This paper discusses issues in teaching streaming and other multimedia applications in a Information Systems or Computer Information Systems program. It addresses the value of such learning to students and graduates and the technological and pedagogical issues involved in establishing and maintaining courses in this area. The discussion suggests how to organize a course that will help students learn to develop streaming and nonstreaming multimedia content suitable for the web and suggests the resources that are necessary to support course content and delivery

    The Kidney: An Interactive tutorial

    Get PDF
The intention of this thesis is to create an interactive, multi-media educational module. The subject is the form and function of the human kidney. This module is intended as an introductory overview to the physical description of the kidney, its tissues, functions, and its relationships with other major organs within the human body. The end product could be conceived of as a chapter in an encyclopedia set of similar such chapters. Target audiences could be, but are not limited to, secondary education and college undergraduate health science students, doctors\u27 patients, family of patients, and /or caregivers of individuals with kidney related health issues. This program is intended for use in the context of an interactive educational computer station, a web-based educational site, for distance learning in a virtual classroom setting and as a CD /ROM that could be purchased outright or used as reference material from a public library. The overarching design of the program is developed around four major premises. The first of these is the interactivity design. The interactive model is designed for return usage and accommodates familiarization with the program on the part of the user. First time usage navigation is prompted by the software. However, usage is fully interactive and allows for extensive self-direction by repeat users. The intention is to give the viewer maximum freedom of aided visual exploration. The second premise is the division of the intended subject matter into manageable domains. The subjects of the human kidney covered in the program include general orientation within the body, gross anatomy, internal structures, histology and function. A third organizational factor in the development of this program involves visual aesthetics and stylistic concerns. The goal was not to simplify, but rather to clarify. My intention was to concentrate on the use of still, detailed, representational, volumetric renderings of structure and form. I sought to deliberately edit the visual subject matter in the virtual environment in such a way as to promote focus. Use was made of three-dimensional graphic modeling programs to emphasize structural relationships. Cross-sectional imagery from the Virtual Human project of the National Library of Medicine is used as a graphic corollary to my own illustrations to invite greater realism in the viewer\u27s experience of the subject. A final concern in the development of this program is the choice of medium. The project is conceived of as a chance to make in-depth exploration into the use of electronic art mediums. The reality of my own experience is that the development of this program has drawn from, and touched upon, virtually every aspect of my education within the Master of Fine Arts in Medical Illustration program at Rochester Institute of Technology. For me, this represents the most successful aspect of my endeavor within the program

The Stomatopod Alachosquilla floridensis (Manning, 1962) (Crustacea, Stomatopoda, Nannosquillidae) Reported from Guana Island, British Virgin Islands, with Observations on Color

Although color pattern can vary among and within species of the Crustacea, it can also be a conservative feature that can be very helpful in field identifications. This is often the case in the Crustacea Decapoda, where sibling species can be detected by subtle differences in color (e.g., Williams and Felder 1989, Zimmerman and Felder 1991, Knowlton and Mills 1992). Stomatopods are among the most colorful crustaceans when living. Many species show a great deal of variability (Manning 1969, Camp 1973), and knowledge of this coloration is often key to their identification in the field and in the lab (Schotte and Manning 1993). As part of an ongoing survey of the marine invertebrate fauna of Guana Island, British Virgin Islands, we collected 2 large (45 mm and 48 mm TL) females, and one male specimen (30 mm TL) of the rarely reported stomatopod species Alachosquilla floridensis (Manning 1962). To our knowledge, the species has been reported previously in the literature only 4 times (see Schotte and Manning 1993). These reports are based on a total of 8 specimens. Previous distribution records for the species include Lake Worth Inlet, Florida; Virgin Gorda, US Virgin Islands; Isla Marguerita, Venezuela; Bahia, Brazil; and Saint Giles Island and London Bridge Rock, Tobago, West Indies (Manning 1969, Schotte and Manning 1993)

The p75 neurotrophin receptor is expressed by adult mouse dentate progenitor cells and regulates neuronal and non-neuronal cell genesis

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The ability to regulate neurogenesis in the adult dentate gyrus will require further identification and characterization of the receptors regulating this process. <it>In vitro </it>and <it>in vivo </it>studies have demonstrated that neurotrophins and the p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR) can promote neurogenesis; therefore we tested the hypothesis that p75NTR is expressed by adult dentate gyrus progenitor cells and is required for their proliferation and differentiation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In a first series of studies focusing on proliferation, mice received a single BrdU injection and were sacrificed 2, 10 and 48 hours later. Proliferating, BrdU-positive cells were found to express p75NTR. In a second series of studies, BrdU was administered by six daily injections and mice were sacrificed 1 day later. Dentate gyrus sections demonstrated a large proportion of BrdU/p75NTR co-expressing cells expressing either the NeuN neuronal or GFAP glial marker, indicating that p75NTR expression persists at least until early stages of maturation. In p75NTR (-/-) mice, there was a 59% decrease in the number of BrdU-positive cells, with decreases in the number of BrdU cells co-labeled with NeuN, GFAP or neither marker of 35%, 60% and 64%, respectively.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These findings demonstrate that p75NTR is expressed by adult dentate progenitor cells and point to p75NTR as an important receptor promoting the proliferation and/or early maturation of not only neural, but also glial and other cell types.</p

Conserved and divergent functions of Drosophila atonal , amphibian, and mammalian Ath5 genes

Insect and vertebrate eyes differ in their formation, cellular composition, neural connectivity, and visual function. Despite this diversity, Drosophila atonal and its vertebrate Ortholog in the eye, Ath5 , each regulate determination of the first retinal neuron class—R8 photo-receptors and retinal ganglion cells (RGCs)—in their respective organisms. We have performed a cross-species functional comparison of these genes. In ato 1 mutant Drosophila , ectopic Xenopus Ath5 ( Xath5 ) rescues photoreceptor cell development comparably with atonal . In contrast, mouse Ath5 ( Math5 ) induces formation of very few ommatidia, and most of these lack R8 cells. In the developing frog eye, ectopic atonal , like Xath5 , promotes the differentiation RGCs. Despite strong conservation of atonal , Xath5 , and Math5 structure and shared function, other factors must contribute to the species specificity of retinal neuron determination. These observations suggest that the atonal family may occupy a position in a gene hierarchy where differences in gene regulation or function can be correlated with evolutionary diversity of eye development.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/72909/1/j.1525-142X.2003.03058.x.pd
