    Decentralized 3D Collision Avoidance for Multiple UAVs in Outdoor Environments

    The use of multiple aerial vehicles for autonomous missions is turning into commonplace. In many of these applications, the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have to cooperate and navigate in a shared airspace, becoming 3D collision avoidance a relevant issue. Outdoor scenarios impose additional challenges: (i) accurate positioning systems are costly; (ii) communication can be unreliable or delayed; and (iii) external conditions like wind gusts affect UAVs’ maneuverability. In this paper, we present 3D-SWAP, a decentralized algorithm for 3D collision avoidance with multiple UAVs. 3D-SWAP operates reactively without high computational requirements and allows UAVs to integrate measurements from their local sensors with positions of other teammates within communication range. We tested 3D-SWAP with our team of custom-designed UAVs. First, we used a Software-In-The-Loop simulator for system integration and evaluation. Second, we run field experiments with up to three UAVs in an outdoor scenario with uncontrolled conditions (i.e., noisy positioning systems, wind gusts, etc).     Airborne collision scenario flight tests: impact of angle measurement errors on reactive vision-based avoidance control

    The future emergence of many types of airborne vehicles and unpiloted aircraft in the national airspace means collision avoidance is of primary concern in an uncooperative airspace environment. The ability to replicate a pilot’s see and avoid capability using cameras coupled with vision based avoidance control is an important part of an overall collision avoidance strategy. But unfortunately without range collision avoidance has no direct way to guarantee a level of safety. Collision scenario flight tests with two aircraft and a monocular camera threat detection and tracking system were used to study the accuracy of image-derived angle measurements. The effect of image-derived angle errors on reactive vision-based avoidance performance was then studied by simulation. The results show that whilst large angle measurement errors can significantly affect minimum ranging characteristics across a variety of initial conditions and closing speeds, the minimum range is always bounded and a collision never occurs

    Fault-tolerant formation driving mechanism designed for heterogeneous MAVs-UGVs groups

    A fault-tolerant method for stabilization and navigation of 3D heterogeneous formations is proposed in this paper. The presented Model Predictive Control (MPC) based approach enables to deploy compact formations of closely cooperating autonomous aerial and ground robots in surveillance scenarios without the necessity of a precise external localization. Instead, the proposed method relies on a top-view visual relative localization provided by the micro aerial vehicles flying above the ground robots and on a simple yet stable visual based navigation using images from an onboard monocular camera. The MPC based schema together with a fault detection and recovery mechanism provide a robust solution applicable in complex environments with static and dynamic obstacles. The core of the proposed leader-follower based formation driving method consists in a representation of the entire 3D formation as a convex hull projected along a desired path that has to be followed by the group. Such an approach provides non-collision solution and respects requirements of the direct visibility between the team members. The uninterrupted visibility is crucial for the employed top-view localization and therefore for the stabilization of the group. The proposed formation driving method and the fault recovery mechanisms are verified by simulations and hardware experiments presented in the paper

    Decentralized Motion Planning with Collision Avoidance for a Team of UAVs under High Level Goals

    This paper addresses the motion planning problem for a team of aerial agents under high level goals. We propose a hybrid control strategy that guarantees the accomplishment of each agent's local goal specification, which is given as a temporal logic formula, while guaranteeing inter-agent collision avoidance. In particular, by defining 3-D spheres that bound the agents' volume, we extend previous work on decentralized navigation functions and propose control laws that navigate the agents among predefined regions of interest of the workspace while avoiding collision with each other. This allows us to abstract the motion of the agents as finite transition systems and, by employing standard formal verification techniques, to derive a high-level control algorithm that satisfies the agents' specifications.     UAV Optimal Cooperative Obstacle Avoidance and Target Tracking in Dynamic Stochastic Environments

    Cette thÚse propose une stratégie de contrÎle avancée pour guider une flotte d'aéronefs sans pilote (UAV) dans un environnement à la fois stochastique et dynamique. Pour ce faire, un simulateur de vol 3D a été développé avec MATLABŸ pour tester les algorithmes de la stratégie de guidage en fonctions de différents scénarios. L'objectif des missions simulées est de s'assurer que chaque UAV intercepte une cible ellipsoïdale mobile tout en évitant une panoplie d'obstacles ellipsoïdaux mobiles détectés en route. Les UAVs situés à l'intérieur des limites de communication peuvent coopérer afin d'améliorer leurs performances au cours de la mission. Le simulateur a été conçu de façon à ce que les UAV soient dotés de capteurs et d'appareils de communication de portée limitée. De plus, chaque UAV possÚde un pilote automatique qui stabilise l'aéronef en vol et un planificateur de trajectoires qui génÚre les commandes à envoyer au pilote automatique. Au coeur du planificateur de trajectoires se trouve un contrÎleur prédictif à horizon fuyant qui détermine les commandes à envoyer à l'UAV. Ces commandes optimisent un critÚre de performance assujetti à des contraintes. Le critÚre de performance est conçu de sorte que les UAV atteignent les objectifs de la mission, alors que les contraintes assurent que les commandes générées adhÚrent aux limites de manoeuvrabilité de l'aéronef. La planification de trajectoires pour UAV opérant dans un environnement dynamique et stochastique dépend fortement des déplacements anticipés des objets (obstacle, cible). Un filtre de Kalman étendu est donc utilisé pour prédire les trajectoires les plus probables des objets à partir de leurs états estimés. Des stratégies de poursuite et d'évitement ont aussi été développées en fonction des trajectoires prédites des objets détectés. Pour des raisons de sécurité, la conception de stratégies d'évitement de collision à la fois efficaces et robustes est primordiale au guidage d'UAV. Une nouvelle stratégie d'évitement d'obstacles par approche probabiliste a donc été développée. La méthode cherche à minimiser la probabilité de collision entre l'UAV et tous ses obstacles détectés sur l'horizon de prédiction, tout en s'assurant que, à chaque pas de prédiction, la probabilité de collision entre l'UAV et chacun de ses obstacles détectés ne surpasse pas un seuil prescrit. Des simulations sont présentées au cours de cette thÚse pour démontrer l'efficacité des algorithmes proposés
