An automated fundus image analysis is used as a tool for the diagnosis of common retinal diseases. A good quality fundus image results in better diagnosis and hence discarding the degraded fundus images at the time of screening itself provides an opportunity to retake the adequate fundus photographs, which save both time and resources. In this paper, we propose a novel fundus image quality assessment (IQA) model using the convolutional neural network (CNN) based on the quality of optic disc (OD) visibility. We localize the OD by transfer learning with Inception v-3 model. Precise segmentation of OD is done using the GrabCut algorithm. Contour operations are applied to the segmented OD to approximate it to the nearest circle for finding its center and diameter. For training the model, we are using the publicly available fundus databases and a private hospital database. We have attained excellent classification accuracy for fundus IQA on DRIVE, CHASE-DB, and HRF databases. For the OD segmentation, we have experimented our method on DRINS-DB, DRISHTI-GS, and RIM-ONE v.3 databases and compared the results with existing state-of-the-art methods. Our proposed method outperforms existing methods for OD segmentation on Jaccard index and F-score metrics

Retinal drug delivery: rethinking outcomes for the efficient replication of retinal behavior

The retina is a highly organized structure that is considered to be "an approachable part of the brain." It is attracting the interest of development scientists, as it provides a model neurovascular system. Over the last few years, we have been witnessing significant development in the knowledge of the mechanisms that induce the shape of the retinal vascular system, as well as knowledge of disease processes that lead to retina degeneration. Knowledge and understanding of how our vision works are crucial to creating a hardware-adaptive computational model that can replicate retinal behavior. The neuronal system is nonlinear and very intricate. It is thus instrumental to have a clear view of the neurophysiological and neuroanatomic processes and to take into account the underlying principles that govern the process of hardware transformation to produce an appropriate model that can be mapped to a physical device. The mechanistic and integrated computational models have enormous potential toward helping to understand disease mechanisms and to explain the associations identified in large model-free data sets. The approach used is modulated and based on different models of drug administration, including the geometry of the eye. This work aimed to review the recently used mathematical models to map a directed retinal network. The authors acknowledge the financial support received from the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT/MCT) and the European Funds (PRODER/COMPETE) for the project UIDB/04469/2020 (strategic fund), co-financed by FEDER, under the Partnership Agreement PT2020. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has impacted our lives in many meaningful ways. For our research, we focus on improving disease diagnosis systems by analyzing medical images using AI, specifically deep learning technologies. The recent advances in deep learning technologies are leading to enhanced performance for medical image analysis and computer-aided disease diagnosis. In this dissertation, we explore a major research area in medical image analysis - Image classification. Image classification is the process to assign an image a label from a fixed set of categories. For our research, we focus on the problem of Alzheimer\u27s Disease (AD) diagnosis from 3D structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (sMRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) brain scans. Alzheimer\u27s Disease is a severe neurological disorder. In this dissertation, we address challenges related to Alzheimer\u27s Disease diagnosis and propose several models for improved diagnosis. We focus on analyzing the 3D Structural MRI (sMRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) brain scans to identify the current stage of Alzheimer\u27s Disease: Normal Controls (CN), Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), and Alzheimer\u27s Disease (AD). This dissertation demonstrates ways to improve the performance of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for Alzheimer\u27s Disease diagnosis. Besides, we present approaches to solve the class-imbalance problem and improving classification performance with limited training data for medical image analysis. To understand the decision of the CNN, we present methods to visualize the behavior of a CNN model for disease diagnosis. As a case study, we analyzed brain PET scans of AD and CN patients to see how CNN discriminates among data samples of different classes. Additionally, this dissertation proposes a novel approach to generate synthetic medical images using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Working with the limited dataset and small amount of annotated samples makes it difficult to develop a robust automated disease diagnosis model. Our proposed model can solve such issue and generate brain MRI and PET images for three different stages of Alzheimer\u27s Disease - Normal Control (CN), Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), and Alzheimer\u27s Disease (AD). Our proposed approach can be generalized to create synthetic data for other medical image analysis problems and help to develop better disease diagnosis model

Generalized Zero Shot Learning For Medical Image Classification

In many real world medical image classification settings we do not have access to samples of all possible disease classes, while a robust system is expected to give high performance in recognizing novel test data. We propose a generalized zero shot learning (GZSL) method that uses self supervised learning (SSL) for: 1) selecting anchor vectors of different disease classes; and 2) training a feature generator. Our approach does not require class attribute vectors which are available for natural images but not for medical images. SSL ensures that the anchor vectors are representative of each class. SSL is also used to generate synthetic features of unseen classes. Using a simpler architecture, our method matches a state of the art SSL based GZSL method for natural images and outperforms all methods for medical images. Our method is adaptable enough to accommodate class attribute vectors when they are available for natural images
