Chinese-Catalan: A neural machine translation approach based on pivoting and attention mechanisms
This article innovatively addresses machine translation from Chinese to Catalan using neural pivot strategies trained without any direct parallel data. The Catalan language is very similar to Spanish from a linguistic point of view, which motivates the use of Spanish as pivot language. Regarding neural architecture, we are using the latest state-of-the-art, which is the Transformer model, only based on attention mechanisms. Additionally, this work provides new resources to the community, which consists of a human-developed gold standard of 4,000 sentences between Catalan and Chinese and all the others United Nations official languages (Arabic, English, French, Russian, and Spanish). Parameterized Compilation Lower Bounds for Restricted CNF-formulas
We show unconditional parameterized lower bounds in the area of knowledge
compilation, more specifically on the size of circuits in decomposable negation
normal form (DNNF) that encode CNF-formulas restricted by several graph width
measures. In particular, we show that
- there are CNF formulas of size and modular incidence treewidth
whose smallest DNNF-encoding has size , and
- there are CNF formulas of size and incidence neighborhood diversity
whose smallest DNNF-encoding has size .
These results complement recent upper bounds for compiling CNF into DNNF and
strengthen---quantitatively and qualitatively---known conditional low\-er
bounds for cliquewidth. Moreover, they show that, unlike for many graph
problems, the parameters considered here behave significantly differently from
treewidth
More cat than cute? Interpretable Prediction of Adjective-Noun Pairs
The increasing availability of affect-rich multimedia resources has bolstered
interest in understanding sentiment and emotions in and from visual content.
Adjective-noun pairs (ANP) are a popular mid-level semantic construct for
capturing affect via visually detectable concepts such as "cute dog" or
"beautiful landscape". Current state-of-the-art methods approach ANP prediction
by considering each of these compound concepts as individual tokens, ignoring
the underlying relationships in ANPs. This work aims at disentangling the
contributions of the `adjectives' and `nouns' in the visual prediction of ANPs.
Two specialised classifiers, one trained for detecting adjectives and another
for nouns, are fused to predict 553 different ANPs. The resulting ANP
prediction model is more interpretable as it allows us to study contributions
of the adjective and noun components. Source code and models are available at

Multi-Agent Epistemic Logic has been investigated in Computer Science [Fagin, R., J. Halpern, Y. Moses and M. Managing data through the lens of an ontology
Ontology-based data management aims at managing data through the lens of an ontology, that is, a conceptual representation of the domain of interest in the underlying information system. This new paradigm provides several interesting features, many of which have already been proved effective in managing complex information systems. This article introduces the notion of ontology-based data management, illustrating the main ideas underlying the paradigm, and pointing out the importance of knowledge representation and automated reasoning for addressing the technical challenges it introduces
Industrial Symbiotic Networks as Coordinated Games
We present an approach for implementing a specific form of collaborative
industrial practices-called Industrial Symbiotic Networks (ISNs)-as MC-Net
cooperative games and address the so called ISN implementation problem. This
is, the characteristics of ISNs may lead to inapplicability of fair and stable
benefit allocation methods even if the collaboration is a collectively desired
one. Inspired by realistic ISN scenarios and the literature on normative
multi-agent systems, we consider regulations and normative socioeconomic
policies as two elements that in combination with ISN games resolve the
