Analysis of data from spacecraft (stratospheric warmings)

Investigations involved a search through existing literature and data to obtain case histories for the six or more stratospheric warmings that occurred in April - May 1969, June - July 1969, August 1969, December 1969 - January 1970, December 1970 - January 1971, and January 1973 - February 1973. For each of these warmings the following steps have been taken in preparation for analysis: (1) defining the nature of the problem; (2) literature search of stratwarmings and solar-terrestrial phenomens; and (3) file of data sources, especially stratospheric temperatures (radiances) and geophysical indices

Migrations of yellowfin tuna tagged off the southern coast of Mexico in 1960 and 1969

ENGLISH: The map method, the Jones method, the variance-covariance method, and the Skellam method were used to study the migrations of tagged yellowfin tuna released off the southern coast of Mexico in 1960 and 1969. The first three methods are all useful, and each presents information which is complementary to that presented by the others. The Skellam method, as used in this report, is less useful. The movements of the tagged fish released in 1960 appeared to have been strongly directed, but this was probably caused principally by the distribution of the fishing effort. The effort was much more widely distributed in 1970, and the movements of the fish released in 1969 appeared to have been much less directed. The correlation coefficients derived from the variance-covariance method showed that it was not random, however. The small fish released in the Acapulco and 10°N-100°W areas in 1969 migrated to the Manzanillo area near the beginning of February 1970. The medium and large fish released in the same areas in the same year tended to migrate to the southeast throughout the first half of 1970, however. Modulation of cosmic-ray protons and helium nuclei near solar maximum

Balloon observations of proton and helium spectra in 1970, 1971 and 1972, reveal a factor of approximately 1.85 deviation from a single valued regression at low rigidities. This deviation decreases with increasing rigidity for both species. The period 1969-1970 is unique because time variations at low and high energies were anti-correlated. When satellite observations are used to extend the balloon observations to energies below 100 MeV/Nucleon, the proton spectrum showed a steeper slope in 1970 and 1972 than the characteristic J = AT spectrum observed during 1965-1969. The slope of the helium spectrum became continuously flatter during the same period (1970-1972). Computer generated spectra based on simple two parameter modulation models describe the basic features of the observations if one of the variable parameters is used to characterize the rigidity dependence of the diffusion coefficient. Models which do not allow such a variation are not consistent with the observations

A study of the relationship between religious belief patterns and measures of social activism

The radical changes in American theology, in religious attitudes and mode of religious expression, and in the nature of the relationship between religious commitment and particular social issues have shaped the present decade in such a way that the thrust of religious belief is being seriously questioned. Among sociologists involved in the study of religion this is a pervading topic (Berger, 1970; Bouma, 1970; Demarath, 1969; Glock, et al. 1967; Hadden, 1969; Stark & Glock, 1970; Tinger, 1969)

Maintenance and operation of the multispectral data collection and reproduction facilities of the Willow Run Laboratories

The accomplishments in multispectral mapping during 1970 and (fiscal year) 1971 are presented. The mapping was done with the instrumented C-47 aircraft owned and operated by Willow Run Laboratories of The University of Michigan. Specific information for flight operations sponsored by NASA/MSC (Manned Spacecraft Center) in 1970 and fiscal year 1971 is presented, and a total listing of flights for 1968, 1969, 1970, and fiscal year 1971 is included in the appendices. The data-collection and reproduction facilities are described

A multidisciplinary study of the scyphozoan jellyfishes of lower Chesapeake Bay, 1 July 1969 - 31 March 1970

This report covers the activities.through the end of the project agreement period that terminated 30 April 1970. The last annual report submitted covered the period l July 1968 - 30 June 1969. A detailed semi-annual report that covered the period l July 1969 - 31 December 1969 was submitted in early February 1970. Therefore, only the last four months of the project period have not been covered by previous reports. The information presented here is based on jellyfish research conducted at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science , during· the interval ·between l January 1970 and.31 March 1970.
