Building information modeling – A game changer for interoperability and a chance for digital preservation of architectural data?
Digital data associated with the architectural design-andconstruction
process is an essential resource alongside -and even
past- the lifecycle of the construction object it describes. Despite
this, digital architectural data remains to be largely neglected in
digital preservation research – and vice versa, digital preservation
is so far neglected in the design-and-construction process. In the
last 5 years, Building Information Modeling (BIM) has seen a
growing adoption in the architecture and construction domains,
marking a large step towards much needed interoperability. The
open standard IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) is one way in
which data is exchanged in BIM processes. This paper presents a
first digital preservation based look at BIM processes,
highlighting the history and adoption of the methods as well as
the open file format standard IFC (Industry Foundation Classes)
as one way to store and preserve BIM data
Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Digital Preservation
The 12th International Conference on Digital Preservation (iPRES) was held on November 2-6, 2015 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA. There were 327 delegates from 22 countries. The program included 12 long papers, 15 short papers, 33 posters, 3 demos, 6 workshops, 3 tutorials and 5 panels, as well as several interactive sessions and a Digital Preservation Showcase

A Digital Preservation Environment Maturity Matrix for NSLA Libraries: Paper - iPES 2014 - Melbourne
In this paper, the authors describe the work done within the NSLA Digital Preservation Group to create a list and description of the functional components of an ideal digital preservation environment and a matrix of the current stage of development against each component for each NSLA library. After defining underlying assumptions, the functional components were derived from the OAIS standard. A modified Capability Maturity Model was incorporated as a mechanism for determining each organisation’s stage of development against each component. The matrix was then completed by representatives from the Digital Preservation Group in each of the ten NSLA libraries. The respondents were asked to self-rate their organisations for both the current digital preservation situation, and an intended situation in three years’ time. NSLA has identified digital preservation as an area of priority. The results from the Digital Preservation Environment Maturity Matrix reveal that NSLA libraries are on the right path but have some way to go before digital preservation processes are mature, sustainable and fit for purpose. Collaboration on policies, products and infrastructure will continue to address these needs
Online cultural heritage materials and the teaching of history in the schools: a concept analysis of state archives and collaborative digitization program web resources
Archives have long been peripheral resources for the elementary and secondary school classroom. Digital technologies carry the promise of strengthening the teaching role of archives. With the rise of the World Wide Web, many archives--along with libraries, museums, and other memory institutions--have digitized portions of their holdings, and some have done so in support of pre-collegiate classrooms. With an exploration of the use of primary sources in the teaching of history as its foundation, this dissertation provides a concept analysis of 24 online history teaching sites maintained by state archives and collaborative statewide digitization programs in the United States. It describes the range and extent of teaching activities used by these sites to build various aspects of one form of domain-specific cognition, history thinking. These aspects include epistemology and evidence, progress and decline, agency, continuity and change, significance, empathy and moral judgment, and narrative building. This research also analyzes the primary sources directly associated with these lessons to determine the subject eras and original formats that they represent, as well as their representation of ethnic minorities, women, and children. The research leads to a proposal for the creation of a collaboratively constructed framework for the teaching of history thinking skills through the use of primary-source-rich, inquiry-based activities
