The article analyzes the medical discourse of the directors of the Toronto asylum during the period from 1841 to 1850. These administrators gave the asylum the double objective of returning human dignity to the insane and of curing their insanity. Thus, they elaborated policies congruent to this double objective, policies, whéch when subjected to an elaborate analysis are seen to be ambiguous. In addition, a study of the unofficial day practices, reveals the Utopian nature of the official objectives and the veritably unchanged situation of these unfortunate people

Domestic migrations in Spain during its first industrialisation, 1840s-1870s

Using an original microeconomic database with information for around 200,000 individuals, this paper creates new estimates of internal migrations in Spain in a key moment of its economic history. Our analysis shows that internal migrations were not a linear process including both periods of stagnation and also rapid growth, and that the 1850s were a decade of surprising high mobility in the absence of modern transportation. We also conclude that the rise in mobility was geographically asymmetrical with traditional urban centres losing ground against the rise of Madrid and Barcelona. The modernisation of the country also had significant social impacts with the migratory gender gap being significantly reduced prior to 1870. An analysis of the determinants of internal migrations suggests that traditional push and pull factors described by the literature in the early twentieth century seem to be also behind the early migrations of the mid-nineteenth century. The modernisation of the country provided new opportunities in urban areas that, combined with falling transport and information costs, created the perfect conditions for the ‘democratisation’ of long-distance migrationsFinancial support from the project “Los orígenes de la desigualdad regional en España, 1840–2015” funded by Fundación Ramón Areces is acknowledged

Exciting Times for Cowpea Genetic Transformation Research

    Get PDF
Cowpea represents a major food crop for the poor in Asia and especially in Africa. However, its production is constrained principally by insect pests as well as diseases. Attempts to improve cowpea insect resistance have not yielded significant result till date. This paper reviews biotechnological approaches that have been employed to transfer foreign genes into cowpea with a view to conferring desirable traits on it. The recent advances made in generating cowpea transformants with stable inheritance of trangenes by the progenies heralds exciting times for the genetic transformation research on this erstwhile recalcitrant food crop. As such, this genetic transformation approach could be used to transfer insect resistance traits to the crop species

Volatile flavour constituent patterns of terras madeirenses red wines extracted by dynamic headspace solid‐phase microextraction

    Get PDF
A suitable analytical procedure based on static headspace solid-phase microextraction (SPME) followed by thermal desorption gas chromatography–ion trap mass spectrometry detection (GC–ITDMS), was developed and applied for the qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis of volatile components of Portuguese Terras Madeirenses red wines. The headspace SPME method was optimised in terms of fibre coating, extraction time, and extraction temperature. The performance of three commercially available SPME fibres, viz. 100 lm polydimethylsiloxane; 85 lm polyacrylate, PA; and 50/30 lm divinylbenzene/carboxen on polydimethylsiloxane, was evaluated and compared. The highest amounts extracted, in terms of the maximum signal recorded for the total volatile composition, were obtained with a PA coating fibre at 308C during an extraction time of 60 min with a constant stirring at 750 rpm, after saturation of the sample with NaCl (30%, w/v). More than sixty volatile compounds, belonging to different biosynthetic pathways, have been identified, including fatty acid ethyl esters, higher alcohols, fatty acids, higher alcohol acetates, isoamyl esters, carbonyl compounds, and monoterpenols/C13-norisoprenoids
