From on-line sketching to 2D and 3D geometry: A fuzzy knowledge based system
The paper describes the development of a fuzzy knowledge based prototype system for conceptual design. This real time system is designed to infer user’s sketching intentions, to segment sketched input and generate corresponding geometric primitives: straight lines, circles, arcs, ellipses, elliptical arcs, and B-spline curves. Topology information (connectivity, unitary constraints and pairwise constraints) is received dynamically from 2D sketched input and primitives. From the 2D topology information, a more accurate 2D geometry can be built up by applying a 2D geometric constraint solver. Subsequently, 3D geometry can be received feature by feature incrementally. Each feature can be recognised by inference knowledge in terms of matching its 2D primitive configurations and connection relationships. The system accepts not only sketched input, working as an automatic design tools, but also accepts user’s interactive input of both 2D primitives and special positional 3D primitives. This makes it easy and friendly to use. The system has been tested with a number of sketched inputs of 2D and 3D geometry

Interpretation of overtracing freehand sketching for geometric shapes
This paper presents a novel method for interpreting overtracing freehand sketch. The overtracing strokes are interpreted as sketch content and are used to generate 2D geometric primitives. The approach consists of four stages: stroke classification, strokes grouping and fitting, 2D tidy-up with endpoint clustering and parallelism correction, and in-context interpretation. Strokes are first classified into lines and curves by a linearity test. It is followed by an innovative strokes grouping process that handles lines and curves separately. The grouped strokes are fitted with 2D geometry and further tidied-up with endpoint clustering and parallelism correction.
Finally, the in-context interpretation is applied to detect incorrect stroke interpretation based on geometry constraints and to suggest a most plausible correction based on the overall sketch context. The interpretation ensures sketched strokes to be interpreted into meaningful output. The interface overcomes the limitation where only a single line drawing can be sketched out as in most existing sketching programs, meanwhile is more intuitive to the user
Sketching space
In this paper, we present a sketch modelling system which we call Stilton. The program resembles a desktop VRML browser, allowing a user to navigate a three-dimensional model in a perspective projection, or panoramic photographs, which the program maps onto the scene as a `floor' and `walls'. We place an imaginary two-dimensional drawing plane in front of the user, and any geometric information that user sketches onto this plane may be reconstructed to form solid objects through an optimization process. We show how the system can be used to reconstruct geometry from panoramic images, or to add new objects to an existing model. While panoramic imaging can greatly assist with some aspects of site familiarization and qualitative assessment of a site, without the addition of some foreground geometry they offer only limited utility in a design context. Therefore, we suggest that the system may be of use in `just-in-time' CAD recovery of complex environments, such as shop floors, or construction sites, by recovering objects through sketched overlays, where other methods such as automatic line-retrieval may be impossible. The result of using the system in this manner is the `sketching of space' - sketching out a volume around the user - and once the geometry has been recovered, the designer is free to quickly sketch design ideas into the newly constructed context, or analyze the space around them. Although end-user trials have not, as yet, been undertaken we believe that this implementation may afford a user-interface that is both accessible and robust, and that the rapid growth of pen-computing devices will further stimulate activity in this area
Intelligent computational sketching support for conceptual design
Sketches, with their flexibility and suggestiveness, are in many ways ideal for expressing emerging design concepts. This can be seen from the fact that the process of representing early designs by free-hand drawings was used as far back as in the early 15th century [1]. On the other hand, CAD systems have become widely accepted as an essential design tool in recent years, not least because they provide a base on which design analysis can be carried out. Efficient transfer of sketches into a CAD representation, therefore, is a powerful addition to the designers' armoury.It has been pointed out by many that a pen-on-paper system is the best tool for sketching. One of the crucial requirements of a computer aided sketching system is its ability to recognise and interpret the elements of sketches. 'Sketch recognition', as it has come to be known, has been widely studied by people working in such fields: as artificial intelligence to human-computer interaction and robotic vision. Despite the continuing efforts to solve the problem of appropriate conceptual design modelling, it is difficult to achieve completely accurate recognition of sketches because usually sketches implicate vague information, and the idiosyncratic expression and understanding differ from each designer
Vision, Action, and Make-Perceive
In this paper, I critically assess the enactive account of visual perception recently defended by Alva Noë (2004). I argue inter alia that the enactive account falsely identifies an object’s apparent shape with its 2D perspectival shape; that it mistakenly assimilates visual shape perception and volumetric object recognition; and that it seriously misrepresents the constitutive role of bodily action in visual awareness. I argue further that noticing an object’s perspectival shape involves a hybrid experience combining both perceptual and imaginative elements – an act of what I call ‘make-perceive.
Automatic Structural Scene Digitalization
In this paper, we present an automatic system for the analysis and labeling
of structural scenes, floor plan drawings in Computer-aided Design (CAD)
format. The proposed system applies a fusion strategy to detect and recognize
various components of CAD floor plans, such as walls, doors, windows and other
ambiguous assets. Technically, a general rule-based filter parsing method is
fist adopted to extract effective information from the original floor plan.
Then, an image-processing based recovery method is employed to correct
information extracted in the first step. Our proposed method is fully automatic
and real-time. Such analysis system provides high accuracy and is also
evaluated on a public website that, on average, archives more than ten
thousands effective uses per day and reaches a relatively high satisfaction

Multi-view Convolutional Neural Networks for 3D Shape Recognition
A longstanding question in computer vision concerns the representation of 3D
shapes for recognition: should 3D shapes be represented with descriptors
operating on their native 3D formats, such as voxel grid or polygon mesh, or
can they be effectively represented with view-based descriptors? We address
this question in the context of learning to recognize 3D shapes from a
collection of their rendered views on 2D images. We first present a standard
CNN architecture trained to recognize the shapes' rendered views independently
of each other, and show that a 3D shape can be recognized even from a single
view at an accuracy far higher than using state-of-the-art 3D shape
descriptors. Recognition rates further increase when multiple views of the
shapes are provided. In addition, we present a novel CNN architecture that
combines information from multiple views of a 3D shape into a single and
compact shape descriptor offering even better recognition performance. The same
architecture can be applied to accurately recognize human hand-drawn sketches
of shapes. We conclude that a collection of 2D views can be highly informative
for 3D shape recognition and is amenable to emerging CNN architectures and

A conceptual design tool: Sketch and fuzzy logic based system
A real time sketch and fuzzy logic based prototype system for conceptual design has been developed. This system comprises four phases. In the first one, the system accepts the input of on-line free-hand sketches, and segments them into meaningful parts by using fuzzy knowledge to detect corners and inflection points on the sketched curves. The fuzzy knowledge is applied to capture user’s drawing intention in terms of sketching position, direction, speed and acceleration. During the second phase, each segmented sub-part (curve) can be classified and identified as one of the following 2D primitives: straight lines, circles, circular arcs, ellipses, elliptical arcs or B-spline curves. Then, 2D topology information (connectivity, unitary constraints and pairwise constraints) is extracted dynamically from the identified 2D primitives. From the extracted information, a more accurate 2D geometry can be built up by a 2D geometric constraint solver. The 2D topology and geometry information is then employed to further interpretation of a 3D geometry. The system can not only accept sketched input, but also users’ interactive input of 2D and 3D primitives.
This makes it friendly and easier to use, in comparison with ‘sketched input only’, or ‘interactive input only’ systems.
