    Factors affecting the adoption of online auctions by internet users in Hong Kong

    This is an exploratory empirical study with the aim to identify the factors that affect the adoption of online auctions by Internet users in Hong Kong. The frameworks used were the TAM (Technology Acceptance Model), TCE (Transaction Cost Economics) and SERVQUAL (Service Quality). It was found that the dimensions that affected the customer’s perceived value of the online auction are benefits, costs, risks and service quality. Data was collected from four pilot focus groups, one online survey and a final focus group. The subjects in the focus groups were 21 undergraduates, whereas the subjects in the online survey were 152 internet users. The results of the pilot focus groups guided the design of the online survey. The results of the survey was analysed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The final focus group was used to seek explanations to some issues arose from the online survey. It was found that the factors in the benefit dimension were liquidity, enjoyment, and price transparency. The factors in the cost dimension were time, effort, service charge and reputation of the user. The factor in the risk dimension was financial risk. The factors in the service quality dimension were efficiency and system availability. The final focus group revealed that the auctioneer’s role in policing the auction web site was important. For differences among the subjects, it was also found that the adult users consider their reputation in auction website, young adults are worried about financial risks, and female users are more concerned about financial risks than male users. The implications of these differences are discussed.     Technology and social activism: an empirical study of the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) by Indian single-issue groups

    This thesis explores the role of new Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) in political organisation. It explores the use of ICTs by singleissue groups – the emergence of which has become a salient feature of contemporary political activity. There has been considerable interest amongst politicians, activists, commentators and social scientists in the contribution of ICT (eg. social media) to democracy and the renewal of political life. Optimistic accounts are especially evident around ‘the Arab Spring', though subsequent experiences have called into question the prevalent technological utopianism of the time. Despite this, we are now building a complete picture of how ICT can contribute to the political organisation. In particular, the significance of new media and technology for single issue groups has not yet been explored in developing countries context. This thesis, therefore, examines the characteristics of single issue groups and how social activists appropriated new media tools and its consequences for political organisation in a developing country: India. A qualitative study was undertaken to focus on two detailed case studies: India Against Corruption (IAC) and the Pink Chaddi campaign. IAC was the traditional activist organisation that used new media to its advantage whereas Pink Chaddi was the pioneering example of online social activism in the India. Forty-three semi-structured interviews were conducted with a range of actors involved to understand how single-issue groups appropriated technology and how new practices have emerge from this appropriation. Drawing upon the Social Shaping of Technology perspective (Williams & Edge, 1996) and its extension to Social Learning (SĂžrensen, 1996), the thesis refutes prevalent deterministic accounts (whether utopian or dystopian) of the impact of new technologies on political organisations. Instead, a detailed account is rendered of the adoption of various communication media and their utilisation in the particular practices and activities of the single-issue groups selected. The results demonstrate that the particular setting shapes the appropriation of new media and the development of new organisation practices: the skills resources and strategies of the local players involved as well as the availability and affordances of technology. The thesis introduces the concept of ‘creative configuration' – to capture the innovative and adaptive process by which the actors involved explored the applicability of general purpose technology infrastructure and tools, assisted by forms of local expertise available to hand, to support organisational objectives. The research examines the applicability of the theory of temporary organisation (Lundin & Söderholm, 1995) to the activities of single-issue groups. It suggests an extension of this theory, highlighting how ‘technology' acts as a catalyst to sustain temporary organisations such as single-issue groups. Further, a framework for sustainable local innovations is proposed to explore lessons for organisations in exploiting technologies sustainably and more efficiently

    The Relationship Between Technology Adoption Determinants and the Intention to Use Software-Defined Networking

    AbstractThe advent of distributed cloud computing and the exponential growth and demands of the internet of things and big data have strained traditional network technologies\u27 capabilities and have given rise to software-defined networking\u27s (SDN\u27s) revolutionary approach. Some information technology (IT) cloud services leaders who do not intend to adopt SDN technology may be unable to meet increasing performance and flexibility demands and may risk financial loss compared to those who adopt SDN technology. Grounded in the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT), the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between IT cloud system integrators\u27 perceptions of performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, and their intention to use SDN technology. The participants (n = 167) were cloud system integrators who were at least 18 years old with a minimum of three months\u27 experience and used SDN technology in the United States. Data were collected using the UTAUT authors\u27 validated survey instrument. The multiple regression findings were significant, F(4, 162) = 40.44, p \u3c .001, R2 = .50. In the final model, social influence (ß = .236, t = 2.662, p \u3c .01) and facilitating conditions (ß = .327, t = 5.018, p \u3c .001) were statistically significant; performance expectancy and effort expectancy were not statistically significant. A recommendation is for IT managers to champion SDN adoption by ensuring the availability of support resources and promoting its use in the organization\u27s goals. The implications for positive social change include the potential to enhance cloud security, quality of experience, and improved reliability, strengthening safety control systems

    Stakeholders' reactions toward iodine biofortified foods : an application of protection motivation theory and technology acceptance model

    This doctoral dissertation investigates stakeholders’ reactions toward iodine biofortified foods. Iodine deficiency alone affects over 2 billion people worldwide, and is particularly prevalent in developing countries. Iodine is an essential trace element found in seafood and iodized salt, as well as certain vegetables and is important for growth and development throughout the body, as well as cognitive development. Given the critical role of iodine in human nutrition, various strategies have been implemented to reduce iodine deficiency and Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD). However, despite considerable progress through iodine fortification, the goal is still far from being achieved. Therefore, there is a need to explore the potential of new approaches, such as iodine biofortification. Biofortification is a strategy to enhance micronutrient concentrations in staple crops, either through conventional or transgenic breeding techniques. Given its status as an agriculture-based, micronutrient strategy, a thorough insight into stakeholder reactions is necessary, examining stakeholders from both the demand-side (consumers) and the supply-side (farmers). A conceptual framework bringing together behavioural change models, technology acceptance modelling and an economic valuation technique was developed and tested for use in stakeholder analysis. Six distinct studies were conducted, targeting locations drawn from three East African countries: Kenya; Uganda; and Tanzania, which have high levels of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) as well as retarded mental and neurological development coupled with poor school performance. These locations meet the criteria for iodine deficiency endemic areas with a large at risk population that seldom benefits from the existing intervention programs. All model constructs in the framework are decisive in determining the uptake of iodine biofortification. Consistent with evaluation of food with nutritional benefits, stakeholders on both the demand (parents and school heads) and supply-side (small-scale farmers) had favourable reactions towards iodine biofortified food, the uptake of which could drastically change the trend in iodine intake in iodine deficiency endemic areas. These findings present a niche opportunity for producers to tap into the demand market created. In principle, the findings could shape the policy terrain for addressing iodine deficiency, as well as ameliorating the nutrition intervention campaign through agricultural-based interventions, such as biofortification

    Decision-making and the role of feedback in complex tasks

    This thesis investigates the process of decision-making in relation to complex tasks and considers the important role which dynamic information and real-time feedback play in shaping response behaviour and adaptation within such environments. Through empirical studies, the thesis explores the extent to which decision-makers can be said to act rationally when challenged by complex decision-making environments. Evidence relating to demand for information and the impact of feedback on behaviour is provided with two studies: The first uses a simulated auction platform to examine behaviour within overlapping auctions of short duration with close-to-identical items and minimal participation costs. Mouse tracking is used to capture data on relevant interactions of participants with the simulated online platform, including switching behaviour independent of bidding. The resulting data suggests that participants did behave in a manner consistent with utility maximisation, seeking to acquire the item at the lowest possible price and showing no bias in terms of auction preference. The impact of fixed-price offers in the form of a “Buy it Now” option is also examined with some evidence that participants again seek, and respond to, current information when deciding on their bidding strategy. The second study is a test of the impact of real-time feedback and demand for information within the context of financial markets. The study again uses a novel simulated environment which provides access to considerable amounts of relevant data which participants can choose to access. In addition, participants are exposed to regular feedback with regard to their own performance. Overall, demand for information is found to be dependent upon the type of feedback received and its context. Decision-makers then appear to behave objectively, apparently seeking the latest available information to support current decisions, although investor style is found to be important in determining overall trading propensity. The thesis starts by considering a number of the foundations and pathways which run through the judgment and decision-making literature. It is not a complete description, review or analysis of all of the prevailing lines of enquiry. Nevertheless, it seeks to achieve coherence in terms of bringing together some of the key themes dealing with risky choice under conditions of uncertainty and ambiguity. The field of judgment and decision-making is inevitably vast; its scope owing much to the fact that it transcends individual disciplines. The emergent behavioural sciences thus draw together important strands from various sources, notably Economics and Finance. In many areas, psychological traits can be applied to explain inconsistencies which are found in classical theory of rational behaviour. The recognition of behavioural traits has thus contributed greatly to the evolution of decisionmaking theories under conditions of uncertainty and ambiguity which are, in many cases, substantially more adaptable and robust than early normative theories of rational behaviour. The classical approach to rational decision making within Economics, together with some theoretical and empirical challenges to it, are considered in Chapter 1. It is here that we are introduced to the Rational Man. Like the mythical creatures found in Classical Antiquity, the Rational Man does not actually exist in the real world; he is nevertheless central to the concept of utility maximising rational choice which provided much of the foundation of Economics. Developments of expected utility theory (EUT) are considered, including its replacement of expected value, and the formalisation of rational behaviour within the context of axioms. When those logical axioms apply, decision-makers can be said to behave 'as if' they are utility maximises. The chapter ends with some empirical evidence, showing the types of approaches often used to explore rational decision-making. Some violations of EUT are explored, both in relation to notional gambles and consistency with regard to revealed preferences. Chapter 2 extends the narrative by considering rational decision-making in cases where there is no objective information about possible outcomes. Subjective utility theory (SEU) is then introduced, describing objective functions based upon preferences derived from combined utility and probability functions. The implications of the Allais’ and Ellsberg paradoxes are discussed, along with some possible solutions. It is here that we explore the concepts of uncertainty and ambiguity in more details and consider some theoretical formulations for addressing them. Chapter 3 covers the significant contribution to decision-making under conditions of uncertainty provided by Prospect Theory and, later, Cumulative Prospect Theory (CPT). Their evolution from the pioneering work of Markowitz is discussed within the context of reference points relative to which outcomes can be evaluated. The significance of stochastic dominance and rank dependence are explored. By this stage, we have examined numerous theories which have fundamentally transformed standard EUT into much more flexible and adaptable frameworks of rational choice. The core concepts of utility maximisation remain yet the initial, strictly concave utility function describing diminishing marginal utility is now substantially replaced by more complex weighted preference functions. From this theoretical base, the process of choice reduction and the application of heuristics in decision-making are considered. We again describe axiomatic behaviour compatible with rational choice. Therefore, decision-makers faced with multiple choices about which there may be little or no objective information about likely outcomes can nevertheless develop rational beliefs and expectations which can then be applied to reduce complex tasks to more manageable proportions. As well as considering these aspects from the point of view of actual choices, we also consider the processes by which decisions are taken. Thus, process tracing methods are introduced into the discussion. The chapter also explicitly considers the role of feedback in decision making. This includes a consideration of Bayesian inference as a process for updating probabilistic expectations subject to new information. From considering theoretical formulations form which we can judge rational behaviour, Chapter 5 looks at evidence for sub-optimal decision-making and bias. Bias with regard to probability assessments are considered along with empirical evidence of bias in relation to intertemporal discounting. Sunk cost bias is also considered as a clear example of irrational behaviour, leading in to a specific discussion about a number of persistent behavioural biases identified within financial markets. As an introduction to later chapters, this also covers the basic theoretical principles of market efficiency and evidence that real markets fail to adhere to those principles in important ways. Chapters 6 and 8 describe the empirical studies with Chapter 7 providing a more detailed introduction to the financial markets experiment, considering aspects of market efficiency, models of behaviour and other empirical evidence
