    (Re)Forming Italians: Children\u27s Literature in Italy, 1929-1939

My dissertation argues for the centrality of children\u27s literature under Fascism as a tool to bring about the ultimate goal of forming the new Italian. This project examines the relationship between children\u27s literature, the creation of culture and the transmission of ideology in Fascist Italy. I chose the period 1929-1939 because this decade encompasses the years the regime actively sought consolidation of power and consensus, as well as the years of the fascistization of Italian schools. These novels are conduits of fascist ideology veiled as adventure stories, historical novels, bildungsroman or romantic fiction for children and young adults and deserve scholarly attention. The aim of children\u27s literature is ostensibly to impart life-lessons, however, this seemingly benign goal takes on a different meaning in the context of a totalitarian regime. Children\u27s literature, an extension of popular literature, reveals the cultural dynamics of a society and the values it holds most important. Children\u27s novels from 1930s Italy contain valuable insights into the ways the regime attempted to mold the new Italian, imbuing the youngest and most impressionable minds and bodies with fascist values. There is a current need for research that pokes and probes fascist hegemony during the 1930s. My dissertation\u27s analysis of children\u27s literature from 1929-1939 aims to fill this void

Sales and Advertising Rivalry in Interwar US Department Stores

Department stores represented one of the most advertising-intensive sectors of American inter-war retailing. Yet it has been argued that a competitive spiral of high advertising spending, to match the challenge of other local department stores, contributed to a damaging inflation of costs that eroded long-term competitiveness. We test these claims, using both qualitative archival data and establishment-level national data sets. Returns to stores’ advertising are shown to have fallen over the period, while own advertising led to retaliatory advertising by rival department stores, which substantially lowered returns on advertising dollars in the 1930s (but not the 1920s).Department stores, Interwar U.S. economic history, Advertising, Marketing

The paper analyzes total factor productivity (TFP) growth during the period 1929-1944 and its importance as a source of growth in Mexican manufacturing. The analysis of the industry is done at sector level. The paper task focuses on the estimation of TFP growth, and this is done using Harberger’s methodology named the Two Deflator Method (2D), whose main characteristic is the realization that the amount of information required to compute the TFP growth rate is much more manageable compared to traditional methods, besides being a very robust and easily applicable method. In addition, the paper presents an empirical analysis to support the thesis that total factor productivity advance was one of the main causes to explain import substitution and growth in manufacturing during the period 1929-1939.Publicad
