    End-to-End Simulation of 5G mmWave Networks

    Due to its potential for multi-gigabit and low latency wireless links, millimeter wave (mmWave) technology is expected to play a central role in 5th generation cellular systems. While there has been considerable progress in understanding the mmWave physical layer, innovations will be required at all layers of the protocol stack, in both the access and the core network. Discrete-event network simulation is essential for end-to-end, cross-layer research and development. This paper provides a tutorial on a recently developed full-stack mmWave module integrated into the widely used open-source ns--3 simulator. The module includes a number of detailed statistical channel models as well as the ability to incorporate real measurements or ray-tracing data. The Physical (PHY) and Medium Access Control (MAC) layers are modular and highly customizable, making it easy to integrate algorithms or compare Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) numerologies, for example. The module is interfaced with the core network of the ns--3 Long Term Evolution (LTE) module for full-stack simulations of end-to-end connectivity, and advanced architectural features, such as dual-connectivity, are also available. To facilitate the understanding of the module, and verify its correct functioning, we provide several examples that show the performance of the custom mmWave stack as well as custom congestion control algorithms designed specifically for efficient utilization of the mmWave channel.Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures, submitted to IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials (revised Jan. 2018

    A Millimeter Wave based Sensor Data Broadcasting Scheme for Vehicular Communications

    In recent years, vehicles are becoming smart with the aid of various onboard sensing, communication and computing capability, which is helpful to improve road safety and driving experiments. With data fusion technique, a vehicle can even increase the driving safety by obtaining sensor data from other vehicles. The millimeter Wave (mmWave) based Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication technology has become a promising technology to transmit sensor data in huge size such as video streams. However, the high radio frequency of mmWave makes it vulnerable to obstacles. Furthermore, the directional propagation property is not efficient to broadcast information among vehicles. In this paper, we propose a broadcasting scheme to guarantee each vehicle to get the sensor data of all other vehicles. Head vehicles are selected to gather the information on the environment and decide those transmission vehicles and receiving vehicles in each time slot. A graph-based routing selection algorithm is proposed with relatively low complexity. Moreover, the upper bound of broadcasting delay for one dimensional platoon is analyzed based on the network calculus theory. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme has faster delivery rate compared to the traditional First-In-First-Out (FIFO) scheme. The maximum broadcasting delay of the proposed scheme is less than the traditional schemes about 30% in different scenarios

    UAV-Assisted Sensor Data Dissemination in mmWave Vehicular Networks Based on Network Coding

    Due to good maneuverability, UAVs and vehicles are often used for environment perception in smart cities. In order to improve the efficiency of sensor data sharing in UAV-assisted mmWave vehicular network (VN), this paper proposes a sensor data sharing method based on blockage effect identification and network coding. The concurrent sending vehicles selection method is proposed based on the availability of mmWave link, the number of target vehicles of sensor data packet, the distance between a sensor data packet and target vehicle, the number of concurrent sending vehicles, and the waiting time of sensor data packet. The construction method of the coded packet is put forward based on the status information about the existing packets of vehicles. Simulation results demonstrated that efficiency of the proposed method is superior to baseline solutions in terms of the packet loss ratio, transmission time, and packet dissemination ratio

    Cotutela: Universidad de defensa UNIVERSITA’ MEDITERRANEA DI REGGIO CALABRIARecently, the popularity of Millimeter Wave (mmWave) wireless networks has increased due to their capability to cope with the escalation of mobile data demands caused by the unprecedented proliferation of smart devices in the fifth-generation (5G). Extremely high frequency or mmWave band is a fundamental pillar in the provision of the expected gigabit data rates. Hence, according to both academic and industrial communities, mmWave technology, e.g., 5G New Radio (NR) and WiGig (60 GHz), is considered as one of the main components of 5G and beyond networks. Particularly, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) provides for the use of licensed mmWave sub-bands for the 5G mmWave cellular networks, whereas IEEE actively explores the unlicensed band at 60 GHz for the next-generation wireless local area networks. In this regard, mmWave has been envisaged as a new technology layout for real-time heavy-traffic and wearable applications. This very work is devoted to solving the problem of mmWave band communication system while enhancing its advantages through utilizing the direct communication radio interface for NR multicasting, cooperative positioning, and mission-critical applications. The main contributions presented in this work include: (i) a set of mathematical frameworks and simulation tools to characterize multicast traffic delivery in mmWave directional systems; (ii) sidelink relaying concept exploitation to deal with the channel condition deterioration of dynamic multicast systems and to ensure mission-critical and ultra-reliable low-latency communications; (iii) cooperative positioning techniques analysis for enhancing cellular positioning accuracy for 5G+ emerging applications that require not only improved communication characteristics but also precise localization. Our study indicates the need for additional mechanisms/research that can be utilized: (i) to further improve multicasting performance in 5G/6G systems; (ii) to investigate sideline aspects, including, but not limited to, standardization perspective and the next relay selection strategies; and (iii) to design cooperative positioning systems based on Device-to-Device (D2D) technology

    Throughput Maximization for Intelligent Refracting Surface Assisted mmWave High-Speed Train Communications

    With the increasing demands from passengers for data-intensive services, millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is considered as an effective technique to release the transmission pressure on high speed train (HST) networks. However, mmWave signals ncounter severe losses when passing through the carriage, which decreases the quality of services on board. In this paper, we investigate an intelligent refracting surface (IRS)-assisted HST communication system. Herein, an IRS is deployed on the train window to dynamically reconfigure the propagation environment, and a hybrid time division multiple access-nonorthogonal multiple access scheme is leveraged for interference mitigation. We aim to maximize the overall throughput while taking into account the constraints imposed by base station beamforming, IRS discrete phase shifts and transmit power. To obtain a practical solution, we employ an alternating optimization method and propose a two-stage algorithm. In the first stage, the successive convex approximation method and branch and bound algorithm are leveraged for IRS phase shift design. In the second stage, the Lagrangian multiplier method is utilized for power allocation.
