On spectra of BCH codes
Derives an estimate for the error term in the binomial approximation of spectra of BCH codes. This estimate asymptotically improves on the bounds by Sidelnikov (1971), Kasami et al. (1985), and Sole (1990)

The Effects Of Income Inequality On Service Sector Growth
The objective of this paper is to investigate the effects of income inequality on the service sector growth of 45 countries from the period 1971 to 2010. The countries are divided into low, middle and high income groups, and the analysis is carried out in two sub-time periods, 1971 to 1990 and 1991 to 2010. The analysis reveals that during 1971-1990, the effect of income inequality on service sector growth is negative and significant for low and middle income countries, whereas it is insignificant for high income countries. During 1991-2010 the effect of income inequality on service sector growth is positive and significant for all country groups
THE U.S. APPLE INDUSTRY: ECONOMETRIC MODEL AND PROJECTIONS
A dynamic model of the U.S. apple industry, including relationships for bearing acres, production, utilization, and allocation to the fresh, canned, frozen, juice, dried and other markets, is specified. Demands for each of these markets are modeled. Model coefficients are obtained using Zellner's seemingly unrelated regression procedure and data from 1971 through 1990. Elasticities and flexibilities are compared with other studies. Projections indicate that price fluctuations will continue in the industry when acreage is held at 1990 levels. A ten percent increase in fresh exports strengthens all apple prices. However, a ten percent decrease in the price of juice imports mitigates some of this effect.Crop Production/Industries,
Demographic trends in the Okinawa Dialysis Study (OKIDS) registry (1971–2000)
Demographic trends in the Okinawa Dialysis Study (OKIDS) registry (1971–2000).BackgroundThe clinical demographics of chronic dialysis patients are changing worldwide. However, long-term data from regional dialysis registries have not yet been analyzed and reported.MethodsThe Okinawa Dialysis Study (OKIDS) registry included all chronic dialysis patients treated in Okinawa, Japan, since 1971. Data for the years 1971 to 1990 were analyzed to predict trends for 1991 to 2000. The predicted values were then compared to the actual values and analyzed statistically, with particular attention being paid to relative risk of death. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis was done to analyze the time factors of relative risk of death.ResultsA total of 5246 patients (2981 men and 2265 women) were registered and the total duration of observation was 28,431 patient-years. The prevalence and incidence of dialysis patients expressed per million population were 2320 and 297, respectively, in 2000, values that were significantly higher (P < 0.02 for both) than the predicted values. The gross mortality rate per 1000 patient-years was 118.4 for 1971 to 1980, 63.3 for 1981 to 1990, and 77.7 for 1991 to 2000. The adjusted hazards ratio (95% confidence interval) for mortality was 0.743 (0.650 to 0.862) for 1981–1990 and 0.721 (0.659 to 0.790) for 1991 to 2000 in comparison to the risk of mortality in 1971 to 1980. The decrease in mortality rate was largely due to the drop in cardiac deaths from 71.0 for 1971 to 1980 to 17.2 for 1991 to 2000.ConclusionsThe incidence and prevalence of chronic dialysis patients increased more than expected over the past decade in Okinawa, Japan. Despite the rapid change in patient demographics, the survival rate did not decrease significantly
Incidence trends of prostate cancer in East Anglia, before and during the era of PSA diagnostic testing
We investigated prostate cancer incidence in East Anglia from 1971 to 2000. Using age-period-cohort modelling, the number of cases expected in 1991–2000, based on pre-PSA trends, 1971–1990, was compared with that observed. Based on pre-1991 trends, 9203 new cases were expected in 1991–2000, but 9788 cases were observed, an excess of 6%
International convergence and divergence of material input structures: an industry-level perspective
This note analyzes whether international material input structures have converged or diverged over time. Pooled variances for 25 industries were obtained from OECD input-output tables in constant prices for nine countries over the period 1971-1990. It is found that high-tech industries were mainly characterized by divergence of material input structures, whereas convergence was found for many low-tech, more mature industries. In line with studies on (labor) productivity growth rates, convergence of material input structures was prevalent in the 1970s, while divergence dominated in the 1980s.
Temporal variations in the atmospheric pressure curve in the Bydgoszcz area
Atmospheric pressure, the meteorological parameter describing pressure conditions in an area, was analysed based on daily values. The mean atmospheric pressure in the Bydgoszcz area in the examined multi-annual period from 1971 to 2010 was 1006.4 hPa. Comparison of the mean value of atmospheric pressure calculated for the periods from 1971 to 1990 and from 1991 to 2010 revealed bi-directional differences between them. The atmospheric pressure curve featured high yearto-year variability in the examined 40-year period. In Bydgoszcz, there was a statistically insignificant downward trend in mean annual atmospheric pressure (0.2 hPa/10 years) from 1971 to 2010
