    Prototyping a new car semi-active suspension by variational feedback controller

    New suspension systems electronically controlled are presented and mounted on board of a real car. The system consists of variable semi-active magneto-rheological dampers that are controlled through an electronic unit that is designed on the basis of a new optimal theoretical control, named VFC-Variational Feedback Controller. The system has been mounted on board of a BMW Series 1 car, and a set of experimental tests have been conducted in real driving conditions. The VFC reveals, because of its design strategy, to be able to enhance simultaneously both the comfort performance as well as the handling capability of the car. Preliminary comparisons with several industrially control methods adopted in the automotive field, among them skyhook and groundhook, show excellent results

    System design of a low-power three-axis underdamped MEMS accelerometer with simultaneous electrostatic damping control

    Recently, consumer electronics industry has known a spectacular growth that would have not been possible without pushing the integration barrier further and further. Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) inertial sensors (e.g. accelerometers, gyroscopes) provide high performance, low power, low die cost solutions and are, nowadays, embedded in most consumer applications. In addition, the sensors fusion has become a new trend and combo sensors are gaining growing popularity since the co-integration of a three-axis MEMS accelerometer and a three-axis MEMS gyroscope provides complete navigation information. The resulting device is an Inertial measurement unit (IMU) able to sense multiple Degrees of Freedom (DoF). Nevertheless, the performances of the accelerometers and the gyroscopes are conditioned by the MEMS cavity pressure: the accelerometer is usually a damped system functioning under an atmospheric pressure while the gyroscope is a highly resonant system. Thus, to conceive a combo sensor, aunique low cavity pressure is required. The integration of both transducers within the same low pressure cavity necessitates a method to control and reduce the ringing phenomena by increasing the damping factor of the MEMS accelerometer. Consequently, the aim of the thesis is the design of an analog front-end interface able to sense and control an underdamped three-axis MEMSaccelerometer. This work proposes a novel closed-loop accelerometer interface achieving low power consumption The design challenge consists in finding a trade-off between the sampling frequency, the settling time and the circuit complexity since the sensor excitation plates are multiplexed between the measurement and the damping phases. In this context, a patenteddamping sequence (simultaneous damping) has been conceived to improve the damping efficiency over the state of the art approach performances (successive damping). To investigate the feasibility of the novel electrostatic damping control architecture, several mathematical models have been developed and the settling time method is used to assess the damping efficiency. Moreover, a new method that uses the multirate signal processing theory and allows the system stability study has been developed. This very method is used to conclude on the loop stability for a certain sampling frequency and loop gain value.     Measurement of acceleration response functions with scalable low-cost devices. An application to the experimental modal analysis

    Producción CientíficaOne of the most popular options in the Structural Health Monitoring field is the tracking of the modal parameters, which are estimated through the frequency response functions of the structure, usually in the form of accelerances, which are computed as the ratio between the measured accelerations and the applied forces. This requires the use of devices capable of synchronously recording accelerations at several points of the structure at high sampling rates and the subsequent computational analysis using the recorded data. To this end, this work presents and validates a new scalable acquisition system based on multiple myRIO devices and digital MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) accelerometers, intended for modal analysis of large structures. A simple form of this system was presented by the authors in a previous work, showing that a single board with some accelerometers connected to it got to obtain high quality measurements in both time and frequency domains. Now, a larger system composed by several slave boards connected and synchronized to a master one is presented. Delays lower than 100 ns are found between the synchronised channels of the proposed system.     Bond graph simulation of error propagation in position estimation of a hydraulic cylinder using low cost accelerometers

    The indirect calculation from acceleration of transversal displacement of the piston inside the body of a double effect linear hydraulic cylinder during its operating cycle is assessed. Currently an extensive effort exists in the improvement of the mechanical and electronic design of the highly sophisticated MEMS accelerometers. Nevertheless, the predictable presence of measurement errors in the current commercial accelerometers is the main origin of velocity and displacement measurement deviations during integration of the acceleration. A bond graph numerical simulation model of the electromechanical system has been developed in order to forecast the effect of several measurement errors in the use of low cost two axes accelerometers. The level of influence is assessed using quality indicators and visual signal evaluation, for both simulations and experimental results. The obtained displacements results are highly influenced by the diverse dynamic characteristics of each measuring axis. The small measuring errors of a simulated extremely high performance sensor generate only moderate effects in longitudinal displacement but deep deviations in the reconstruction of piston transversal movements. The bias error has been identified as the source of the higher deviations of displacement results; although, its consequences can be easily corrected.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Programmable low-power low-noise capacitance to voltage converter for MEMS accelerometers

    In this work, we present a capacitance-to-voltage converter (CVC) for capacitive accelerometers based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Based on a fully-differential transimpedance amplifier (TIA), it features a 34-dB transimpedance gain control and over one decade programmable bandwidth, from 75 kHz to 1.2 MHz. The TIA is aimed for low-cost low-power capacitive sensor applications. It has been designed in a standard 0.18-µm CMOS technology and its power consumption is only 54 µW. At the maximum transimpedance configuration, the TIA shows an equivalent input noise of 42 fA/vHz at 50 kHz, which corresponds to 100 µg/vHz

    Capacitive Microaccelerometers And Fabrication Methods

    Disclosed are moveable microstructures comprising in-plane capacitive microaccelerometers, with submicro-gravity resolution (17 pF/g). Themicrostructures are fabricated in thick(> 100 µm) siliconon-insulator (SOI) substrates or silicon substrates using a two-mask fully-dry release process that provides large seismic mass (> 10 milli-g), reduced capacitive gaps, and reduced in-plane stiffness. Fabricated devices may be interfaced to a high resolution switched-capacitor CMOS IC that eliminates the need for area-consuming reference capacitors. The measured sensitivity is 83 mV/mg (17 pF/g) and the output noise floor is -91 dBm/Hz at 10 Hz (corresponding to an acceleration resolution of 170 ng/√Hz).     Dynamic Assessment of Masonry Towers Based on Terrestrial Radar Interferometer and Accelerometers

    This paper discusses the performance of a terrestrial radar interferometer for the structural monitoring of ancient masonry towers. High-speed radar interferometry is an innovative and powerful remote sensing technique for the dynamic monitoring of large structures since it is contactless, non-destructive, and able to measure fast displacements on the order of tenths of millimeters. This methodology was tested on a masonry tower of great historical interest, the Saint Prospero bell tower (Northern Italy). To evaluate the quality of the results, data collected from the interferometer were compared and validated with those provided by two types of accelerometer-based measuring systems directly installed on the tower. Dynamic tests were conducted in operational conditions as well as during a bell concert. The first aimed at characterizing the dynamic behavior of the tower, while the second allowed to evaluate the bell swinging effects. Results showed a good agreement among the different measuring systems and demonstrated the potential of the radar interferometry for the dynamic monitoring of structures, with special focus on the need for an accurate design of the geometric aspects of the surveys

    A magneto-mechanical accelerometer based on magnetic tunnel junctions

    Accelerometers have widespread applications and are an essential component in many areas such as automotive, consumer electronics and industrial applications. Most commercial accelerometers are based on micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) that are limited in downscaling and power consumption. Spintronics-based accelerometers have been proposed as alternatives, however, current proposals suffer from design limitations that result in reliability issues and high cost. Here we propose spintronic accelerometers with magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) as building block, which map accelerations into a measurable voltage across the MTJ terminals. The device exploits elastic and dipolar coupling as a sensing mechanism and the spintronic diode effect for the direct read out of the acceleration. The proposed technology represents a potentially competitive and scalable solution to current capacitive MEMS-based approaches that could lead to a step forward in many of the commercial applications.Comment: main document with 4 figures + supplemental informatio

    Sensing Movement: Microsensors for Body Motion Measurement

    Recognition of body posture and motion is an important physiological function that can keep the body in balance. Man-made motion sensors have also been widely applied for a broad array of biomedical applications including diagnosis of balance disorders and evaluation of energy expenditure. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art sensing components utilized for body motion measurement. The anatomy and working principles of a natural body motion sensor, the human vestibular system, are first described. Various man-made inertial sensors are then elaborated based on their distinctive sensing mechanisms. In particular, both the conventional solid-state motion sensors and the emerging non solid-state motion sensors are depicted. With their lower cost and increased intelligence, man-made motion sensors are expected to play an increasingly important role in biomedical systems for basic research as well as clinical diagnostics

    MACHINE LEARNING AUGMENTATION MICRO-SENSORS FOR SMART DEVICE APPLICATIONS

    Novel smart technologies such as wearable devices and unconventional robotics have been enabled by advancements in semiconductor technologies, which have miniaturized the sizes of transistors and sensors. These technologies promise great improvements to public health. However, current computational paradigms are ill-suited for use in novel smart technologies as they fail to meet their strict power and size requirements. In this dissertation, we present two bio-inspired colocalized sensing-and-computing schemes performed at the sensor level: continuous-time recurrent neural networks (CTRNNs) and reservoir computers (RCs). These schemes arise from the nonlinear dynamics of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), which facilitates computing, and the inherent ability of MEMS devices for sensing. Furthermore, this dissertation addresses the high-voltage requirements in electrostatically actuated MEMS devices using a passive amplification scheme. The CTRNN architecture is emulated using a network of bistable MEMS devices. This bistable behavior is shown in the pull-in, the snapthrough, and the feedback regimes, when excited around the electrical resonance frequency. In these regimes, MEMS devices exhibit key behaviors found in biological neuronal populations. When coupled, networks of MEMS are shown to be successful at classification and control tasks. Moreover, MEMS accelerometers are shown to be successful at acceleration waveform classification without the need for external processors. MEMS devices are additionally shown to perform computing by utilizing the RC architecture. Here, a delay-based RC scheme is studied, which uses one MEMS device to simulate the behavior of a large neural network through input modulation. We introduce a modulation scheme that enables colocalized sensing-and-computing by modulating the bias signal. The MEMS RC is tested to successfully perform pure computation and colocalized sensing-and-computing for both classification and regression tasks, even in noisy environments. Finally, we address the high-voltage requirements of electrostatically actuated MEMS devices by proposing a passive amplification scheme utilizing the mechanical and electrical resonances of MEMS devices simultaneously. Using this scheme, an order-of-magnitude of amplification is reported. Moreover, when only electrical resonance is used, we show that the MEMS device exhibits a computationally useful bistable response. Adviser: Dr. Fadi Alsalee
