Determination of pulsation periods and other parameters of 2875 stars classified as MIRA in the All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS)

We have developed an interactive PYTHON code and derived crucial ephemeris data of 99.4% of all stars classified as 'Mira' in the ASAS data base, referring to pulsation periods, mean maximum magnitudes and, whenever possible, the amplitudes among others. We present a statistical comparison between our results and those given by the AAVSO International Variable Star Index (VSX), as well as those determined with the machine learning automatic procedure of Richards et al. 2012. Our periods are in good agreement with those of the VSX in more than 95% of the stars. However, when comparing our periods with those of Richards et al, the coincidence rate is only 76% and most of the remaining cases refer to aliases. We conclude that automatic codes require still more refinements in order to provide reliable period values. Period distributions of the target stars show three local maxima around 215, 275 and 330 d, apparently of universal validity, their relative strength seems to depend on galactic longitude. Our visual amplitude distribution turns out to be bimodal, however 1/3 of the targets have rather small amplitudes (A $<$ 2.5$^{m}$) and could refer to semi-regular variables (SR). We estimate that about 20% of our targets belong to the SR class. We also provide a list of 63 candidates for period variations and a sample of 35 multiperiodic stars which seem to confirm the universal validity of typical sequences in the double period and in the Petersen diagramsComment: 14 pages, 14 figures, and 8 tables. A matrix isolation and computational study of molecular palladium fluorides : does PdF₆ exist?

Palladium atoms generated by thermal evaporation and laser ablation were reacted with and trapped in F₂ /Ar, F₂ /Ne, and neat F₂ matrices. The products were characterized by electronic absorption and infrared spectroscopy, together with relativistic density functional theory calculations as well as coupled cluster calculations. Vibrational modes at 540 and 617 cm⁻¹ in argon matrices were assigned to molecular PdF and PdF₂ , and a band at 692 cm⁻¹ was assigned to molecular PdF₄ . A band at 624 cm⁻¹ can be assigned to either PdF₃ or PdF₆, with the former preferred from experimental considerations. Although calculations might support the latter assignment, our conclusion is that in these detailed experiments there is no convincing evidence for PdF₆

Važnost upravljanja marketingom u globalnoj farmaceutskoj industriji

The world pharmaceutical industry has changed tremendously in the last decade. Globalization processes reinforce a consolidation of the world pharmaceutical industry. Mergers and acquisitions prevail more and more as a strategic orientation of numerous world pharmaceutical companies. In our research we found out that marketing management has been playing an increasingly important or even a crucial role in day-today activities and strategic business operations of the world pharmaceutical companies. We may point out that a rapid consolidation of the world pharmaceutical industry is definitely a market-driven process, one conditioned by typical strategic marketing management issues, such as a lack of brand new products, intense competitiveness, globalization processes, increased global marketing and sales activities, changing structure of global competitors as well as a furious fight for global market shares and customers’ loyalty. We estimate that marketing management is to play an even more important and, especially, the top priority strategic role in the future globalization and concentration processes of the world pharmaceutical industry. Some experiences and lessons from the global perspective of the world pharmaceutical industry could also be useful to the management of pharmaceutical companies in the transition countries of the Central and Eastern European region. Taking into consideration the current market position of these companies, some marketing management guidelines for their marketing management policies and strategies could be suggested. We conclude that underestimating, or even complete neglect of the importance of marketing management issues may pose the greatest threat to the future strategic orientation and performance of the world pharmaceutical industry.Svjetska farmaceutska industrija u posljednjem je desetljeću doživjela goleme promjene. Globalizacijski procesi potiču na konsolidaciju unutar ove industrije. Sve je više svjetskih farmaceutskih poduzeća koja se u svojoj strateškoj orijentaciji odlučuju za postupke spajanja i preuzimanja. Svojim istraživanjem otkrili smo da upravljanje marketingom igra sve važniju, čak i ključnu ulogu i u svakodnevnom i u strateškom poslovanju globalnih farmaceutskih poduzeća. Mogli bismo istaknuti da je ubrzana konsolidacija unutar svjetske farmaceutske industrije zasigurno proces koji potiče samo tržište, a uvjetuju ga pitanja koja su tipična za strateško upravljanje marketingom kao što su nedostatak novih proizvoda, jaka konkurencija, globalizacijski procesi, povećane aktivnosti na području globalnog marketinga i prodaje, promjenjiva struktura globalnih konkurenata i bespoštedna borba za udjele na globalnom tržištu i za vjernost kupaca. Procjenjujemo da će u budućim procesima globalizacije i koncentracije unutar svjetske farmaceutske industrije upravljanje marketingom imati još i važniju ulogu te postati najviši strateški prioritet. Neka iskustva i pouke iz globalne perspektive svjetske farmaceutske industrije mogli bi koristiti i menadžmentu farmaceutskih poduzeća u tranzicijskim zemljama Srednje i Istočne Europe. Imajući u vidu trenutni tržišni položaj tih poduzeća, mogu se predložiti stanovite smjernice za upravljanje marketingom u okviru njihovih politika i strategija upravljanja marketingom. Zaključujemo da najveća prijetnja budućoj strateškoj orijentaciji i uspjehu globalne farmaceutske industrije leži upravo u podcjenjivanju i potpunom zanemarivanju važnosti pitanja upravljanja marketingom

Influence of the Compaction Pressure and Sintering Temperature on the Mechanical Properties of Porous Titanium for Biomedical Applications

In the present work, the use of porous titanium is proposed as a solution to the difference in stiffness between the implant and bone tissue, avoiding the bone resorption. Conventional powder metallurgical technique is an industrially established route for fabrication of this type of material. The results are discussed in terms of the influence of compaction pressure and sintering temperature on the porosity (volumetric fraction, size, and morphology) and the quality of the sintering necks. A very good agreement between the predicted values obtained using a simple 2D finite element model, the experimental uniaxial compression behavior, and the analytical model proposed by Nielsen, has been found for both the Young’s modulus and the yield strength. The porous samples obtained by the loose sintering technique and using temperatures between 1000 °C −1100 °C (about 40% of total porosity) are recommended for achieving a suitable biomechanical behavior for cortical bone partial replacement.Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness of the State General Administration of Spain grant MAT2015-71284-

First principles lattice dynamics of NaCoO2_2

We report first principles linear response calculations on NaCoO$_2$. Phonon frequencies and eigenvectors are obtained throughout the Brillouin zone for two geometries with different Na site occupancies. While most of the phonon modes are found to be unsensitive to the Na site occupancy, there are two modes dominated by out-of-plane vibrations of Na giving very different frequencies for different geometries. One of these two modes, the A$_{2u}$ mode, is infrared-active, and can be used as a suitable sensor of Na distribution/ordering. The longitudinal-transverse splitting of the zone-center optical-mode frequencies, Born effective charges and the dielectric constants are also reported, showing considerable anisotropy. The calculated frequencies of Raman-active modes generally agree with the experimental values of corresponding Na de-intercalated and/or hydrated compounds, while it requires better experimental data to clarify the infrared-active mode frequencies.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure

EFFECTIVENESS OF ADJUVANT CHEMOTHERAPY AT TREATMENT OF MALIGNANT BREAST TUMORS IN BITCHES

У статті представлено результати моніторингових досліджень клінічного стану та виживання сук з неоплазіями молочної залози за проведення мастектомії як монотерапії, а також за застосування комплексного способу лікування – ексцизії пухлин та адювантної хіміотерапії. Встановлено, що за умови поєднання хірургічного видалення пухлин та хіміотерапії за схемою CVD (циклофосфан-вінкристин-дексаметазон) за лікування сук іззлоякісними пухлинами молочної залози вдається досягти не тільки ремісії захворювання на період до 18 місяців, а й покращення якості їх життя. Встановлено також, що виконання шести курсів ад’ювантної хіміотерапії за схемою CVD у сук проявляється допустимою побічною дією, що не перевищує II ступеня (за шкалою Національного інституту раку NCI CTC) гематологічної, гастроінтестинальної, гепато- та нефротоксичності. За результатами  хірургічного втручання й застосування цитостатичних препаратів порівняно із проведенням тільки оперативного видалення новоутворень, смертність тварин другої групи була нижчою на 8,6 % впродовж першого року й на 3,1 % – впродовж двох років спостережень. Медіана тривалості життя  першої групи  становила 12,5, другої – 17 місяців. В статье представлены результаты мониторинговых исследований клинического состояния и выживания сук с неоплазиями молочной железы при проведении мастектомии в качестве монотерапии, а также при применении комплексного способа лечения – эксцизии опухолей и адъювантной химиотерапии. Установлено, что при условии сочетания хирургического удаления опухолей и химиотерапии по схеме CVD (циклофосфан-винкристин-дексаметазон) при лечении сук со злокачественными опухолями молочной железы удается достичь не только ремиссии заболевания в период до 18 месяцев, но и улучшение качества их жизни. Установлено также, что выполнение шести курсов адъювантной химиотерапии по схеме CVD у сук проявляется допустимым побочным действием, не превышает II степени (по шкале Национального института рака NCI CTC) гематологической, гастроинтестинальной, гепато- и нефротоксичности. По результатам применения хирургического вмешательства и цитостатических препаратов, по сравнению с проведением только оперативного удаления новообразований, смертность животных во второй группе была ниже на 8,62 % в течение первого года и на 3,1 % в течение двух лет наблюдений. Медиана продолжительности жизни в первой группе составила 12,5 и во второй – 17 месяцев.The article deals with the results of monitoring search of clinical status and survival of cancer patients using complex treatments. It was established that in a combination of surgical removal of the tumor and chemotherapy with the scheme CVD (cyclophosphamide, vincristine, dexamethasone) for the treatment of bitches  which have  malignant tumors of the breast can achieve not only the remission of the disease during the period of  18 months, but also to improve the quality of their life. It was also set up that the implementation of six courses of adjuvant chemotherapy on a scheme CVD in bitches appears acceptable adverse effects not exceeding Grade II (on a scale of a National Cancer Institute NCI CTC) hematologic, gastrointestinal, hepato- and nephrotoxicity. As a result of the use of surgery and cytostatic drugs, compared with conducting only surgical extraction of tumors, mortality of animals in the second group was lower by 8,62 % in the first year and 3,1 % - during  two years of observations. The median lifetime  in the first group was 12,5 and the second - 17 months
