    Remote sensing is a field where important physical characteristics of an area are exacted using emitted radiation generally captured by satellite cameras, sensors onboard aerial vehicles, etc. Captured data help researchers develop solutions to sense and detect various characteristics such as forest fires, flooding, changes in urban areas, crop diseases, soil moisture, etc. The recent impressive progress in artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning has sparked innovations in technologies, algorithms, and approaches and led to results that were unachievable until recently in multiple areas, among them remote sensing.     Collision Avoidance on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles using Deep Neural Networks

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), although hardly a new technology, have recently gained a prominent role in many industries, being widely used not only among enthusiastic consumers but also in high demanding professional situations, and will have a massive societal impact over the coming years. However, the operation of UAVs is full of serious safety risks, such as collisions with dynamic obstacles (birds, other UAVs, or randomly thrown objects). These collision scenarios are complex to analyze in real-time, sometimes being computationally impossible to solve with existing State of the Art (SoA) algorithms, making the use of UAVs an operational hazard and therefore significantly reducing their commercial applicability in urban environments. In this work, a conceptual framework for both stand-alone and swarm (networked) UAVs is introduced, focusing on the architectural requirements of the collision avoidance subsystem to achieve acceptable levels of safety and reliability. First, the SoA principles for collision avoidance against stationary objects are reviewed. Afterward, a novel image processing approach that uses deep learning and optical flow is presented. This approach is capable of detecting and generating escape trajectories against potential collisions with dynamic objects. Finally, novel models and algorithms combinations were tested, providing a new approach for the collision avoidance of UAVs using Deep Neural Networks. The feasibility of the proposed approach was demonstrated through experimental tests using a UAV, created from scratch using the framework developed.Os veículos aéreos não tripulados (VANTs), embora dificilmente considerados uma nova tecnologia, ganharam recentemente um papel de destaque em muitas indústrias, sendo amplamente utilizados não apenas por amadores, mas também em situações profissionais de alta exigência, sendo expectável um impacto social massivo nos próximos anos. No entanto, a operação de VANTs está repleta de sérios riscos de segurança, como colisões com obstáculos dinâmicos (pássaros, outros VANTs ou objetos arremessados). Estes cenários de colisão são complexos para analisar em tempo real, às vezes sendo computacionalmente impossível de resolver com os algoritmos existentes, tornando o uso de VANTs um risco operacional e, portanto, reduzindo significativamente a sua aplicabilidade comercial em ambientes citadinos. Neste trabalho, uma arquitectura conceptual para VANTs autônomos e em rede é apresentada, com foco nos requisitos arquitetônicos do subsistema de prevenção de colisão para atingir níveis aceitáveis de segurança e confiabilidade. Os estudos presentes na literatura para prevenção de colisão contra objectos estacionários são revistos e uma nova abordagem é descrita. Esta tecnica usa técnicas de aprendizagem profunda e processamento de imagem, para realizar a prevenção de colisões em tempo real com objetos móveis. Por fim, novos modelos e combinações de algoritmos são propostos, fornecendo uma nova abordagem para evitar colisões de VANTs usando Redes Neurais Profundas. A viabilidade da abordagem foi demonstrada através de testes experimentais utilizando um VANT, desenvolvido a partir da arquitectura apresentada

    New Global Perspectives on Archaeological Prospection

    This volume is a product of the 13th International Conference on Archaeological Prospection 2019, which was hosted by the Department of Environmental Science in the Faculty of Science at the Institute of Technology Sligo. The conference is held every two years under the banner of the International Society for Archaeological Prospection and this was the first time that the conference was held in Ireland. New Global Perspectives on Archaeological Prospection draws together over 90 papers addressing archaeological prospection techniques, methodologies and case studies from 33 countries across Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe and North America, reflecting current and global trends in archaeological prospection. At this particular ICAP meeting, specific consideration was given to the development and use of archaeological prospection in Ireland, archaeological feedback for the prospector, applications of prospection technology in the urban environment and the use of legacy data. Papers include novel research areas such as magnetometry near the equator, drone-mounted radar, microgravity assessment of tombs, marine electrical resistivity tomography, convolutional neural networks, data processing, automated interpretive workflows and modelling as well as recent improvements in remote sensing, multispectral imaging and visualisation

    Photogrammetric suite to manage the survey workflow in challenging environments and conditions

    The present work is intended in providing new and innovative instruments to support the photogrammetric survey workflow during all its phases. A suite of tools has been conceived in order to manage the planning, the acquisition, the post-processing and the restitution steps, with particular attention to the rigorousness of the approach and to the final precision. The main focus of the research has been the implementation of the tool MAGO, standing for Adaptive Mesh for Orthophoto Generation. Its novelty consists in the possibility to automatically reconstruct \u201cunrolled\u201d orthophotos of adjacent fa\ue7ades of a building using the point cloud, instead of the mesh, as input source for the orthophoto reconstruction. The second tool has been conceived as a photogrammetric procedure based on Bundle Block Adjustment. The same issue is analysed from two mirrored perspectives: on the one hand, the use of moving cameras in a static scenario in order to manage real-time indoor navigation; on the other hand, the use of static cameras in a moving scenario in order to achieve the simultaneously reconstruction of the 3D model of the changing object. A third tool named U.Ph.O., standing for Unmanned Photogrammetric Office, has been integrated with a new module. The general aim is on the one hand to plan the photogrammetric survey considering the expected precision, computed on the basis of a network simulation, and on the other hand to check if the achieved survey has been collected compatibly with the planned conditions. The provided integration concerns the treatment of surfaces with a generic orientation further than the ones with a planimetric development. After a brief introduction, a general description about the photogrammetric principles is given in the first chapter of the dissertation; a chapter follows about the parallelism between Photogrammetry and Computer Vision and the contribution of this last in the development of the described tools. The third chapter specifically regards, indeed, the implemented software and tools, while the fourth contains the training test and the validation. Finally, conclusions and future perspectives are reported

    3D Recording and Interpretation for Maritime Archaeology

    This open access peer-reviewed volume was inspired by the UNESCO UNITWIN Network for Underwater Archaeology International Workshop held at Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia in November 2016. Content is based on, but not limited to, the work presented at the workshop which was dedicated to 3D recording and interpretation for maritime archaeology. The volume consists of contributions from leading international experts as well as up-and-coming early career researchers from around the globe. The content of the book includes recording and analysis of maritime archaeology through emerging technologies, including both practical and theoretical contributions. Topics include photogrammetric recording, laser scanning, marine geophysical 3D survey techniques, virtual reality, 3D modelling and reconstruction, data integration and Geographic Information Systems. The principal incentive for this publication is the ongoing rapid shift in the methodologies of maritime archaeology within recent years and a marked increase in the use of 3D and digital approaches. This convergence of digital technologies such as underwater photography and photogrammetry, 3D sonar, 3D virtual reality, and 3D printing has highlighted a pressing need for these new methodologies to be considered together, both in terms of defining the state-of-the-art and for consideration of future directions. As a scholarly publication, the audience for the book includes students and researchers, as well as professionals working in various aspects of archaeology, heritage management, education, museums, and public policy.     Towards the Implementation of a Geotechnical Asset Management Program in the State of Georgia

    PI# 0000240717Experiences at U.S. departments of transportation (DOTs) have demonstrated the value of geotechnical asset management (GAM) to enable a framework for informed decisions that align the DOT\u2019s objectives with investment and performance targets. However, because Georgia currently lacks a such a program, this study was performed to set the stage for developing a GAM program in the state with a primary focus on retaining walls. While walls were identified as the asset of the highest importance in Georgia, other critical infrastructure assets (i.e., slopes, embankments, and bridge foundations) were also considered. The proposed GAM system consisted of three phases: (1) inventory during design, (2) as-built inventory, and (3) maintenance inspection. Towards the development of a state-wide GAM program, a computational platform that accommodated the different proposed phases was developed and tested in metro Atlanta areas. The study also reviewed image-based and remote-sensing technologies for GAM. In particular, proof-of-concept studies that combined image-based and machine learning technologies for optimizing GAM processes for retaining walls in the metro Atlanta area were conducted, showing promising results. The study concluded by providing a road map for establishing a GAM program in the state of Georgia, considering short-term and long-term recommendations

    A survey on active simultaneous localization and mapping: state of the art and new frontiers

    Active simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is the problem of planning and controlling the motion of a robot to build the most accurate and complete model of the surrounding environment. Since the first foundational work in active perception appeared, more than three decades ago, this field has received increasing attention across different scientific communities. This has brought about many different approaches and formulations, and makes a review of the current trends necessary and extremely valuable for both new and experienced researchers. In this article, we survey the state of the art in active SLAM and take an in-depth look at the open challenges that still require attention to meet the needs of modern applications. After providing a historical perspective, we present a unified problem formulation and review the well-established modular solution scheme, which decouples the problem into three stages that identify, select, and execute potential navigation actions. We then analyze alternative approaches, including belief-space planning and deep reinforcement learning techniques, and review related work on multirobot coordination. This article concludes with a discussion of new research directions, addressing reproducible research, active spatial perception, and practical applications, among other topics
