“While the imagination strains / after deer”: William Carlos Williams’s Interrogations of the American Transcendental Imagination and the Proto-Suburban Scene

Oftentimes the American suburbs are considered through the lens of architecture, economics, fiction, and visual media. And, typically, the conversation centers on their cultural zenith in the 1950s. One literary form is neglected in this conversation: poetry. This omission is peculiar, as a fascination with the vastness of the continent’s landscape—and its significance—pervades the history of the American verse. For Ralph Waldo Emerson, the apparently endless expanses of space and rejuvenative qualities of the American landscape provide the poet’s ideal inspiration, and Walt Whitman, in perhaps the most important collection of poetry of the nineteenth century, Leaves of Grass, is very much concerned with rendering the American experience through the landscape. As America approached modernity, suburbanization subsumed the American Romantic attitude toward the landscape and the evacuated rural spaces outside of urban cores to produce a new space for the bourgeois upper class. This relocation of the emergent bourgeois upper class to the outskirts of the city created a new hybridized space for Modernist poets to consider. William Carlos Williams’s poetry stands out from that of his Modernist counterparts in that it is able to identify and dismantle the illusion of proto-suburban spaces. That is to say, Williams notices that both the American proto-suburbs and the pastoral ideal rely upon ignoring the material reality of the rural and suburban poor. Through an analysis of Williams’s poetry, the history of the pastoral form, the history of the American suburbs, and contemporary literary criticism, this essay will consider how Williams responded to the subsumption of the American countryside

Verstehende Kritik des „Lieben- und Bewundernkönnens“ – Überlegungen zu Theorie und Praxis einer Gattung am Beispiel der Literaturkritik Max Herrmann-Neißes

Der Beitrag führt in das umfangreiche kritische Werk Max Herrmann-Neißes ein. Sein Kritikverständnis schließt an Alfred Kerrs Definition der Kritik als vierte Gattung neben Lyrik, Epik und Dramatik an und begreift Kritik als Metaliteratur. Herrmann-Neiße entwirft als Kritiker eine Literaturgeschichte seiner Zeit, die neben regionalen Literaturen wie der schlesischen west- und osteuropäische Literaturen im Kontext von Weltliteratur verortet. Dieses bedeutende Archiv einer historischen Kulturgeschichtsschreibung wird durch die analoge und digitale kritische, kommentierte Edition seiner Kritiken und Essays (1909–1939) gerade für den wissenschaftlichen und allgemeinen Gebrauch erschlossen.  The essay is an introduction to the critical work of Max Herrmann-Neiße. He follows Alfred Kerr’s theory of criticism as a fourth genre equal in status to poetry, prose and drama, and understands criticism as metaliterature. Through Herrmann-Neiße’s practice as a critic, he develops a history of contemporary literature, which positions regional literature such as Silesian and Western and Eastern European literature in the context of world literature. The critical, annotated, analogue and digital edition of the Kritiken und Essays (1909–1939) exploits this important archive of cultural history for scientific and common uses.  Niniejszy artykuł stanowi wprowadzenie do twórczości krytycznej Maksa Herrmanna-Neißego. Postrzeganie krytyki Herrmanna-Neißego ma swoje źródło w teorii krytyki Afreda Kerra, który w krytyce widział czwarty gatunek literacki, równorzędny z liryką, epiką i dramatem i interpretował ją jako metaliteraturę. W swojej praktyce jako recenzent Herrmann-Neiße szkicuje historię literatury swojej epoki, sytuując literaturę regionalną, a zatem śląską, jak również literature Europy Zachodniej i Wschodniej w kontekście literatury światowej. Kritiken und Essays (1909–1939) to znaczące archiwum piśmiennictwa z obszaru historii kultury przygotowywane jest obecnie do edycji w wersji drukowanej i do opatrzonej komentarzem krytycznej edycji w wersji cyfrowej i adresowane jest zarówno do kręgów akademickich jak i do szrokiego kręgu czytelniczego.

Interannual differences in the regressions of the polar caps of Mars

Analyses of the behavior of the Martian polar caps in the recent spacecraft and ground based observations seem to reveal the existence of year to year variations on their regressions. In order to investigate the interannual differences in the regressions of the polar caps, the earlier data by Fischbacher et al., were reexamined, which were based on the measurements of the large number of high quality photographic plates and films collected from 1905 to 1965 at the Lowell Observatory.
