    Online Map Vectorization for Autonomous Driving: A Rasterization Perspective

    Vectorized high-definition (HD) map is essential for autonomous driving, providing detailed and precise environmental information for advanced perception and planning. However, current map vectorization methods often exhibit deviations, and the existing evaluation metric for map vectorization lacks sufficient sensitivity to detect these deviations. To address these limitations, we propose integrating the philosophy of rasterization into map vectorization. Specifically, we introduce a new rasterization-based evaluation metric, which has superior sensitivity and is better suited to real-world autonomous driving scenarios. Furthermore, we propose MapVR (Map Vectorization via Rasterization), a novel framework that applies differentiable rasterization to vectorized outputs and then performs precise and geometry-aware supervision on rasterized HD maps. Notably, MapVR designs tailored rasterization strategies for various geometric shapes, enabling effective adaptation to a wide range of map elements. Experiments show that incorporating rasterization into map vectorization greatly enhances performance with no extra computational cost during inference, leading to more accurate map perception and ultimately promoting safer autonomous driving.Comment: [NeurIPS 2023

    Adaptive Methods for Point Cloud and Mesh Processing

    Point clouds and 3D meshes are widely used in numerous applications ranging from games to virtual reality to autonomous vehicles. This dissertation proposes several approaches for noise removal and calibration of noisy point cloud data and 3D mesh sharpening methods. Order statistic filters have been proven to be very successful in image processing and other domains as well. Different variations of order statistics filters originally proposed for image processing are extended to point cloud filtering in this dissertation. A brand-new adaptive vector median is proposed in this dissertation for removing noise and outliers from noisy point cloud data. The major contributions of this research lie in four aspects: 1) Four order statistic algorithms are extended, and one adaptive filtering method is proposed for the noisy point cloud with improved results such as preserving significant features. These methods are applied to standard models as well as synthetic models, and real scenes, 2) A hardware acceleration of the proposed method using Microsoft parallel pattern library for filtering point clouds is implemented using multicore processors, 3) A new method for aerial LIDAR data filtering is proposed. The objective is to develop a method to enable automatic extraction of ground points from aerial LIDAR data with minimal human intervention, and 4) A novel method for mesh color sharpening using the discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator is proposed. Median and order statistics-based filters are widely used in signal processing and image processing because they can easily remove outlier noise and preserve important features. This dissertation demonstrates a wide range of results with median filter, vector median filter, fuzzy vector median filter, adaptive mean, adaptive median, and adaptive vector median filter on point cloud data. The experiments show that large-scale noise is removed while preserving important features of the point cloud with reasonable computation time. Quantitative criteria (e.g., complexity, Hausdorff distance, and the root mean squared error (RMSE)), as well as qualitative criteria (e.g., the perceived visual quality of the processed point cloud), are employed to assess the performance of the filters in various cases corrupted by different noisy models. The adaptive vector median is further optimized for denoising or ground filtering aerial LIDAR data point cloud. The adaptive vector median is also accelerated on multi-core CPUs using Microsoft Parallel Patterns Library. In addition, this dissertation presents a new method for mesh color sharpening using the discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator, which is an approximation of second order derivatives on irregular 3D meshes. The one-ring neighborhood is utilized to compute the Laplace-Beltrami operator. The color for each vertex is updated by adding the Laplace-Beltrami operator of the vertex color weighted by a factor to its original value. Different discretizations of the Laplace-Beltrami operator have been proposed for geometrical processing of 3D meshes. This work utilizes several discretizations of the Laplace-Beltrami operator for sharpening 3D mesh colors and compares their performance.     Emergence of Intelligent Navigation Behavior in Embodied Agents from Massive-Scale Simulation

    The goal of Artificial Intelligence is to build ‘thinking machines’ that ‘use language, form abstractions and concepts, solve kinds of problems now reserved for humans, and improve themselves.’ In this dissertation, we will argue that the intelligence required for this goal emerges from massive-scale simulation. We will show a specific case: that intel- ligent navigation behavior emerges from massive-scale simulation and deep reinforcement learning. Towards this end, we introduce Decentralized Distributed PPO (DD-PPO), a method that scales reinforcement learning to multiple GPUs and machines. We use DD-PPO to train agents for PointGoal navigation (e.g. ‘Go 5 meters north and 10 meters east relative to start’) for the equivalent of 80 years of human experience. This massive-scale training results in near-perfect autonomous navigation in an unseen environment without access to a map. We then examine the inner workings of special case of PointGoalNav agents. We find that (1) their memory enables shortcuts, i.e. efficiently travel through previously unexplored parts of the environment; (2) there is emergence of maps in their memory, i.e. a detailed occupancy grid of the environment can be decoded from it. We then introduce Variable Experience Rollout (VER), a method that efficiently scales reinforcement learning on a single GPU or machine. We use VER to train chained skills for mobile manipulation. We find a surprising emergence of navigation in skills that do not ostensibly require any navigation. Specifically, the pick skill involves a robot picking an object from a table. During training, the robot was always spawned close to the table and never needs to navigate. However, we find that if navigation actions are part of the action space, the robot learns to navigate then pick an object in new environments with 50% success, demonstrating surprisingly high out-of-distribution generalization.Ph.D

    Deep Structured Layers for Instance-Level Optimization in 2D and 3D Vision

    The approach we present in this thesis is that of integrating optimization problems as layers in deep neural networks. Optimization-based modeling provides an additional set of tools enabling the design of powerful neural networks for a wide battery of computer vision tasks. This thesis shows formulations and experiments for vision tasks ranging from image reconstruction to 3D reconstruction. We first propose an unrolled optimization method with implicit regularization properties for reconstructing images from noisy camera readings. The method resembles an unrolled majorization minimization framework with convolutional neural networks acting as regularizers. We report state-of-the-art performance in image reconstruction on both noisy and noise-free evaluation setups across many datasets. We further focus on the task of monocular 3D reconstruction of articulated objects using video self-supervision. The proposed method uses a structured layer for accurate object deformation that controls a 3D surface by displacing a small number of learnable handles. While relying on a small set of training data per category for self-supervision, the method obtains state-of-the-art reconstruction accuracy with diverse shapes and viewpoints for multiple articulated objects. We finally address the shortcomings of the previous method that revolve around regressing the camera pose using multiple hypotheses. We propose a method that recovers a 3D shape from a 2D image by relying solely on 3D-2D correspondences regressed from a convolutional neural network. These correspondences are used in conjunction with an optimization problem to estimate per sample the camera pose and deformation. We quantitatively show the effectiveness of the proposed method on self-supervised 3D reconstruction on multiple categories without the need for multiple hypotheses

    Precise and Automated Tomographic Reconstruction with a Limited Number of Projections

    This thesis proposed a parameter-optimized iterative reconstruction method (optimized-CGTV) for tomographic reconstruction with limited projections subject to the minimization of the total variation (TV). The reconstruction problem is solved with a parameter optimization applying a discrete L-curve. The optimized-CGTV reconstruction method is incorporated into an automatic framework of parallel 3D reconstruction on a computer cluster to achieve a rapid reconstruction process

    Belle II Technical Design Report

    The Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider has collected almost 1 billion Y(4S) events in its decade of operation. Super-KEKB, an upgrade of KEKB is under construction, to increase the luminosity by two orders of magnitude during a three-year shutdown, with an ultimate goal of 8E35 /cm^2 /s luminosity. To exploit the increased luminosity, an upgrade of the Belle detector has been proposed. A new international collaboration Belle-II, is being formed.     Contours and contrast

    Contrast in photographic and computer-generated imagery communicates colour and lightness differences that would be perceived when viewing the represented scene. Due to depiction constraints, the amount of displayable contrast is limited, reducing the image's ability to accurately represent the scene. A local contrast enhancement technique called unsharp masking can overcome these constraints by adding high-frequency contours to an image that increase its apparent contrast. In three novel algorithms inspired by unsharp masking, specialized local contrast enhancements are shown to overcome constraints of a limited dynamic range, overcome an achromatic palette, and to improve the rendering of 3D shapes and scenes. The Beyond Tone Mapping approach restores original HDR contrast to its tone mapped LDR counterpart by adding highfrequency colour contours to the LDR image while preserving its luminance. Apparent Greyscale is a multi-scale two-step technique that first converts colour images and video to greyscale according to their chromatic lightness, then restores diminished colour contrast with high-frequency luminance contours. Finally, 3D Unsharp Masking performs scene coherent enhancement by introducing 3D high-frequency luminance contours to emphasize the details, shapes, tonal range and spatial organization of a 3D scene within the rendering pipeline. As a perceptual justification, it is argued that a local contrast enhancement made with unsharp masking is related to the Cornsweet illusion, and that this may explain its effect on apparent contrast.Seit vielen Jahren ist die realistische Erzeugung von virtuellen Charakteren ein zentraler Teil der Computergraphikforschung. Dennoch blieben bisher einige Probleme ungelöst. Dazu zählt unter anderem die Erzeugung von Charakteranimationen, welche unter der Benutzung der traditionellen, skelettbasierten Ansätze immer noch zeitaufwändig sind. Eine weitere Herausforderung stellt auch die passive Erfassung von Schauspielern in alltäglicher Kleidung dar. Darüber hinaus existieren im Gegensatz zu den zahlreichen skelettbasierten Ansätzen nur wenige Methoden zur Verarbeitung und Veränderung von Netzanimationen. In dieser Arbeit präsentieren wir Algorithmen zur Lösung jeder dieser Aufgaben. Unser erster Ansatz besteht aus zwei Netz-basierten Verfahren zur Vereinfachung von Charakteranimationen. Obwohl das kinematische Skelett beiseite gelegt wird, können beide Verfahren direkt in die traditionelle Pipeline integriert werden, wobei die Erstellung von Animationen mit wirklichkeitsgetreuen Körperverformungen ermöglicht wird. Im Anschluss präsentieren wir drei passive Aufnahmemethoden für Körperbewegung und Schauspiel, die ein deformierbares 3D-Modell zur Repräsentation der Szene benutzen. Diese Methoden können zur gemeinsamen Rekonstruktion von zeit- und raummässig kohärenter Geometrie, Bewegung und Oberflächentexturen benutzt werden, die auch zeitlich veränderlich sein dürfen. Aufnahmen von lockerer und alltäglicher Kleidung sind dabei problemlos möglich. Darüber hinaus ermöglichen die qualitativ hochwertigen Rekonstruktionen die realistische Darstellung von 3D Video-Sequenzen. Schließlich werden zwei neuartige Algorithmen zur Verarbeitung von Netz-Animationen beschrieben. Während der erste Algorithmus die vollautomatische Umwandlung von Netz-Animationen in skelettbasierte Animationen ermöglicht, erlaubt der zweite die automatische Konvertierung von Netz-Animationen in so genannte Animations-Collagen, einem neuen Kunst-Stil zur Animationsdarstellung. Die in dieser Dissertation beschriebenen Methoden können als Lösungen spezieller Probleme, aber auch als wichtige Bausteine größerer Anwendungen betrachtet werden. Zusammengenommen bilden sie ein leistungsfähiges System zur akkuraten Erfassung, zur Manipulation und zum realistischen Rendern von künstlerischen Aufführungen, dessen Fähigkeiten über diejenigen vieler verwandter Capture-Techniken hinausgehen. Auf diese Weise können wir die Bewegung, die im Zeitverlauf variierenden Details und die Textur-Informationen eines Schauspielers erfassen und sie in eine mit vollständiger Information versehene Charakter-Animation umwandeln, die unmittelbar weiterverwendet werden kann, sich aber auch zur realistischen Darstellung des Schauspielers aus beliebigen Blickrichtungen eignet
