    Experimental Performance Analysis of Routing Metrics in Wireless Mesh Networks

    International audienceThis paper provides a description of a wireless mesh network testbed setup and a measurement-based performance evaluation of the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol [7] under three different routing metrics. The considered metrics include hop-count, ETX and ETT. The network performances are evaluated in an indoor testbed formed by heterogeneous MIMO devices. A part of our tests was about the impact of 802.11n features on the network performances showing the importance of lower layers consideration. Our measurements point out the shortcoming of each metric and eventual optimizations towards a more efficient routing. Experimental results show that OLSRETT outperforms OLSR-ETX and OLSR-hopcount significantly in terms of packet loss, end-to-end delay, and efficiency

    Performance Evaluation of Energy Efficient Policies for Ethernet Switches

    International audienceEnergy efficiency has emerged as a defining scientific and engineering challenge of our time. Ethernet, as the dominant wireline technology, has been a focus of intense research and development efforts with the goal of significantly decreasing its energy consumption. In 2010 the IEEE Std 802.3az, which uses a Low Power Idle (LPI) mode to reduce the energy consumption of a link when there is no data traffic, was approved. Recently, the major manufacturers have brought to market the first switches the implement the new energy efficient standard. In this paper, we make use of the first generation of hardware that support the IEEE 802.3az to get a better understanding of the behavior of energy efficient mechanisms for ethernet. Based on measurement on DLINK switches that are IEEE 802.3az compliant, we build a power model that reflects more accurately the power used by real hardware in practice. We use the measurement-driven power model to analyze the behavior of Lazy Start, the state of the art algorithm for energy efficient ethernet, in the ns-3 simulator. Based on our analysis, we provide recommendations for improvements and potential directions for future work

    Prediction Approach of Critical Node Based on Multiple Attribute Decision Making for Opportunistic Sensor Networks

    Predicting critical nodes of Opportunistic Sensor Network (OSN) can help us not only to improve network performance but also to decrease the cost in network maintenance. However, existing ways of predicting critical nodes in static network are not suitable for OSN. In this paper, the conceptions of critical nodes, region contribution, and cut-vertex in multiregion OSN are defined. We propose an approach to predict critical node for OSN, which is based on multiple attribute decision making (MADM). It takes RC to present the dependence of regions on Ferry nodes. TOPSIS algorithm is employed to find out Ferry node with maximum comprehensive contribution, which is a critical node. The experimental results show that, in different scenarios, this approach can predict the critical nodes of OSN better

    Security layers and related services within the Horizon Europe NEUROPULS project

    In the contemporary security landscape, the incorporation of photonics has emerged as a transformative force, unlocking a spectrum of possibilities to enhance the resilience and effectiveness of security primitives. This integration represents more than a mere technological augmentation; it signifies a paradigm shift towards innovative approaches capable of delivering security primitives with key properties for low-power systems. This not only augments the robustness of security frameworks, but also paves the way for novel strategies that adapt to the evolving challenges of the digital age. This paper discusses the security layers and related services that will be developed, modeled, and evaluated within the Horizon Europe NEUROPULS project. These layers will exploit novel implementations for security primitives based on physical unclonable functions (PUFs) using integrated photonics technology. Their objective is to provide a series of services to support the secure operation of a neuromorphic photonic accelerator for edge computing applications.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Some ICT Systems for Increasing Occupational Safety with a Reference to the Seaport Environment

    The paper presents some commercial ICT (Information and Communication Technology) solutions for increasing workers’ safety in invasive environments (e.g., steel industry, mining, construction, oil and gas rigs, seaports, etc.). It has been pointed to the need to increase safety measures, primarily because of the necessity to protect human lives and health, as well as to increase productivity and reduce the costs, which companies and insurance agencies have to cover in the case of accidents. The article also briefly describes some alternative solutions that have been examined at the level of simulations, in accordance to the actual needs and available resources at the Port of Bar (South Adriatic Sea). This seaport has been operating during the decades in the transitional conditions and it has been permanently faced with the impediments in providing sophisticated and expensive ICT solutions for occupational safety purposes

    Path Quality Estimator for 802.15.4e TSCH Fast Deployment Tool

    [EN] This paper introduces a novel quality estimator that uses different metrics to decide the best path towards the root in Wireless Sensor Networks. The different metrics are assessed at medium access control layer (MAC), under the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, and are used at network layer, enhancing the best path selection process done by the routing protocol, and at the application layer, enabling visual quality indicators in the nodes. This quality function is used during deployment stage; ensuring nodes are located optimally and nimbly.
