Near-Infrared Photometry of Irregular Satellites of Jupiter and Saturn

We present JHKs photometry of 10 Jovian and 4 Saturnian irregular satellites, taken with the Near-InfraRed Imager (NIRI) at the 8-m Gemini North Observatory on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The observed objects have near-infrared colors consistent with C, P and D-type asteroids, although J XII Ananke and S IX Phoebe show weak indications of possible water features in the H filter. The four members of the Himalia-family have similar near-infrared colors, as do the two members of the Gallic family, S XX Paaliaq and S XXIX Siarnaq. From low resolution normalized reflectance spectra based on the broadband colors and covering 0.4 to 2.2 microns, the irregular satellites are identified as C-type (J VII Pasiphae, J VI Himalia and S IX Phoebe), P-type (J XII Ananke and J XVIII Themisto) and D-type (J IX Carme and J X Sinope), showing a diversity of origins of these objects.Comment: Accepted by ApJ Letters (emulateapj, 8pages, including 4 figures); Typos corrected, references adde

Spectral Line Imaging Observations of 1E0102.2-7219

E0102-72 is the second brightest X-ray source in the Small Magellanic Cloud and the brightest supernova remnant in the SMC. We observed this SNR for ~140 ksec with the High Energy Transmission Gratings (HETG) aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The small angular size and high surface brightness make this an excellent target for HETG and we resolve the remnant into individual lines. We observe fluxes from several lines which include O VIII Lyα\alpha, Lyβ\beta, and O VII along with several lines from Ne X, Ne IX and Mg XII. These line ratios provide powerful constraints on the electron temperature and the ionization age of the remnant.Comment: To appear in "Young Supernova Remnants" (11th Annual Astrophysics Conference in Maryland), S. Cranial Nerves IX To XII

Cranial nerves IX to XII are rarely affected by pathology compared with cranial nerves III, V, VII, and VIII. Nonetheless, their evaluation is challenging, since lesions of these nerves span the gamut from intracranial to extracranial sites. Imaging of these cranial nerves requires a focused approach based on clinical symptomatology and signs. This unit presents the basic protocol for imaging cranial nerves IX to XII. An alternate protocol is presented for cases where non‐neoplastic lesions are considered.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/145360/1/cpmia0704.pd

The activity state of factor VII in plasma:Two pathways for the cold promoted activation of factor VII

    Get PDF
The apparent amount of factor VII as determined in a one-stage test depends on the type of thromboplastin used: bovine thromboplastin only reacts with human factor VIIa whereas human thromboplastin interacts with unactivated human factor VII as well. Therefore the ratio factor VII activity as measured with bovine thromboplastin divided by the factor VII activity as assessed with human thromboplastin reflects the state of activation of factor VII in plasma. This approach was used to study the process of cold promoted factor VII activation and the involvement of different clotting factors therein. It could be shown that cold promoted activation does not occur in the absence of factors II and XII and is reduced for about 50% in factor IX deficient plasma. The other coagulation factors have a minor influence on the process. The results indicate that the cold promoted factor VII activation is the result of activation by both activated contact products and thrombin
