    Versatile standardized pulse modulation nondissipatively regulated control signal processing circuits were applied to three most commonly used dc to dc power converter configurations: (1) the series switching buck-regulator, (2) the pulse modulated parallel inverter, and (3) the buck-boost converter. The unique control concept and the commonality of control functions for all switching regulators have resulted in improved static and dynamic performance and control circuit standardization.     Improved Accuracy Area Efficient Hybrid CMOS/GaN DC-DC Buck Converterfor High Step-Down Ratio Applications

    abstract: Point of Load (POL) DC-DC converters are increasingly used in space applications, data centres, electric vehicles, portable computers and devices and medical electronics. Heavy computing and processing capabilities of the modern devices have ushered the use of higher battery supply voltage to increase power storage. The need to address this consumer experience driven requirement has propelled the evolution of the next generation of small form-factor power converters which can operate with higher step down ratios while supplying heavy continuous load currents without sacrificing efficiency. Constant On-Time (COT) converter topology is capable of achieving stable operation at high conversion ratio with minimum off-chip components and small silicon area. This work proposes a Constant On-Time buck dc-dc converter for a wide dynamic input range and load currents from 100mA to 10A. Accuracy of this ripple based converter is improved by a unique voltage positioning technique which modulates the reference voltage to lower the average ripple profile close to the nominal output. Adaptive On-time block features a transient enhancement scheme to assist in faster voltage droop recovery when the output voltage dips below a defined threshold. UtilizingGallium Nitride (GaN) power switches enable the proposed converter to achieve very high efficiency while using smaller size inductor-capacitor (LC) power-stage. Use of novel Superjunction devices with higher drain-source blocking voltage simplifies the complex driver design and enables faster frequency of operation. It allows 1.8VComplementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) devices to effectively drive GaNpower FETs which require 5V gate signal swing. The presented controller circuit uses internal ripple generation which reduces reliance on output cap equivalent series resistance (ESR) for loop stability and facilitates ripples reduction at the output. The ripple generation network is designed to provide ai optimally stable performance while maintaining load regulation and line regulation accuracy withing specified margin. The chip with ts external Power FET package is proposed to be integrated on a printed circuit board for testing. The designed power converter is expected to operate under 200 MRad of a total ionising dose of radiation enabling it to function within large hadron collider at CERN and space satellite and probe missions.Dissertation/ThesisMasters Thesis Electrical Engineering 201

    Power conversion techniques in nanometer CMOS for low-power applications

    As System-on-Chip (SoCs) in nanometer CMOS technologies grow larger, the power management process within these SoCs becomes very challenging. In the heart of this process lies the challenge of implementing energy-efficient and cost-effective DC-DC power converters. To address this challenge, this thesis studies in details three different aspects of DC-DC power converters and proposes potential solutions. First, to maximize power conversion efficiency, loss mechanisms must be studied and quantified. For that purpose, we provide comprehensive analysis and modeling of the various switching and conduction losses in low-power synchronous DC-DC buck converters in both Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM) and Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) operation, including the case with non-rail gate control of the power switches. Second, a DC-DC buck converter design with only on-chip passives is proposed and implemented in 65-nm CMOS technology. The converter switches at 588 MHz and uses a 20-nH and 300-pF on-chip inductor and capacitor respectively, and provides up to 30-mA of load at an output voltage in the range of 0.8-1.2 V. The proposed design features over 10% improvement in power conversion efficiency over a corresponding linear regulator while preserving low-cost implementation. Finally, a 40-mA buck converter design operating in the inherently-stable DCM mode for the entire load range is presented. It employs a Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) scheme using a Hysteretic-Assisted Adaptive Minimum On-Time (HA-AMOT) controller to automatically adapt to a wide range of operating scenarios while minimizing inductor peak current. As a result, compact silicon area, low quiescent current, high efficiency, and robust performance across all conditions can be achieved without any calibration

    An agile supply modulator with improved transient performance for power efficient linear amplifier employing envelope tracking techniques

    This article presents an agile supply modulator with optimal transient performance that includes improvement in rise time, overshoot and settling time for the envelope tracking supply in linear power amplifiers. For this purpose, we propose an on-demand current source module: the bang-bang transient performance enhancer (BBTPE). Its objective is to follow fast variations in input signals with reduced overshoot and settling time without deteriorating the steady-state performance of the buck regulator. The proposed approach enables fast system response through the BBTPE and an accurate steady-state output response through a low switching ripple and power efficient dynamic buck regulator. Fast output response with the help of the added module induces a slower rise of inductor current in the buck converter that further helps the proposed system to reduce both overshoot and settling time. This article also introduces an efficient selective tracking of envelope signal for linear PAs. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed solution, extensive simulations and experimental results from a discrete system are reported. The proposed supply modulator shows 80% improvement in rise time along with 60% reduction in both overshoot and settling time compared to the conventional dynamic buck regulator-based solution. Experimental results using the LTE 16-QAM 5 MHz standard shows improvement of 7.68 dB and 65.1% in adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) and error vector magnitude (EVM), respectively.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    MODELING AND CONTROL OF DIRECT-CONVERSION HYBRID SWITCHED-CAPACITOR DC-DC CONVERTERS

    Efficient power delivery is increasingly important in modern computing, communications, consumer and other electronic systems, due to the high power demand and thermal concerns accompanied by performance advancements and tight packaging. In pursuit of high efficiency, small physical volume, and flexible regulation, hybrid switched-capacitor topologies have emerged as promising candidates for such applications. By incorporating both capacitors and inductors as energy storage elements, hybrid topologies achieve high power density while still maintaining soft charging and efficient regulation characteristics. However, challenges exist in the hybrid approach. In terms of reliability, each flying capacitor should be maintained at a nominal `balanced\u27 voltage for robust operation (especially during transients and startup), complicating the control system design. In terms of implementation, switching devices in hybrid converters often need complex gate driving circuits which add cost, area, and power consumption. This dissertation explores techniques that help to mitigate the aforementioned challenges. A discrete-time state space model is derived by treating the hybrid converter as two subsystems, the switched-capacitor stage and the output filter stage. This model is then used to design an estimator that extracts all flying capacitor voltages from the measurement of a single node. The controllability and observability of the switched-capacitor stage reveal the fundamental cause of imbalance at certain conversion ratios. A new switching sequence, the modified phase-shifted pulse width modulation, is developed to enable natural balance in originally imbalanced scenarios. Based on the model, a novel control algorithm, constant switch stress control, is proposed to achieve both output voltage regulation and active balance with fast dynamics. Finally, the design technique and test result of an integrated hybrid switched-capacitor converter are reported. A proposed gate driving strategy eliminates the need for external driving supplies and reduces the bootstrap capacitor area. On-chip mixed signal control ensures fast balancing dynamics and makes hard startup tolerable. This prototype achieves 96.9\% peak efficiency at 5V:1.2V conversion and a startup time of 12ÎĽs\mu s, which is over 100 times faster than the closest prior art. With the modeling, control, and design techniques introduced in this dissertation, the application of hybrid switched-capacitor converters may be extended to scenarios that were previously challenging for them, allowing enhanced performance compared to using traditional topologies. For problems that may require future attention, this dissertation also points to possible directions for further improvements

    DC/DC Converters for Electric Vehicles

    International audienceThe large number of automobiles in use around the world has caused and continues to cause serious problems of environment and human life. Air pollution, global warming, and the rapid depletion of the earth’s petroleum resources are now serious problems. Electric Vehicles (EVs), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) have been typically proposed to replace conventional vehicles in the near future. Most electric and hybrid electric configurations use two energy storage devices, one with high energy storage capability, called the “main energy system” (MES), and the other with high power capability and reversibility, called the “rechargeable energy storage system” (RESS). MES provides extended driving range, and RESS provides good acceleration and regenerative braking. Energy storage or supply devices vary their output voltage with load or state of charge and the high voltage of the DC-link create major challenges for vehicle designers when integrating energy storage / supply devices with a traction drive. DC-DC converters can be used to interface the elements in the electric power train by boosting or chopping the voltage levels. Due to the automotive constraints, the power converter structure has to be reliable, lightweight, small volume, with high efficiency, low electromagnetic interference and low current/voltage ripple. Thus, in this chapter, a comparative study on three DC/DC converters topologies (Conventional step-up dc-dc converter, interleaved 4-channels step-up dc-dc converter with independent inductors and Full-Bridge step-up dc-dc converter) is carried out. The modeling and the control of each topology are presented. Simulations of 30KW DC/DC converter are carried out for each topology. This study takes into account the weight, volume, current and voltage ripples, Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and the efficiency of each converter topology
