A Study of Coaxial Rotor Performance and Flow Field Characteristics

    Get PDF
As a precursor to studying the acoustics of a coaxial rotor system, the aerodynamics and flow field of a coaxial rotor were simulated to better understand the interaction between the two rotors. RotUNS, an unsteady Navier-Stokes solver that uses a simplified blade aerodynamics model, was used to predict coaxial rotor performance in hover and forward flight. RotUNS steady hover calculations showed improved performance compared to blade element momentum theory. Prior to examining the complex 3D flow field of a coaxial rotor in detail, two airfoils traveling in opposite directions with a vertical separation distance equivalent to the separation between the upper and lower rotor of the coaxial system were simulated. The pressure field generated by the two airfoils aided our interpretation of the more complex coaxial rotor system flow field. The pressure fields above, between, and below the coaxial rotor system were then examined for different azimuth positions of the upper and lower rotor blades

The State of the Art in Multilayer Network Visualization

Modelling relationships between entities in real-world systems with a simple graph is a standard approach. However, reality is better embraced as several interdependent subsystems (or layers). Recently the concept of a multilayer network model has emerged from the field of complex systems. This model can be applied to a wide range of real-world datasets. Examples of multilayer networks can be found in the domains of life sciences, sociology, digital humanities and more. Within the domain of graph visualization there are many systems which visualize datasets having many characteristics of multilayer graphs. This report provides a state of the art and a structured analysis of contemporary multilayer network visualization, not only for researchers in visualization, but also for those who aim to visualize multilayer networks in the domain of complex systems, as well as those developing systems across application domains. We have explored the visualization literature to survey visualization techniques suitable for multilayer graph visualization, as well as tools, tasks, and analytic techniques from within application domains. This report also identifies the outstanding challenges for multilayer graph visualization and suggests future research directions for addressing them

Coin Sampling: Gradient-Based Bayesian Inference without Learning Rates

In recent years, particle-based variational inference (ParVI) methods such as Stein variational gradient descent (SVGD) have grown in popularity as scalable methods for Bayesian inference. Unfortunately, the properties of such methods invariably depend on hyperparameters such as the learning rate, which must be carefully tuned by the practitioner in order to ensure convergence to the target measure at a suitable rate. In this paper, we introduce a suite of new particle-based methods for scalable Bayesian inference based on coin betting, which are entirely learning-rate free. We illustrate the performance of our approach on a range of numerical examples, including several high-dimensional models and datasets, demonstrating comparable performance to other ParVI algorithms with no need to tune a learning rate.Comment: ICML 202

NEID Rossiter–McLaughlin Measurement of TOI-1268b: A Young Warm Saturn Aligned with Its Cool Host Star

Close-in gas giants present a surprising range of stellar obliquity, the angle between a planet's orbital axis and its host star's spin axis. It is unclear whether the obliquities reflect the planets' dynamical history (e.g., aligned for in situ formation or disk migration versus misaligned for high-eccentricity tidal migration) or whether other mechanisms (e.g., primordial misalignment or planet-star interactions) are more important in sculpting the obliquity distribution. Here we present the stellar obliquity measurement of TOI-1268 (TIC-142394656, V mag ∼10.9), a young K-type dwarf hosting an 8.2 day period, Saturn-sized planet. TOI-1268's lithium abundance and rotation period suggest the system age between the ages of the Pleiades cluster (∼120 Myr) and the Prasepe cluster (∼670 Myr). Using the newly commissioned NEID spectrograph, we constrain the stellar obliquity of TOI-1268 via the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect from both radial velocity and Doppler tomography signals. The 3σ upper bounds of the projected stellar obliquity λ from both models are below 60°. The large host star separation (a/R ∗ ∼17), combined with the system's young age, makes it unlikely that the planet has realigned its host star. The stellar obliquity measurement of TOI-1268 probes the architecture of a young gas giant beyond the reach of tidal realignment (a/R ∗ ≲10) and reveals an aligned or slightly misaligned system

Power Consumption Analysis, Measurement, Management, and Issues:A State-of-the-Art Review of Smartphone Battery and Energy Usage

    Get PDF
The advancement and popularity of smartphones have made it an essential and all-purpose device. But lack of advancement in battery technology has held back its optimum potential. Therefore, considering its scarcity, optimal use and efficient management of energy are crucial in a smartphone. For that, a fair understanding of a smartphone's energy consumption factors is necessary for both users and device manufacturers, along with other stakeholders in the smartphone ecosystem. It is important to assess how much of the device's energy is consumed by which components and under what circumstances. This paper provides a generalized, but detailed analysis of the power consumption causes (internal and external) of a smartphone and also offers suggestive measures to minimize the consumption for each factor. The main contribution of this paper is four comprehensive literature reviews on: 1) smartphone's power consumption assessment and estimation (including power consumption analysis and modelling); 2) power consumption management for smartphones (including energy-saving methods and techniques); 3) state-of-the-art of the research and commercial developments of smartphone batteries (including alternative power sources); and 4) mitigating the hazardous issues of smartphones' batteries (with a details explanation of the issues). The research works are further subcategorized based on different research and solution approaches. A good number of recent empirical research works are considered for this comprehensive review, and each of them is succinctly analysed and discussed
