Spatial inequality in the Southeast Asian Intercity Transport Network

    Get PDF
Spatial inequality in transport access is both the driver and outcome of rising economic inequality in Southeast Asia. Unlike many regional disparity studies that focus on national economic indicators, this paper takes an urban network approach to assess the spatial inequality in Southeast Asian intercity transport network. We analyze urban connectivity in intercity road, rail, and air networks for a total of 47 Southeast Asian cities. Spatial inequality at the city and network level is revealed via centrality measures and community detection, respectively. Gini coefficients for individual centrality rankings point to a hierarchical degree distribution, a rather even distribution of closeness centrality, and a highly concentrated distribution of betweenness centrality. Four network communities are identified, reflecting the influences of entrenched uneven development, fragmented geography, and economic and political policies

An Analysis of Airfreight Transshipment Connectivity at Suvarnabhumi International Airport

The greatest way of determining the attractiveness of an airport’s services is through its connectivity. Connectivity is usually determined in terms of connectivity units (CNUs), which are obtained by multiplying a quality index with the frequency of flights to a given destination from the airport. The sum of connectivity units for different destinations gives the overall connectivity of the airport. This is the NETSCAN model which has been used in this research paper to determine the connectivity of Suvarnabhumi international airport in its operations as a hub. The connectivity was found to be low, 29.7 out of a maximum of 74 for the selected destinations and flight frequencies. It was however concluded that this cannot be taken to be the exact rating of the airport’s connectivity with regards to air freight transshipment since only a very small percentage of the airlines it serves was considered. In addition to this, it was noted that a comparison should be made to determine the airport’s competitive position. Keywords: Connectivity Units, NETSCAN model and Air Freight Transshipmen

In my paper, I offer a brief analysis of just some of the ways in which certain members of the Akha transnational minority group are redefi ning Akhaness amidst the Upper Mekong Region’s ongoing transition from “battlefields to markets”. Drawing on 32 months of research in the region, I bring attention to the efforts of certain Akha elite to promote a more formal pan-Akha sense of belonging of a profoundly religious nature. I highlight the complex ways in which certain local Akha actors are reshaping culture by way of multiple and shifting orientations to the past as well as the nationaland transnational in the contexts of social gatherings, communal rituals, linguistic productions, multimedia engagements, and cross-border travel. I argue that by virtue of these simultaneously multi-sited representations of Akhaness, certain Akha are composing their own theories of culture that in part challenge and incorporate dominant models of nationalism and globalization, all the while reproducing and claiming a distinctly Akha way of being in the world

Many studies show that English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Thai students are weak in their reading comprehension due to less attractive and ineffective teaching methods. Although YouTube is a very attractive and effective tool in teaching and learning English, it is not widely used among teachers in Thailand. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of utilizing YouTube on Thai students’ performance in Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) and Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) comprehension questions and their motivation towards EFL reading comprehension. The study also explored students’ and teachers’ perceptions on the utilization of YouTube and conventional lecture method in teaching reading comprehension. The quantitative data were gathered from the pre-test, post-test and questionnaires and were analysed using Independent Samples T-test. The qualitative data from the semi-structured interviews were analysed based on emerging themes. Finding from this study indicated that the utilization of YouTube significantly enhanced students’ LOTS and HOTS comprehension and their motivation towards reading. The qualitative findings also indicated that YouTube is a very effective tool in teaching and learning EFL comprehension. The students stressed that You Tube enabled them to guess the meaning of difficult words which helped them to understand the reading text better. The YouTube also made the lesson more fun, interesting and students could concentrate on their reading lesson. The teacher stressed that YouTube helped to enrich the students’ prior knowledge and enhance their comprehension. This study revealed that YouTube could be systematically utilized for improving students’ reading comprehension for LOTS and HOTS. Students are also more motivated and interested to learn English when the YouTube is used as compared to the conventional lecture method. The use of YouTube can be incorporated in the syllabus through the Teacher’s Training Division and the Ministry of Education
