A Day Ahead Market Energy Auction for Distribution System Operation
In this paper, we study a day ahead double energy auction in a distribution
system involving dispatchable generation units, renewable generation units
supported by battery storage systems(BSSs), fixed loads, price responsive
loads, and supply from the Whole Sale Market(WSM) at Locational Marginal
Price(LMP). The auction is implemented within a Distribution System Operator
(DSO) premises using Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MIP). The proposed
auction is cleared at the Distribution LMP (DLMP) and is observed to be weakly
budget balanced if no penalty is applied for DSO's deviation from originally
committed supply from the WSM. Furthermore, the dynamics of LMP and DLMP, and
their effect on distribution market participants scheduled quantities as well

A Multi-Market-Driven Approach to Energy Scheduling of Smart Microgrids in Distribution Networks
In order to coordinate the economic desire of microgrid (MG) owners and the stability operation requirement of the distribution system operator (DSO), a multi-market participation framework is proposed to stimulate the energy transaction potential of MGs through distributed and centralized ways. Firstly, an MG equipped with storage can contribute to the stability improvement at special nodes of the distribution grid where the uncertain factors (such as intermittent renewable sources and electric vehicles) exist. The DSO is thus interested in encouraging specified MGs to provide voltage stability services by creating a distribution grid service market (DGSM), where the dynamic production-price auction is used to capture the competition of the distributed MGs. Moreover, an aggregator, serving as a broker and controller for MGs, is considered to participate in the day-ahead wholesale market. A Stackelberg game is modeled accordingly to solve the price and quantity package allocation between aggregator and MGs. Finally, the modified IEEE-33 bus distribution test system is used to demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed multi-market mechanism. Local flexibility market design for aggregators providing multiple flexibility services at distribution network level
This paper presents a general description of local flexibility markets as a market-based management mechanism for aggregators. The high penetration of distributed energy resources introduces new flexibility services like prosumer or community self-balancing, congestion management and time-of-use optimization. This work is focused on the flexibility framework to enable multiple participants to compete for selling or buying flexibility. In this framework, the aggregator acts as a local market operator and supervises flexibility transactions of the local energy community. Local market participation is voluntary. Potential flexibility stakeholders are the distribution system operator, the balance responsible party and end-users themselves. Flexibility is sold by means of loads, generators, storage units and electric vehicles. Finally, this paper presents needed interactions between all local market stakeholders, the corresponding inputs and outputs of local market operation algorithms from participants and a case study to highlight the application of the local flexibility market in three scenarios. The local market framework could postpone grid upgrades, reduce energy costs and increase distribution gridsâ hosting capacity.Postprint (published version
Smart Microgrids: Overview and Outlook
The idea of changing our energy system from a hierarchical design into a set
of nearly independent microgrids becomes feasible with the availability of
small renewable energy generators. The smart microgrid concept comes with
several challenges in research and engineering targeting load balancing,
pricing, consumer integration and home automation. In this paper we first
provide an overview on these challenges and present approaches that target the
problems identified. While there exist promising algorithms for the particular
field, we see a missing integration which specifically targets smart
microgrids. Therefore, we propose an architecture that integrates the presented
approaches and defines interfaces between the identified components such as

Europe is liberalising electricity in accordance with the European Commissionâs Electricity Directives. Different countries have responded differently, notably in the extent of restructuring, treatment of mergers, market power, and vertical unbundling. While Britain and Norway have achieved effective competition, others like Germany, Spain and France are still struggling to deal with dominant and sometimes vertically integrated companies. The Netherlands offers an interesting intermediate case, where good economic analysis has sometimes been thwarted by legalistic interpretations. A Novel Business Model for Aggregating the Values of Electricity Storage
Electricity storage is considered a valuable source of flexibility whose applications cover the whole electricity value chain. However, most of the existing evaluation methods for electricity storage are conceived for only one specific use of the storage, which often leads to the conclusion that the investment on storage does not pay off. We think that the value of storage cannot be properly estimated without taking into account the possibility of aggregating the services that storage can offer to different actors. In this paper, we propose a new business model that allows aggregating multiple revenue streams of electricity storage in a systematic way. The main idea of the business model is to coordinate a series of auctions in which the right to utilize the storage unit is auctioned in different time horizons. The model consists of an optimization module and a coordination mechanism. The former simulates the optimal strategy of a certain actor using the available storage capacities in a certain auction, while the latter ensures non-conflicting uses of storage by actors in different auctions. The functioning of the model is demonstrated by a case study. The results show that a storage unit can achieve a higher return on investment in the manner proposed in the business model.electricity storage; business model; optimization
Optimized Energy Management Strategy for Wind Plants with Storage in Energy and Reserve Markets
This paper addresses the joint operation of wind plants with energy storage systemsin multiple markets to increase the value of wind energy from an economic and technical point of view. The development of an optimized energy management allows scheduling the wind generation in energymarkets, as well as contributing to the system stability through the joint participation in frequency ancillary services. The market optimization maximizes market revenuesconsidering overallstoragecosts, while avoidingenergy imbalancesand market penalties. Moreover, wind power fluctuations, forecast errors and real-time reserverequirementsare controlledby the energy storagesystem and managed afterward through the participation in continuous intraday market. Furthermore, model predictive control approach enables a high compliance of reserve requirementsand a hugereduction of energy imbalancesin real-time operation.
