Electroweak corrections to top-quark pair production in quark--antiquark annihilation
Top-quark physics plays an important role at hadron colliders such as the
Tevatron at Fermilab or the LHC at CERN. Given the planned precision at these
colliders, precise theoretical predictions are required. In this paper we
present the complete electroweak corrections to QCD-induced top-quark pair
production in quark--antiquark annihilation. In particular we provide compact
analytic expressions for the differential partonic cross section, which will be
useful for further theoretical investigations
Community and Environmental OR: Towards a New Agenda
About the book: Community Operational Research: OR and Systems Thinking for Community Development sets out the current concerns of Community Operational Research (Community OR for short) and explores new possibilities for its continued development. Leading Community OR writers, with international reputations in operational research and systems thinking, have contributed chapters that illuminate different aspects of Community OR theory and practice. There is a focus on the value of systems approaches, and other significant perspectives are also represented. The result is a rich mix of theories, methodologies and case studies that will be a significant resource for both practitioners and academics engaged in community development
Steady as She Goes: State and Local Government Revenues and Spending in Oregon
State and local governments raise and spend money primarily to educate our children, keep our communities safe, arbitrate disputes through the courts, and provide health care and other services for our most vulnerable neighbors. In providing these and other services, Oregon state and local governments are not expecting more from Oregonians today than was expected a generation ago.Oregon's own-source general revenue has hovered around 15 percent of Oregonians' income over the last 25 years. Like revenue, spending by state and local governments in Oregon has risen in line with increases in the incomes of Oregonians. Since 1980, own-source state and local government general expenditures as a share of Oregonians' income have held steady, hovering around 15 percent, just as revenue has. This report explains these trends
Challenges Remain for Effective Growth of Nanotechnology Enabled Products
According to conclusions from the recent report by the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) the $12B NNI investment in nanotechnology since 2001 has provided a “catalytic and substantial impact.” Yet, with this positive assessment, significant challenges remain in order to stimulate sustainable economic impact and growth through commercialization of nanotechnologies. These challenges include workforce training and education while further balancing key issues of societal impact and worker safety through regulatory oversight. Several issues have recently been cited by industry groups, government organizations, and the PCAST report regarding regulation, workforce training, and effective commercialization of nanoscience breakthroughs that suggest a critical balance must be struck during the second decade of the NNI in order to optimally reap the benefits of federal investments. Flexural behavior of two-span continuous prestressed concrete girders with highly eccentric external tendors
[Abstract]: It is generally known that the flexural strength of beams prestressed with external tendons is comparatively lower than that of members with internal bonded tendons. One possible method of enhancing the flexural strength of such beams is to place the tendons at high eccentricity. To obtain an insight into the flexural behavior of beams with highly eccentric tendons, an experimental investigation is conducted on single-span and two-span continuous beams. The test variables include external tendon profile, loading pattern on each span, casting method, and confinement reinforcements. It is found that continuous girders with linearly transformed tendon profiles exhibit the same flexural behavior irrespective of tendon layout. The presence of confinement reinforcement enhances the ductility behavior but does not increase the ultimate flexural strength. The degree of moment redistribution is affected by the tendon layout and the loading pattern on each span. The results of the experimental investigation are discussed in this paper

A qualitative research study to explore young people's disengagement from learning
"The ‘One Wales’ agreement includes a commitment to establish an “enquiry into disengagement from learning amongst children and young people to look at evidence of what works”. In response, a research project was commissioned to investigate young people’s experience and perspectives on their disengagement from learning. The research fills an evidence gap on personal accounts of disengagement from young people in Wales. As such it therefore represents a useful source of information to support the review of young people who are not in education employment or training (NEET)." - Welsh Assembly Government website
Bringing Families In: Recommendations of the Incarceration, Reentry and Family Roundtables
Building on the findings of the New Jersey Reentry Roundtable and a growing concern around the state about how to improve outcomes for the more than 70,000 individuals expected to return home from prison over the next five years, the roundtable examined the complex role that families – broadly defined – play in the lives of prisoners during incarceration and after their release. This document presents a set of recommendations emerging directly from roundtable sessions and provides a road map for individual and collaborative efforts accepted by a range of key players in New Jersey, including government officials, community and faith based service agencies, advocacy groups, family members and formerly incarcerated people
