We experimentally demonstrate an NFDM optical system with modulation over nonlinear discrete spectrum. Particularly, each symbol carries 4-bits from multiplexing two eigenvalues modulated by QPSK constellation. We show a low error performance using NFT detection with 4Gbps rate over 640km.Comment: Will be presented in ECOC 2015, Sept. 201

Does the Cross-Talk Between Nonlinear Modes Limit the Performance of NFDM Systems?

We show a non-negligible cross-talk between nonlinear modes in Nonlinear Frequency-Division Multiplexed system when data is modulated over the nonlinear Fourier spectrum, both the continuous spectrum and the discrete spectrum, and transmitted over a lumped amplified fiber link. We evaluate the performance loss if the cross-talks are neglected.Comment: Invited paper, European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC 2017), Sept. 2017, p. Th.1.D.

Solitons are stable pulse shapes, which propagate linearly and maintain their shape despite the highly nonlinear fiber optical channel. A challenge in the use of these signal pulses in optical data transmission is to multiplex them with high efficiency. One way to multiplex many solitons is the nonlinear Fourier transform (NFT). With the help of the NFT, signal spectra can be calculated which propagate linearly through a nonlinear channel. Thus, in perspective, it is possible to perform linear transmissions even in highly nonlinear regions with high signal power levels. The NFT decomposes a signal into a dispersive and a solitonic part. The dispersive part is similar to spectra of the conventional linear Fourier transform and dominates especially at low signal powers. As soon as the total power of a signal exceeds a certain limit, solitons arise. A disadvantage of solitons generated digitally by the NFT is their complex shape due to, for example, high electrical bandwidths or a poor peak-to-average power ratio. In the course of this work, a scalable system architecture of a photonic integrated circuit based on a silicon chip was designed, which allows to multiplex several simple solitons tightly together to push the complex electrical generation of higher order solitons into the optical domain. This photonic integrated circuit was subsequently designed and fabricated by the Institute of Integrated Photonics at RWTH Aachen University. Using this novel system architecture and additional equalization concepts designed in this work, soliton transmissions with up to four channels could be successfully realized over more than 5000 km with a very high spectral efficiency of 0.5 b/s/Hz in the soliton range

Nonlinear Fourier transform (NFT) and eigenvalue communication with the use of nonlinear signal spectrum (both discrete and continuous), have been recently discussed as promising transmission methods to combat fiber nonlinearity impairments. In this paper, for the first time, we demonstrate the generation, detection and transmission performance over transoceanic distances of 10 Gbaud and nonlinear inverse synthesis (NIS) based signal (4 Gb/s line rate), in which the transmitted information is encoded directly onto the continuous part of the signal nonlinear spectrum. By applying effective digital signal processing techniques, a reach of 7344 km was achieved with a bit-error-rate (BER) (2.1Ă—10-2) below the 20% FEC threshold. This represents an improvement by a factor of ~12 in data capacity x distance product compared with other previously demonstrated NFT-based systems, showing a significant advance in the active research area of NFT-based communication systems

    Linear and Nonlinear Frequency-Division Multiplexing

Two signal multiplexing schemes for optical fiber communication are considered: Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and nonlinear frequency-division multiplexing (NFDM), based on the nonlinear Fourier transform. Achievable information rates (AIRs) of NFDM and WDM are compared in a network scenario with an ideal lossless model of the optical fiber in the defocusing regime. It is shown that the NFDM AIR is greater than the WDM AIR subject to a bandwidth and average power constraint, in a representative system with one symbol per user. The improvement results from nonlinear signal multiplexing

Coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) has been actively considered as a potential candidate for long-haul transmission and 400 Gb/s to 1 Tb/s Ethernet transport because of its high spectral efficiency, efficient implementation, flexibility and robustness against linear impairments such as chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion. However, due to the long symbol duration and narrow subcarrier spacing, CO-OFDM systems are sensitive to laser phase noise and fibre nonlinearity induced penalties. As a result, the development of CO-OFDM transmission technology crucially relies on efficient techniques to compensate for the laser phase noise and fibre nonlinearity impairments. In this thesis, high performance and low complexity digital signal processing techniques for laser phase noise and fibre nonlinearity compensation in CO-OFDM transmissions are demonstrated. For laser phase noise compensation, three novel techniques, namely quasipilot-aided, decision-directed-free blind and multiplier-free blind are introduced. For fibre nonlinear compensation, two novel techniques which are referred to as phase conjugated pilots and phase conjugated subcarrier coding, are proposed. All these abovementioned digital signal processing techniques offer high performances and flexibilities while requiring relatively low complexities in comparison with other existing phase noise and nonlinear compensation techniques. As a result of the developments of these digital signal processing techniques, CO-OFDM technology is expected to play a significant role in future ultra-high capacity optical network. In addition, this thesis also presents preliminary study on nonlinear Fourier transform based transmission schemes in which OFDM is a highly suitable modulation format. The obtained result paves the way towards a truly flexible nonlinear wave-division multiplexing system that allows the current nonlinear transmission limitations to be exceeded

Nonlinear Fourier transform for optical data processing and transmission:advances and perspectives

Fiber-optic communication systems are nowadays facing serious challenges due to the fast growing demand on capacity from various new applications and services. It is now well recognized that nonlinear effects limit the spectral efficiency and transmission reach of modern fiber-optic communications. Nonlinearity compensation is therefore widely believed to be of paramount importance for increasing the capacity of future optical networks. Recently, there has been steadily growing interest in the application of a powerful mathematical tool-the nonlinear Fourier transform (NFT)-in the development of fundamentally novel nonlinearity mitigation tools for fiber-optic channels. It has been recognized that, within this paradigm, the nonlinear crosstalk due to the Kerr effect is effectively absent, and fiber nonlinearity due to the Kerr effect can enter as a constructive element rather than a degrading factor. The novelty and the mathematical complexity of the NFT, the versatility of the proposed system designs, and the lack of a unified vision of an optimal NFT-type communication system, however, constitute significant difficulties for communication researchers. In this paper, we therefore survey the existing approaches in a common framework and review the progress in this area with a focus on practical implementation aspects. First, an overview of existing key algorithms for the efficacious computation of the direct and inverse NFT is given, and the issues of accuracy and numerical complexity are elucidated. We then describe different approaches for the utilization of the NFT in practical transmission schemes. After that we discuss the differences, advantages, and challenges of various recently emerged system designs employing the NFT, as well as the spectral efficiency estimates available up-to-date. With many practical implementation aspects still being open, our mini-review is aimed at helping researchers assess the perspectives, understand the bottlenecks, and envision the development paths in the upcoming NFT-based transmission technologies
