    A Comprehensive Model of Usability

    Abstract. Usability is a key quality attribute of successful software systems. Unfortunately, there is no common understanding of the factors influencing usability and their interrelations. Hence, the lack of a comprehensive basis for designing, analyzing, and improving user interfaces. This paper proposes a 2-dimensional model of usability that associates system properties with the activities carried out by the user. By separating activities and properties, sound quality criteria can be identified, thus facilitating statements concerning their interdependencies. This model is based on a tested quality meta-model that fosters preciseness and completeness. A case study demonstrates the manner by which such a model aids in revealing contradictions and omissions in existing usability standards. Furthermore, the model serves as a central and structured knowledge base for the entire quality assurance process, e.g. the automatic generation of guideline documents

    A model-based framework for classifying and diagnosing usability problems

    A great deal of study has been devoted to the problem of how to identify and categorize usability problems; however, there is still a lack of studies dealing with the problem of how to diagnose the causes of usability problems and how to feed them back into design process. The value of classifying usability problems can be enhanced when they are interpreted in connection with design process and activities. Thus, it is necessary to develop a systematic way of diagnosing usability problems in terms of design aspects and applying diagnosis results to improve design process and activities. With this issue in mind, this paper proposes a conceptual framework that supports a systematic classification and diagnosis of usability problems. This paper firstly reviews seven approaches to classifying usability problems. Then, we point out the needs of adopting a model-based approach to classifying and diagnosing usability problems and of developing a comprehensive framework guiding the use of model-based approaches. We then propose a conceptual framework that specifies how a model-based classification and diagnosis of usability problems should be conducted and suggests the combined use of three different types of models, each of which addresses context of use, design knowledge and design activities. Last, we explain how a sound classification scheme of usability problems can be systematically developed, and how the classification of usability problems can be connected to design process and activities on the basis of the framework

    Web Service Testing and Usability for Mobile Learning

    Based on the summary of recent renowned publications, Mobile Learning (ML) has become an emerging technology, as well as a new technique that can enhance the quality of learning. Due to the increasing importance of ML, the investigation of such impacts on the e-Science community is amongst the hot topics, which also relate to part of these research areas: Grid Infrastructure, Wireless Communication, Virtual Research Organization and Semantic Web. The above examples contribute to the demonstrations of how Mobile Learning can be applied into e-Science applications, including usability. However, there are few papers addressing testing and quality engineering issues – the core component for software engineering. Therefore, the major purpose of this paper is to present how Web Service Testing for Mobile Learning can be carried out, in addition to re-investigating the influences of the usability issue with both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Out of many mobile technologies available, the Pocket PC and Tablet PC have been chosen as the equipment; and the OMII Web Service, the 64-bit .NET e-portal and the GPS-PDA are the software tools to be used for Web Service testing

    Impact of EHR Usability on Provider Efficiency and Patient Safety in Non-Hospital Settings

    Healthcare organizations may reap benefits transitioning to electronic health records (EHRs), such as decreased healthcare costs and better care. However, severe unintended consequences from implementation and design of these systems have emerged. Poorly implemented EHR systems may endanger the integrity of clinical or administrative data. That, in turn, can lead to errors jeopardizing patient safety or quality of care. A literature review of 40 sources identified how EHR implementation and design can impact provider centric, patient centric, and outcomes. These categories provided the basis for a comprehensive EHR impact model that was evaluated in non-hospital settings through focus groups interviews
