On the Biological Standard of Living of Eighteenth-Century Americans: Taller, Richer, Healthier

This study analyses the physical stature of runaway apprentices and military deserters based on advertisements collected from 18th-century newspapers, in order to explore the biological welfare of colonial and early-national Americans. The results indicate that heights declined somewhat at mid-century, but increased substantially thereafter. The findings are generally in keeping with trends in mortality and in economic activity. The Americans were much taller than Europeans: by the 1780s adults were as much as 6.6 cm taller than Englishmen, and at age 16 American apprentices were some 12 cm taller than the poor children of London

Римско-католическое церковно-приходское образование на Волыни в составе Российской империи в ХІХ веке(The Roman Catholic parochial schools on the Volhyn in the Russian Empire in the 19th century)

Статья посвящена анализу особенностей организации и осуществления приходского образования на Волыни римско-католическим духовенством. Доказано, что к середине XIX века приходское школьное образование на Волыни контролировалось римско-католическим клиром, который помимо пастырских обязанностей, выполнял культурно-общественную работу (The article analyzes the characteristics of the organization and implementation of parochial schools on the Volhyn. It is proved that by the middle of the 19th century parochial schools on the Volhyn controlled by Roman Catholic clergy, who in addition to pastoral duties, comply with cultural social work

Участь римо-католицького луцько-житомирського духовенства у розвитку початкового шкільництва на Волині в першій половині ХІХ ст. (Participation of the Roman-Catholic lutsk-zhytomyr clergy in the development of the parochial schools on the Volhyn in the first part of the 19th century.)

У статті автор проаналізувала розвиток початкової освіти на Волині у першій половині ХІХ століття, яка перебувала в руках римо-католицьких священиків. Подано характеристику двох основних типів шкіл: міських двовідділових і сільських одновідділових. Важливу роль у реформуванні освіти на початку ХІХ ст. відігравали дві особистості, поляки за походженням: куратор Віленського навчального округу Адам Чарторийський та візитатор шкіл Волинської, Подільської та Київської губерній Тадеуш Чацький. (In the article author analyzed development of parochial schools on Volhyn in the first half of the 19th century, they were lead by the Roman-Catholic lutsk-zhytomyr clergy. The author makes the conclusion that the Roman-Catholic church was done the great impact on the elementary schools’ development on the Volhyn. Description of two basic types of schools is given: city and village. An important role in reformation of education at the beginning of the 19th century was played by two personalities, Poland originally: Adam Chartoryjsky and Tadeush Chacky.
