The Modular Homology of Inclusion Maps and Group Actions

The set inclusion map: Mk Mk&1 is the homomorphism which associates to a k-element subset 2 the sum (2)=11+12+}}}+1kof all its (k&1)-element subsets 1i. In this paper we study the chain 0 M 0 M 1 M 2}}}M k M k+1 M k+2}}} (*) arising from. We introduce the notion of p-exactness for a sequence and show that any interval of (*) not including Mn 2 or Mn+1 2 respectively, is p-exact for any prime p>0. This result can be extended to various submodules and quotient modules, and we give general constructions for permutation groups on 0 of order not divisible by p. If an interval of (*) , or an equivalent sequence arising from a permutation group on 0, does include the middle term then proper homologies can occur. In these cases we have determined all corresponding Betti numbers. A further application are p-rank formulae for orbit inclusion matrices. 1996 Academic Press, Inc. 1

Response to 1 Timothy 2:11-12 or its parallel, 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 by three sixteenth-century Protestant women theologians: Argula von Grumbach, Marie Dentiére, and Anne Askew

The Protestant women who engaged in theology and biblical scholarship throughout the sixteenth century faced numerous barriers entering into and being heard within their Protestant movements. Because Protestants recognize Scripture as the primary authority on matters of faith, 1 Timothy 2:11-12, along with its parallel in 1 Corinthians 14:34-35, provided a unique impediment to sixteenth-century Protestant women theologians. These women faced the burden of both affirming the authority of Scripture and simultaneously contravening the biblical prohibition against women teaching. Many women theologians of the time; including Argula von Grumbach, Marie Dentiére, and Anne Askew; addressed this issue in their writings. These writings offer a glimpse into how they each wrestled with the question of women’s roles in the religious movements of their times. In this thesis, I argue that von Grumbach, Dentiére, and Askew interpreted 1 Timothy 2:11-12 or its parallel 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 to their audiences in a variety of ways to argue that their involvement in the Reformation was exempted from the Pauline injunction against women teaching or holding authority over men

Condensing on metric spaces : modeling, analysis and simulation

In this work, we extend the Hegselmann and Krause (HK) model, presented in [16] to an arbitrary metric space. We also present some theoretical analysis and some numerical results of the condensing of particles in finite and continuous metric spaces. For simulations in a finite metric space, we introduce the notion "random metric" using the split metrics studies by Dress and al. [2, 11, 12]

Per-Client Network Performance Isolation in VDE-based Cloud Computing Servers

Authors' final versionIn a cloud server where multiple virtual machines owned by different clients are cohosted, excessive traffic generated by a small group of clients may well jeopardize the quality of service of other clients. It is thus very important to provide per-client network performance isolation in a cloud computing environment. Unfortunately, the existing techniques are not effective enough for a huge cloud computing system since it is difficult to adopt them in a large scale and they often require non-trivial modification to the established network protocols. To overcome such difficulties, we propose per-client network performance isolation using VDE (Virtual Distributed Ethernet) as a base framework. Our approach begins with per-client weight specification and support client-aware fair share scheduling and packet dispatching for both incoming and outgoing traffic. It also provides hierarchical fairness between a client and its virtual machines. Our approach supports full virtualization of a guest OS, wide scale adoption, limited modification to the existing system, low run-time overhead and work-conserving servicing. Our experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
