Industrial Research at the Eastern Telegraph Company, 1872-1929
Copyright © British Society for the History of Science 2013By the late nineteenth century the submarine telegraph cable industry,
which had blossomed in the 1850s, had reached what historians regard as technological
maturity. For a host of commercial, cultural and technical reasons, the industry seems to
have become conservative in its attitude towards technological development, which is
reflected in the small scale of its staff and facilities for research and development. This
paper argues that the attitude of the cable industry towards research and development was
less conservative and altogether more complex than historians have suggested. Focusing
on the crucial case of the Eastern Telegraph Company, the largest single operator of
submarine cables, it shows how the company encouraged inventive activity among
outside and in-house electricians and, in 1903, established a small research laboratory
where staff and outside scientific advisors pursued new methods of cable signalling and
cable designs. The scale of research and development at the Eastern Telegraph
Company, however, was small by comparison to that of its nearest competitor, Western
Union, and dwarfed by that of large electrical manufacturers. This paper explores the
reasons for this comparatively weak provision but also suggests that this was not
inappropriate for a service-sector firm
Ballets Suédois (1920–25)
Rolf de Maré’s Ballets Suédois was active from 1920 to 1925. It was the chief artistic rival to Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, and de Maré was often referred to as the Swedish Serge Diaghilev. With Jean Börlin as chief choreographer, the company created twenty-four ballets in collaboration with prominent modern artists and composers, including Fernand Léger, Giorgio de Chirico, Pablo Picasso, Francis Picabia, Erik Satie, Darius Milhaud, and Cole Porter. When first launched, the troupe performed ballets in a style similar to the Ballets Russes, but de Maré’s interest in the visual arts and the vibrancy of modern, contemporary life resulted in a greater emphasis on abstraction and popular idioms in both the design and choreography of Ballets Suédois productions
Egas Moniz: 90 years (1927-2017) from cerebral angiography
In June 2017 we celebrate the 90th anniversary of the pioneer discovery of cerebral angiography, the seminal imaging technique used for visualizing cerebral blood vessels and vascular alterations as well as other intracranial disorders. Egas Moniz (1874-1955) was the first to describe the use of this revolutionary technique which, until 1975 (when computed tomography, CT, scan was introduced in the clinical practice), was the sole diagnostic tool to provide an imaging of cerebral vessels and therefore alterations due to intracranial pathology. Moniz introduced in the clinical practice this fundamental and important diagnostic tool. The present contribution wishes to pay a tribute to the Portuguese neurosurgeon, who was also a distinguished neurologist and statesman. Despite his tremendous contribution in modern brain imaging, Egas Moniz was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1949 for prefrontal leucotomy, the neurosurgical intervention nowadays unacceptable, but should rather be remembered for his key contribution to modern brain imaging.

Almada Negreiros, a dança e os Ballets Russes
The Ballets Russes (1909-1929) have represented a special moment of western modern art. Because of the World War I, the famous company directed by Serge Diaghilev (1872-1929) launched several tournées in the Iberian Peninsula and Lisbon was one of the group’s destinies. Its arrival and stay in the Portuguese capital caused the enthusiasm of young modern artists among whom the futurist artist José de Almada Negreiros (1893-1970), collaborator of the review Orpheu, who wrote at that occasion a "Ballets Russes Manifesto". This is probably the first and only manifesto of the 20th century concerning the Ballets Russes. The present essay analyses the various aspects involved on the writing of the Manifesto, in particular the aesthetic dimensions of Futurism in Portugal as well as the art of dance in relation with other writings by Almada Negreiros.
