Low density parity check (LDPC) decoders represent important throughput bottlenecks, as well as major cost and power-consuming components in today\u27s digital circuits for wireless communication and storage. They present a wide range of architectural choices, with different throughput, cost, and error correction capability trade-offs. In this book chapter, we will present an overview of the main design options in the architecture and implementation of these circuits on field programmable gate array (FPGA) devices. We will present the mapping of the main units within the LDPC decoders on the specific embedded components of FPGA device. We will review architectural trade-offs for both flooded and layered scheduling strategies in their FPGA implementation

[EN] The first generation of Terrestrial Digital Television(DTV) has been in service for over a decade. In 2013, several countries have already completed the transition from Analog to Digital TV Broadcasting, most of which in Europe. In South America, after several studies and trials, Brazil adopted the Japanese standard with some innovations. Japan and Brazil started Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting (DTTB) services in December 2003 and December 2007 respectively, using Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting - Terrestrial (ISDB-T), also known as ARIB STD-B31. In June 2005 the Committee for the Information Technology Area (CATI) of Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology and Innovation MCTI approved the incorporation of the IC-Brazil Program, in the National Program for Microelectronics (PNM) . The main goals of IC-Brazil are the formal qualification of IC designers, support to the creation of semiconductors companies focused on projects of ICs within Brazil, and the attraction of semiconductors companies focused on the design and development of ICs in Brazil. The work presented in this thesis originated from the unique momentum created by the combination of the birth of Digital Television in Brazil and the creation of the IC-Brazil Program by the Brazilian government. Without this combination it would not have been possible to make these kind of projects in Brazil. These projects have been a long and costly journey, albeit scientifically and technologically worthy, towards a Brazilian DTV state-of-the-art low complexity Integrated Circuit, with good economy scale perspectives, due to the fact that at the beginning of this project ISDB-T standard was not adopted by several countries like DVB-T. During the development of the ISDB-T receiver proposed in this thesis, it was realized that due to the continental dimensions of Brazil, the DTTB would not be enough to cover the entire country with open DTV signal, specially for the case of remote localizations far from the high urban density regions. Then, Eldorado Research Institute and Idea! Electronic Systems, foresaw that, in a near future, there would be an open distribution system for high definition DTV over satellite, in Brazil. Based on that, it was decided by Eldorado Research Institute, that would be necessary to create a new ASIC for broadcast satellite reception. At that time DVB-S2 standard was the strongest candidate for that, and this assumption still stands nowadays. Therefore, it was decided to apply to a new round of resources funding from the MCTI - that was granted - in order to start the new project. This thesis discusses in details the Architecture and Algorithms proposed for the implementation of a low complexity Intermediate Frequency(IF) ISDB-T Receiver on Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) CMOS. The Architecture proposed here is highly based on the COordinate Rotation Digital Computer (CORDIC) Algorithm, that is a simple and efficient algorithm suitable for VLSI implementations. The receiver copes with the impairments inherent to wireless channels transmission and the receiver crystals. The thesis also discusses the Methodology adopted and presents the implementation results. The receiver performance is presented and compared to those obtained by means of simulations. Furthermore, the thesis also presents the Architecture and Algorithms for a DVB-S2 receiver targeting its ASIC implementation. However, unlike the ISDB-T receiver, only preliminary ASIC implementation results are introduced. This was mainly done in order to have an early estimation of die area to prove that the project in ASIC is economically viable, as well as to verify possible bugs in early stage. As in the case of ISDB-T receiver, this receiver is highly based on CORDIC algorithm and it was prototyped in FPGA. The Methodology used for the second receiver is derived from that used for the ISDB-T receiver, with minor additions given the project characteristics.[ES] La primera generación de Televisión Digital Terrestre(DTV) ha estado en servicio por más de una década. Architecture and Analysis for Next Generation Mobile Signal Processing.

Mobile devices have proliferated at a spectacular rate, with more than 3.3 billion active cell phones in the world. With sales totaling hundreds of billions every year, the mobile phone has arguably become the dominant computing platform, replacing the personal computer. Soon, improvements to today’s smart phones, such as high-bandwidth internet access, high-definition video processing, and human-centric interfaces that integrate voice recognition and video-conferencing will be commonplace. Cost effective and power efficient support for these applications will be required. Looking forward to the next generation of mobile computing, computation requirements will increase by one to three orders of magnitude due to higher data rates, increased complexity algorithms, and greater computation diversity but the power requirements will be just as stringent to ensure reasonable battery lifetimes. The design of the next generation of mobile platforms must address three critical challenges: efficiency, programmability, and adaptivity. The computational efficiency of existing solutions is inadequate and straightforward scaling by increasing the number of cores or the amount of data-level parallelism will not suffice. Programmability provides the opportunity for a single platform to support multiple applications and even multiple standards within each application domain. Programmability also provides: faster time to market as hardware and software development can proceed in parallel; the ability to fix bugs and add features after manufacturing; and, higher chip volumes as a single platform can support a family of mobile devices. Lastly, hardware adaptivity is necessary to maintain efficiency as the computational characteristics of the applications change. Current solutions are tailored specifically for wireless signal processing algorithms, but lose their efficiency when other application domains like high definition video are processed. This thesis addresses these challenges by presenting analysis of next generation mobile signal processing applications and proposing an advanced signal processing architecture to deal with the stringent requirements. An application-centric design approach is taken to design our architecture. First, a next generation wireless protocol and high definition video is analyzed and algorithmic characterizations discussed. From these characterizations, key architectural implications are presented, which form the basis for the advanced signal processor architecture, AnySP.Ph.D.Electrical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. High throughput low power decoder architectures for low density parity check codes

A high throughput scalable decoder architecture, a tiling approach to reduce the complexity of the scalable architecture, and two low power decoding schemes have been proposed in this research. The proposed scalable design is generated from a serial architecture by scaling the combinational logic; memory partitioning and constructing a novel H matrix to make parallelization possible. The scalable architecture achieves a high throughput for higher values of the parallelization factor M. The switch logic used to route the bit nodes to the appropriate checks is an important constituent of the scalable architecture and its complexity is high with higher M. The proposed tiling approach is applied to the scalable architecture to simplify the switch logic and reduce gate complexity. The tiling approach generates patterns that are used to construct the H matrix by repeating a fixed number of those generated patterns. The advantages of the proposed approach are two-fold. First, the information stored about the H matrix is reduced by onethird. Second, the switch logic of the scalable architecture is simplified. The H matrix information is also embedded in the switch and no external memory is needed to store the H matrix. Scalable architecture and tiling approach are proposed at the architectural level of the LDPC decoder. We propose two low power decoding schemes that take advantage of the distribution of errors in the received packets. Both schemes use a hard iteration after a fixed number of soft iterations. The dynamic scheme performs X soft iterations, then a parity checker cHT that computes the number of parity checks in error. Based on cHT value, the decoder decides on performing either soft iterations or a hard iteration. The advantage of the hard iteration is so significant that the second low power scheme performs a fixed number of iterations followed by a hard iteration. To compensate the bit error rate performance, the number of soft iterations in this case is higher than that of those performed before cHT in the first scheme

Architectures multi-Asip pour turbo récepteur flexible

Rapidly evolving wireless standards use modern techniques such as turbo codes, Bit Interleaved coded Modulation (BICM), high order QAM constellation, Signal Space Diversity (SSD), Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) Spatial Multiplexing (SM) and Space Time Codes (STC) with different parameters for reliable high rate data transmissions. Adoption of such techniques in the transmitter can impact the receiver architecture in three ways: (1) the complex processing related to advanced techniques such as turbo codes, encourage to perform iterative processing in the receiver to improve error rate performance (2) to satisfy high throughput requirement for an iterative receiver, parallel processing is mandatory and finally (3) to allow the support of different techniques and parameters imposed, programmable yet high throughput hardware processing elements are required. In this thesis, to address the high throughput requirement with turbo processing, first of all a study of parallelism on turbo decoding is extended for turbo demodulation and turbo equalization. Based on the results acquired from the parallelism study a flexible high throughput heterogeneous multi-ASIP NoC based unified turbo receiver is proposed. The proposed architecture fulfils the target requirements in a way that: (a) Application Specific Instruction-set Processor (ASIP) exploits metric generation level parallelism and implements the required flexibility, (b) throughputs beyond the capacity of single ASIP in a turbo process are achieved through multiple ASIP elements implementing sub-block parallelism and shuffled processing and finally (c) Network on Chip is used to handle communication conflicts during parallel processing of multiple ASIPs. In pursuit to achieve a hardware model of the proposed architecture two ASIPs are conceived where the first one, namely EquASIP, is dedicated for MMSE-IC equalization and provides a flexible solution for multiple MIMO techniques adopted in multiple wireless standards with a capability to work in turbo equalization context. The second ASIP, named as DemASIP, is a flexible demapper which can be used in MIMO or single antenna environment for any modulation till 256-QAM with or without iterative demodulation.

Energy-Efficient Computing for Mobile Signal Processing

Mobile devices have rapidly proliferated, and deployment of handheld devices continues to increase at a spectacular rate. As today's devices not only support advanced signal processing of wireless communication data but also provide rich sets of applications, contemporary mobile computing requires both demanding computation and efficiency. Most mobile processors combine general-purpose processors, digital signal processors, and hardwired application-specific integrated circuits to satisfy their high-performance and low-power requirements. However, such a heterogeneous platform is inefficient in area, power and programmability. Improving the efficiency of programmable mobile systems is a critical challenge and an active area of computer systems research. SIMD (single instruction multiple data) architectures are very effective for data-level-parallelism intense algorithms in mobile signal processing. However, new characteristics of advanced wireless/multimedia algorithms require architectural re-evaluation to achieve better energy efficiency. Therefore, fourth generation wireless protocol and high definition mobile video algorithms are analyzed to enhance a wide-SIMD architecture. The key enhancements include 1) programmable crossbar to support complex data alignment, 2) SIMD partitioning to support fine-grain SIMD computation, and 3) fused operation to support accelerating frequently used instruction pairs. Near-threshold computation has been attractive in low-power architecture research because it balances performance and power. To further improve energy efficiency in mobile computing, near-threshold computation is applied to a wide SIMD architecture. This proposed near-threshold wide SIMD architecture-Diet SODA-presents interesting architectural design decisions such as 1) very wide SIMD datapath to compensate for degraded performance induced by near-threshold computation and 2) scatter-gather data prefetcher to exploit large latency gap between memory and the SIMD datapath. Although near-threshold computation provides excellent energy efficiency, it suffers from increased delay variations. A systematic study of delay variations in near-threshold computing is performed and simple techniques-structural duplication and voltage/frequency margining-are explored to tolerate and mitigate the delay variations in near-threshold wide SIMD architectures. This dissertation analyzes representative wireless/multimedia mobile signal processing algorithms, proposes an energy-efficient programmable platform, and evaluates performance and power. A main theme of this dissertation is that the performance and efficiency of programmable embedded systems can be significantly improved with a combination of parallel SIMD and near-threshold computations.Ph.D.Electrical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. COST EFFICIENT PROVISIONING OF MASS MOBILE MULTIMEDIA SERVICES IN HYBRID CELLULAR AND BROADCASTING SYSTEMS
