IX e Par. XVII leggendo il primo come strumento musicale a canne e il secondo come musica polifonica. This essay explores the historico-musicological context of organum, both as musical instrument and polyphonic song. The essay thus proposes an interpretaion of two passages of the Commedia in which the term 'organi' / 'organo' appears (Purg. IX, 144 e Par. XVII, 44).The essay shows that Dante, in the Purgatorial passage, refers to formulaic descriptions of great church organs, which produced a powerful and disconcerting sound.Drawing from medieval treatises and monastic sources, the article interprets "organi" in Purg. IX as the pipe instrument and "organo" in Par. XVII as vocal polyphony
Human retinal Müller cells synthesize collagens of the vitreous and vitreoretinal interface in vitro
Purpose: To investigate the capacity of cultured Muller cells to synthesize collagens, since previous studies indicated that Muller cells could be involved in collagen remodeling at the vitreoretinal border in adult human eyes. Methods: Spontaneously immortalized cultured human Muller cells were analyzed for the presence of mRNA of types I-VII, IX, XI, and XVII collagen by RT-PCR. Furthermore, Muller cells were immunocytochemically stained for light microscopic (LM) evaluation of these collagens and their main characteristics. Finally, cell extracts and culture medium were evaluated by western blot (WB) analysis using anticollagen antibodies. Results: Cultured Muller cells contained mRNA for types I-VII, IX, and XI collagen, but not for type XVII collagen. LM and WB confirmed the intracellular expression of all the above-mentioned collagens with the exception of type XVII. Collagen secretion into the medium was established for types I-VII, IX, and XI collagen. Conclusions: Cultured Muller cells can synthesize internal limiting lamina and vitreous collagens. Possible collagen production by Muller cells could explain and expand on previous in vivo morphological findings in the embryonic and postnatal period and in pathologic conditions

Ancient writers on natural history, poets and scholars paid attention to the homeric expression iegov ix%v (Iliad XVII 407), to which some attributed a special meaning and others referred to a concrete fish; but these speculations didn't take into account the homeric context
Pteridines, LXXVII. C-Acylations of Pteridines by Homolytic Heteroaromatic Substitution
Homolytic substitution reactions with acyl radicals proceed with 2,4-diamino- (VI-VIlI) and 4-amino-2-methylthiopteridines (XXVII-XX IX) selectively at position 7 to give the corresponding 7-acyl derivatives IX-XV and XXX-XXXV, respectively, in moderate to good yields. The ketone character of these new pteridines is demonstrated by carbonyl reactions forming a hydrazone (XVIII) and oximes (XVI, XVII), as well as 7-(1-hydroxyalkyl)- pteridine derivati ves (XIX, XX) on sodium borohydride reduction. Characterization of the newly synthesized compounds has
been achieved by elementary analysis, lH-NMR and UV spectra

Peer reviewe
Synthesis of a-Amino-1-Adamantylacetic and a-Amino- 2-Adamantylacetic Acid
a-Amino-2-adamantylacetic acid (VII) was obtained when
2-adamantylcyanoacetylhydrazide (IX) was subjected to Curtius
rearrangement or 2-(2-adaman;tyl)-malonamic acid (XII) to Hofmann
degradation. The same amino acid was obtained when ri.-
bromo-2-adamantylacetic acid (VI) was •treated with ammonia.
Partial hydrolysis of diethyl adamantyl-(1)-malonate (XIV)
yie1ded ethyl adamantyl-(1)-malcmate (XV) which, after treatment
with thionyl chlodde and then ammonia, gave 2-(1-adamantyl)-
malonamic acid ethyl ester (XVII). Hofmann degradation of
2-(1 -adamantyl)-malonamic acid ethyl ester gave a-amino-1-
-adama:ntylacetic acid (XVIII)
