Wind Turbine Fault Detection System in Real Time Remote Monitoring

    Get PDF
In new energy development, wind power has boomed. It is due to theproliferation of wind parks and their operation in supplying the nationalelectric grid with low cost and clean resources. Hence, there is an increasedneed to establish a proactive maintenance for wind turbine machines based on remote control and monitoring. That is necessary with a real-time wireless connection in offshore or inaccessible locations while the wired method has many flaws. The objective of this strategy is to prolong wind turbine lifetime and to increase productivity. The hardware of a remote control and monitoring system for wind turbine parks is designed. It takes advantage of GPRS or Wi-Max wireless module to collect data measurements from different wind machine sensors through IP based multi-hop communication. Computer simulations with Proteus ISIS and OPNET software tools have been conducted to evaluate the performance of the studied system. Study findings show that the designed device is suitable for application in a wind park.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v4i6.647

IMPROVEMENT OF POWER QUALITY OF HYBRID GRID BY NON-LINEAR CONTROLLED DEVICE CONSIDERING TIME DELAYS AND CYBER-ATTACKS

Power Quality is defined as the ability of electrical grid to supply a clean and stable power supply. Steady-state disturbances such as harmonics, faults, voltage sags and swells, etc., deteriorate the power quality of the grid. To ensure constant voltage and frequency to consumers, power quality should be improved and maintained at a desired level. Although several methods are available to improve the power quality in traditional power grids, significant challenges exist in modern power grids, such as non-linearity, time delay and cyber-attacks issues, which need to be considered and solved. This dissertation proposes novel control methods to address the mentioned challenges and thus to improve the power quality of modern hybrid grids. In hybrid grids, the first issue is faults occurring at different points in the system. To overcome this issue, this dissertation proposes non-linear controlled methods like the Fuzzy Logic controlled Thyristor Switched Capacitor (TSC), Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) controlled TSC, and Static Non-Linear controlled TSC. The next issue is the time delay introduced in the network due to its complexities and various computations required. This dissertation proposes two new methods such as the Fuzzy Logic Controller and Modified Predictor to minimize adverse effects of time delays on the power quality enhancement. The last and major issue is the cyber-security aspect of the hybrid grid. This research analyzes the effects of cyber-attacks on various components such as the Energy Storage System (ESS), the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) of the synchronous generator, the grid side converter (GSC) of the wind generator, and the voltage source converter (VSC) of Photovoltaic (PV) system, located in a hybrid power grid. Also, this dissertation proposes two new techniques such as a Non-Linear (NL) controller and a Proportional-Integral (PI) controller for mitigating the adverse effects of cyber-attacks on the mentioned devices, and a new detection and mitigation technique based on the voltage threshold for the Supercapacitor Energy System (SES). Simulation results obtained through the MATLAB/Simulink software show the effectiveness of the proposed new control methods for power quality improvement. Also, the proposed methods perform better than conventional methods

Smart grid architecture for rural distribution networks: application to a Spanish pilot network

This paper presents a novel architecture for rural distribution grids. This architecture is designed to modernize traditional rural networks into new Smart Grid ones. The architecture tackles innovation actions on both the power plane and the management plane of the system. In the power plane, the architecture focuses on exploiting the synergies between telecommunications and innovative technologies based on power electronics managing low scale electrical storage. In the management plane, a decentralized management system is proposed based on the addition of two new agents assisting the typical Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system of distribution system operators. Altogether, the proposed architecture enables operators to use more effectively—in an automated and decentralized way—weak rural distribution systems, increasing the capability to integrate new distributed energy resources. This architecture is being implemented in a real Pilot Network located in Spain, in the frame of the European Smart Rural Grid project. The paper also includes a study case showing one of the potentialities of one of the principal technologies developed in the project and underpinning the realization of the new architecture: the so-called Intelligent Distribution Power Router.Postprint (published version

A Review and an Approach of Flying Electric Generators as Alternate Source of Energy

This paper presents a review of flying electric generators which are used to harness kinetic energy in powerful, persistent high altitude winds. It has been found that FEGs could give individual output of up to 40MW. It is a lighter wind turbine that rotates about a horizontal axis in response to wind, generating electrical energy. This electrical energy is transferred down for immediate use, or to a set of batteries for later use, or to the power grid. This paper presents the critical analysis of existing literature which is relevant to flying electric generator Though, the literature consists of a lot many research contributions, but, here, we have analyzed some important research and review papers. The existing approaches are categorized based on the basic concepts involved in the mechanisms. The emphasis is on the concepts used by the concerned authors, the database used for experimentations and the performance evaluation parameters. Their claims are also highlighted. Finally, the findings are summarized related to the studied and analyzed research papers. Paper concludes with the motivation behind identified problem

New High-Speed Directional Relay Based on Wireless Sensor Network for Smart Grid Protection

The production of energy from water represents large amounts of clean and renewable energy. However, only 30% of this energy has been developed so far. Hydropower, particularly hydropower plants, is not only environmentally friendly but also economical, and operates more efficiently than any other renewable energy system. Hydropower plants are largely automated and have relatively low operating costs. The main components of the power system must be continuously monitored and protected to maintain the quality and reliability of the power source. This task is provided by the data collection, monitoring and protection system. Turbines must be protected not only by short circuits but also by abnormal conditions. The proposed protection has been designed to avoid damaging the original power (motor or turbine), this usually happens when the generator fails, and the machine operates as a synchronous motor connected to the power system. In this case, the generator becomes an active load, causing a rise in temperature and severe damage to the main turbine, and hence it becomes a need to quickly detect these conditions. This study proposes a new controller for Neuro-Fuzzy to prevent reverse power flow and to keep the quality and reliability of supply. Fuzzy system network has attracted various scientific and engineering researchers. The new feature of this work is to adjust the membership function as a reverse mechanism derived of the Fuzzy Logic Controller. The smart meter network is the basis of the smart grid. In this study, smart grid meters were implemented using ZigBee technology based on wireless sensor networks. The ZigBee network of wireless sensors due to its low battery, low power consumption, become more useful than other wireless communication systems to provide a high-performance measurement. This study shows the ZigBee network using the OPNET simulation. Depending on the performance, parameters were analysed to understand the operating characteristics of the star, tree, and mesh
