The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly: Job Quality in the United States over the Three Most Recent Business Cycles

    Get PDF
This report finds that the US economy has created fewer good jobs in the 2000s than was the case over comparable periods in the 1980s and 1990s. The report analyzed annual data from the March Current Population Survey for the years 1979 through 2006 and shows that while the current business cycle has seen an increase in the share of jobs that pay at least $17 an hour, this gain has been more than offset by a decrease in the share of jobs that offer employer-provided health insurance (down 3.1 percent points) and pension coverage (down 4.9 percentage points)

Gamma-loud quasars: a view with BeppoSAX

    Get PDF
We present BeppoBeppoSAX observations of the γ\gamma -ray emitting quasars 0836+710, 1510-089 and 2230+114. All the objects have been detected in the PDS up to 100 keV and have extremely flat power-law spectra above 2 keV (αx\alpha _x=0.3--0.5). 0836+710 shows absorption higher than the galactic value and marginal evidence for the presence of the redshifted 6.4 keV Iron line. 1510-089 shows a spectral break around 1 keV, with the low energy spectrum steeper (αl\alpha_l=1.6) than the high energy power-law (αh\alpha_h=0.3). The data are discussed in the light of current Inverse Compton models for the high energy emission.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the proceedings of the conference "X-Ray Astronomy '99", Bologna, Italy, September 199

Physical properties of the jet in 0836+710 revealed by its transversal structure

Studying the internal structure of extragalactic jets is crucial for understanding their physics. The Japanese-led space VLBI project VSOP has presented an opportunity for such studies, by reaching baseline lengths of up to 36,000 km and resolving structures down to an angular size of 0.3\approx 0.3 mas at 5 GHz. VSOP observations of the jet in 0836+710 at 1.6 and 5 GHz have enabled tracing of the radial structure of the flow on scales from 2 mas to 200 mas along the jet and determination of the wavelengths of individual oscillatory modes responsible for the formation of the structure observed. We apply linear stability analysis to identify the oscillatory modes with modes of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability that match the wavelengths of the structures observed. We find that the jet structure in 0836+710 can be reproduced by the helical surface mode and a combination of the helical and elliptic body modes of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. Our results indicate that the jet is substantially stratified and different modes of the instability grow inside the jet at different distances to the jet axis. The helical surface mode can be driven externally, and we discuss the implications of the driving frequency on the physics of the active nucleus in 0836+710.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letter

A framework for working with digitized cultural heritage artefacts

    Get PDF
In this paper, we present our work in designing, implementing, and evaluating a set of 3D interactive spatial measurement tools in the context of Cultural Heritage Toolbox (CH Toolbox), a framework for computer-aided cultural heritage research. Our application utilizes a bi-manual, spaceball and mouse driven user interface to help the user manage visualized 3D models digitized from real artifacts. We have developed a virtual radius estimator, useful for analyzing incomplete pieces of radial artifacts, and a virtual tape measure, useful in measurement of geodesic distances between two points on the surface of an artifact. We tested the tools on the special case of pottery analysis

Carrier scattering approach to the origins of dark current in mid- and far-infrared (terahertz) quantum-well intersubband photodetectors (QWIPs)

    Get PDF
A carrier scattering approach is taken in an analysis of the affect on the dark current of extending the operating wavelength of conventional bound to continuum quantum-well intersubband photodetectors. It is found that both the sequential tunneling and the thermionic emission contributions to the dark current increase as the wavelength of the detector is extended from the mid- to far-infrared. Dark current designs rules are derived

The concept of disability discrimination and its legal construction

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to examine the key issues surrounding the legal construction of the concept of discrimination based on disability. This paper examines these issues in the context of the European Community’s framework directive on equal treatment in employment and occupation , in order to highlight the particular needs which must be addressed in developing laws to combat such discrimination. Where relevant, the paper contrasts the approach necessary for disability based discrimination with the traditional approach in relation to sex and race discrimination. The paper therefore examines the following areas: (i) the purpose of enacting non-discrimination laws in the context of disability; (ii) the definition of ‘disability’ as a ground of discrimination; (iii) the concepts of direct and indirect discrimination; and (iv) the duty to provide reasonable accommodations.</p
