    OSCAR: an optimized stall-cautious adaptive bitrate streaming algorithm for mobile networks

    The design of an adaptive video client for mobile users is challenged by the frequent changes in operating conditions. Such conditions present a seemingly insurmountable challenge to adaptation algorithms, which may fail to find a balance between video rate, stalls, and rate-switching. In an effort to achieve the ideal balance, we design OSCAR, a novel adaptive streaming algorithm whose adaptation decisions are optimized to avoid stalls while maintaining high video quality. Our performance evaluation, using real video and channel traces from both 3G and 4G networks, shows that OSCAR achieves the highest percentage of stall-free sessions while maintaining a high quality video in comparison to the state-of-the-art algorithms

    Quality of experience and access network traffic management of HTTP adaptive video streaming

    The thesis focuses on Quality of Experience (QoE) of HTTP adaptive video streaming (HAS) and traffic management in access networks to improve the QoE of HAS. First, the QoE impact of adaptation parameters and time on layer was investigated with subjective crowdsourcing studies. The results were used to compute a QoE-optimal adaptation strategy for given video and network conditions. This allows video service providers to develop and benchmark improved adaptation logics for HAS. Furthermore, the thesis investigated concepts to monitor video QoE on application and network layer, which can be used by network providers in the QoE-aware traffic management cycle. Moreover, an analytic and simulative performance evaluation of QoE-aware traffic management on a bottleneck link was conducted. Finally, the thesis investigated socially-aware traffic management for HAS via Wi-Fi offloading of mobile HAS flows. A model for the distribution of public Wi-Fi hotspots and a platform for socially-aware traffic management on private home routers was presented. A simulative performance evaluation investigated the impact of Wi-Fi offloading on the QoE and energy consumption of mobile HAS.Die Doktorarbeit beschäftigt sich mit Quality of Experience (QoE) – der subjektiv empfundenen Dienstgüte – von adaptivem HTTP Videostreaming (HAS) und mit Verkehrsmanagement, das in Zugangsnetzwerken eingesetzt werden kann, um die QoE des adaptiven Videostreamings zu verbessern. Zuerst wurde der Einfluss von Adaptionsparameters und der Zeit pro Qualitätsstufe auf die QoE von adaptivem Videostreaming mittels subjektiver Crowdsourcingstudien untersucht. Die Ergebnisse wurden benutzt, um die QoE-optimale Adaptionsstrategie für gegebene Videos und Netzwerkbedingungen zu berechnen. Dies ermöglicht Dienstanbietern von Videostreaming verbesserte Adaptionsstrategien für adaptives Videostreaming zu entwerfen und zu benchmarken. Weiterhin untersuchte die Arbeit Konzepte zum Überwachen von QoE von Videostreaming in der Applikation und im Netzwerk, die von Netzwerkbetreibern im Kreislauf des QoE-bewussten Verkehrsmanagements eingesetzt werden können. Außerdem wurde eine analytische und simulative Leistungsbewertung von QoE-bewusstem Verkehrsmanagement auf einer Engpassverbindung durchgeführt. Schließlich untersuchte diese Arbeit sozialbewusstes Verkehrsmanagement für adaptives Videostreaming mittels WLAN Offloading, also dem Auslagern von mobilen Videoflüssen über WLAN Netzwerke. Es wurde ein Modell für die Verteilung von öffentlichen WLAN Zugangspunkte und eine Plattform für sozialbewusstes Verkehrsmanagement auf privaten, häuslichen WLAN Routern vorgestellt. Abschließend untersuchte eine simulative Leistungsbewertung den Einfluss von WLAN Offloading auf die QoE und den Energieverbrauch von mobilem adaptivem Videostreaming

    [ES] Esta tesis presenta diversas propuestas encaminadas a mejorar la transmisión de vídeo a través del estándar DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP). Este trabajo de investigación estudia el protocolo de transmisión DASH y sus características. A la vez, plantea la codificación con calidad constante y bitrate variable como modo de codificación del contenido de vídeo más indicado para la transmisión de contenido bajo demanda mediante el estándar DASH. Derivado de la propuesta de utilización del modo de codificación de calidad constante, cobra mayor importancia el papel que juegan los algoritmos de adaptación en la experiencia de los usuarios al consumir el contenido multimedia. En este sentido, esta tesis presenta un algoritmo de adaptación denominado Look Ahead el cual, sin modificar el estándar, permite utilizar la información de los tamaños de los segmentos de vídeo incluida en los contenedores multimedia para evitar tomar decisiones de adaptación que desemboquen en paradas no deseadas en la reproducción de contenido multimedia. Con el objetivo de evaluar las posibles mejoras del algoritmo de adaptación presentado, se proponen tres modelos de evaluación objetiva de la QoE. Los modelos propuestos permiten predecir de forma sencilla la QoE que tendrían los usuarios de forma objetiva, utilizando parámetros conocidos como el bitrate medio, el PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) y el valor de VMAF (Video Multimethod Assessment Fusion). Todos ellos aplicados a cada segmento. Finalmente, se estudia el comportamiento de DASH en entornos Wi-Fi con alta densidad de usuarios. En este contexto, se producen un número elevado de paradas en la reproducción por una mala estimación de la tasa de transferencia disponible debida al patrón ON/OFF de descarga de DASH y a la variabilidad del acceso al medio de Wi-Fi. Para paliar esta situación, se propone un servicio de coordinación basado en la tecnología SAND (MPEG's Server and Network Assisted DASH) que proporciona una estimación de la tasa de transferencia basada en la información del estado de los players de los clientes.[CA] Aquesta tesi presenta diverses propostes encaminades a millorar la transmissió de vídeo a través de l'estàndard DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP). Amb l'objectiu d'avaluar les possibles millores de l'algoritme d'adaptació presentat, es proposen tres models d'avaluació objectiva de la QoE. This research work studies the DASH transmission protocol and its characteristics. At the same time, this work proposes the use of encoding with constant quality and variable bitrate as the most suitable video content encoding mode for on-demand content transmission through the DASH standard. Based on the proposal to use the constant quality encoding mode, the role played by adaptation algorithms in the user experience when consuming multimedia content becomes more important. In this sense, this thesis presents an adaptation algorithm called Look Ahead which, without modifying the standard, allows the use of the information on the sizes of the video segments included in the multimedia containers to avoid making adaptation decisions that lead to undesirable stalls during the playback of multimedia content. In order to evaluate the improvements of the presented adaptation algorithm, three models of objective QoE evaluation are proposed. These models allow to predict in a simple way the QoE that users would have in an objective way, using well-known parameters such as the average bitrate, the PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) and the VMAF (Video Multimethod Assessment Fusion). All of them applied to each segment. Finally, the DASH behavior in Wi-Fi environments with high user density is analyzed. In this context, there could be a high number of stalls in the playback because of a bad estimation of the available transfer rate due to the ON/OFF pattern of DASH download and to the variability of the access to the Wi-Fi environment. To relieve this situation, a coordination service based on SAND (MPEG's Server and Network Assisted DASH) is proposed, which provides an estimation of the transfer rate based on the information of the state of the clients' players.Belda Ortega, R.     Enabling energy-awareness for internet video

    Continuous improvements to the state of the art have made it easier to create, send and receive vast quantities of video over the Internet. Catalysed by these developments, video is now the largest, and fastest growing type of traffic on modern IP networks. In 2015, video was responsible for 70% of all traffic on the Internet, with an compound annual growth rate of 27%. On the other hand, concerns about the growing energy consumption of ICT in general, continue to rise. It is not surprising that there is a significant energy cost associated with these extensive video usage patterns. In this thesis, I examine the energy consumption of typical video configurations during decoding (playback) and encoding through empirical measurements on an experimental test-bed. I then make extrapolations to a global scale to show the opportunity for significant energy savings, achievable by simple modifications to these video configurations. Based on insights gained from these measurements, I propose a novel, energy-aware Quality of Experience (QoE) metric for digital video - the Energy - Video Quality Index (EnVI). Then, I present and evaluate vEQ-benchmark, a benchmarking and measurement tool for the purpose of generating EnVI scores. The tool enables fine-grained resource-usage analyses on video playback systems, and facilitates the creation of statistical models of power usage for these systems. I propose GreenDASH, an energy-aware extension of the existing Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP standard (DASH). GreenDASH incorporates relevant energy-usage and video quality information into the existing standard. It could enable dynamic, energy-aware adaptation for video in response to energy-usage and user ‘green’ preferences. I also evaluate the subjective perception of such energy-aware, adaptive video streaming by means of a user study featuring 36 participants. I examine how video may be adapted to save energy without a significant impact on the Quality of Experience of these users. In summary, this thesis highlights the significant opportunities for energy savings if Internet users gain an awareness about their energy usage, and presents a technical discussion how this can be achieved by straightforward extensions to the current state of the art

    MediaSync: Handbook on Multimedia Synchronization

    This book provides an approachable overview of the most recent advances in the fascinating field of media synchronization (mediasync), gathering contributions from the most representative and influential experts. Understanding the challenges of this field in the current multi-sensory, multi-device, and multi-protocol world is not an easy task.
