A Practical Approach to the Development of Ontology-Based Information Fusion Systems
Proceedings of: NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Prediction and Recognition of Piracy Efforts Using Collaborative Human-Centric Information Systems, Salamanca, 19-30 September, 2011Ontology-based representations are gaining momentum among other alternatives to implement the knowledge model of high-level fusion applications. In this paper, we provide an introduction to the theoretical foundations of ontology-based knowledge representation and reasoning, with a particular focus on the issues that appear in maritime security âwhere heterogeneous regulations, information sources, users, and systems
are involved. We also present some current approaches and existing technologies for high-level fusion based on ontological representations. Unfortunately, current tools for the practical implementation of ontology-based systems are not fully standardized, or even prepared to work together in medium-scale systems. Accordingly, we discuss different alternatives to face problems such as spatial and temporal knowledge representation
or uncertainty management. To illustrate the conclusions drawn from this research, an ontology-based semantic tracking system is briefly presented. Results and latent capabilities of this framework are shown at the end of the paper, where we also envision future opportunities for this kind of applications. This research activity is supported in part by Projects CICYT TIN2008-06742-C02-02/TSI, CICYT TEC2008-06732-C02-02/TEC, CAM CONTEXTS (S2009/TIC-1485) and DPS 2008-07029-C02-02.Publicad

Facilitating file retrieval on resource limited devices
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. The rapid development of mobile technologies has facilitated users to generate and store files on mobile devices. However, it has become a challenging issue for users to search efficiently and effectively for files of interest in a mobile environment that involves a large number of mobile nodes. In this thesis, file management and retrieval alternatives have been investigated to propose a feasible framework that can be employed on resource-limited devices without altering their operating systems. The file annotation and retrieval framework (FARM) proposed in the thesis automatically annotates the files with their basic file attributes by extracting them from the underlying operating system of the device. The framework is implemented in the JME platform as a case study. This framework provides a variety of features for managing the metadata and file search features on the device itself and on other devices in a networked environment. FARM not only automates the file-search process but also provides accurate results as demonstrated by the experimental analysis.
In order to facilitate a file search and take advantage of the Semantic Web Technologies, the SemFARM framework is proposed which utilizes the knowledge of a generic ontology. The generic ontology defines the most common keywords that can be used as the metadata of stored files. This provides semantic-based file search capabilities on low-end devices where the search keywords are enriched with additional knowledge extracted from the defined ontology. The existing frameworks annotate image files only, while SemFARM can be used to annotate all types of files.
Semantic heterogeneity is a challenging issue and necessitates extensive research to accomplish the aim of a semantic web. For this reason, significant research efforts have been made in recent years by proposing an enormous number of ontology alignment systems to deal with ontology heterogeneities.
In the process of aligning different ontologies, it is essential to encompass their semantic, structural or any system-specific measures in mapping decisions to produce more accurate alignments. The proposed solution, in this thesis, for ontology alignment presents a structural matcher, which computes the similarity between the super-classes, sub-classes and properties of two entities from different ontologies that require aligning. The proposed alignment system (OARS)
uses Rough Sets to aggregate the results obtained from various matchers in order to deal with uncertainties during the mapping process of entities. The OARS uses a combinational approach by using a string-based and linguistic-based matcher, in addition to structural-matcher for computing the overall similarity between two entities. The performance of the OARS is evaluated in comparison with existing state of the art alignment systems in terms of precision and recall. The performance tests are performed by using benchmark ontologies and the results show significant improvements, specifically in terms of recall on all groups of test ontologies. There is no such existing framework, which can use alignments for file search on mobile devices.
The ontology alignment paradigm is integrated in the SemFARM to further enhance the file search features of the framework as it utilises the knowledge of more than one ontology in order to perform a search query. The experimental evaluations show that it performs better in terms of precision and recall where more than one ontology is available when searching for a required file.Education Commission of Pakistan and the University of Engineering & Technology, Peshawa
Graph-based discovery of ontology change patterns
Ontologies can support a variety of purposes, ranging from capturing conceptual knowledge to the organisation of digital content and information. However, information systems are always subject to change and ontology change management can pose challenges. We investigate ontology change representation and discovery of change patterns.
Ontology changes are formalised as graph-based change logs. We use attributed graphs, which are typed over a generic graph with node and edge attribution. We analyse ontology change logs, represented as graphs, and identify frequent change sequences. Such sequences are applied as a reference in order to discover reusable, often domain-specific and usagedriven change patterns. We describe the pattern discovery algorithms and measure their performance using experimental result
Link Before You Share: Managing Privacy Policies through Blockchain
With the advent of numerous online content providers, utilities and
applications, each with their own specific version of privacy policies and its
associated overhead, it is becoming increasingly difficult for concerned users
to manage and track the confidential information that they share with the
providers. Users consent to providers to gather and share their Personally
Identifiable Information (PII). We have developed a novel framework to
automatically track details about how a users' PII data is stored, used and
shared by the provider. We have integrated our Data Privacy ontology with the
properties of blockchain, to develop an automated access control and audit
mechanism that enforces users' data privacy policies when sharing their data
across third parties. We have also validated this framework by implementing a
working system LinkShare. In this paper, we describe our framework on detail
along with the LinkShare system. Our approach can be adopted by Big Data users
to automatically apply their privacy policy on data operations and track the
flow of that data across various stakeholders.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, Published in: 4th International Workshop on

Business integration models in the context of web services.
E-commerce development and applications have
been bringing the Internet to business and marketing
and reforming our current business styles and
processes. The rapid development of the Web, in
particular, the introduction of the semantic web and
web service technologies, enables business
processes, modeling and management to enter an
entirely new stage. Traditional web based business
data and transactions can now be analyzed,
extracted and modeled to discover new business
rules and to form new business strategies, let alone
mining the business data in order to classify
customers or products. In this paper, we investigate
and analyze the business integration models in the
context of web services using a micro-payment
system because a micro-payment system is
considered to be a service intensive activity, where
many payment tasks involve different forms of
services, such as payment method selection for
buyers, security support software, product price
comparison, etc. We will use the micro-payment case
to discuss and illustrate how the web services
approaches support and transform the business
process and integration model.
An Ontology Approach for Knowledge Acquisition and Development of Health Information System (HIS)
This paper emphasizes various knowledge acquisition approaches in terms of tacit and explicit knowledge management that can be helpful to capture, codify and communicate within medical unit. The semantic-based knowledge management system (SKMS) supports knowledge acquisition and incorporates various approaches to provide systematic practical platform to knowledge practitioners and to identify various roles of healthcare professionals, tasks that can be performed according to personnelâs competencies, and activities that are carried out as a part of tasks to achieve defined goals of clinical process. This research outcome gives new vision to IT practitioners to manage the tacit and implicit knowledge in XML format which can be taken as foundation for the development of information systems (IS) so that domain end-users can receive timely healthcare related services according to their demands and needs
Moving Object Trajectories Meta-Model And Spatio-Temporal Queries
In this paper, a general moving object trajectories framework is put forward
to allow independent applications processing trajectories data benefit from a
high level of interoperability, information sharing as well as an efficient
answer for a wide range of complex trajectory queries. Our proposed meta-model
is based on ontology and event approach, incorporates existing presentations of
trajectory and integrates new patterns like space-time path to describe
activities in geographical space-time. We introduce recursive Region of
Interest concepts and deal mobile objects trajectories with diverse
spatio-temporal sampling protocols and different sensors available that
traditional data model alone are incapable for this purpose.Comment: International Journal of Database Management Systems (IJDMS) Vol.4,

OntoWeaver S: supporting the design of knowledge portals
This paper presents OntoWeaver-S, an ontology-based infrastructure for building knowledge portals. In particular, OntoWeaver-S is integrated with a comprehensive web service platform, IRS-II, for the publication, discovery, and execution of web services. In this way, OntoWeaver-S supports the access and provision of remote web services for knowledge portals. Moreover, it provides a set of comprehensive site ontologies to model and represent knowledge portals, and thus is able to offer high level support for the design and development process. Finally, OntoWeaver-S provides a set of powerful tools to support knowledge portals at design time as well as at run time
An Approach to Cope with Ontology Changes for Ontology-based Applications
Keeping track of ontology changes is becoming a critical issue for ontology-based applications because updating an ontology that is in use may result in inconsistencies between the ontology and the knowledge base, dependent ontologies and dependent applications/services. Current research concentrates on the creation of ontologies and how to manage ontology changes in terms of the attempts to ease the communications between ontology versions and keep consistent with the instances, and there is little work available on controlling the impact to dependent applications/services which is the aims of the system presented in this paper. The approach we propose in this paper is to manually capture and log ontology changes, use this log to analyse incoming RDQL queries and amend them as necessary. Revised queries can then be used to query the knowledge base of the applications/services. We present the infrastructure of our approach based on the problems and scenarios identified within ontology-based systems. We discuss the issues met during our design and implementation, and consider some problems whose solutions will be beneficial to the development of our approach
