this model and GAOD was experimentally validated with a real
deployment system
Deep Neuroevolution of Recurrent and Discrete World Models
Neural architectures inspired by our own human cognitive system, such as the
recently introduced world models, have been shown to outperform traditional
deep reinforcement learning (RL) methods in a variety of different domains.
Instead of the relatively simple architectures employed in most RL experiments,
world models rely on multiple different neural components that are responsible
for visual information processing, memory, and decision-making. However, so far
the components of these models have to be trained separately and through a
variety of specialized training methods. This paper demonstrates the surprising
finding that models with the same precise parts can be instead efficiently
trained end-to-end through a genetic algorithm (GA), reaching a comparable
performance to the original world model by solving a challenging car racing
task. An analysis of the evolved visual and memory system indicates that they
include a similar effective representation to the system trained through
gradient descent. Additionally, in contrast to gradient descent methods that
struggle with discrete variables, GAs also work directly with such
representations, opening up opportunities for classical planning in latent
space. This paper adds additional evidence on the effectiveness of deep
neuroevolution for tasks that require the intricate orchestration of multiple
components in complex heterogeneous architectures
